Hi, I'm 48 and gone most of my life without singing in public and until about 3 months ago had never done karaoke before. I've been a drummer since Jr' Highscool days though, so I've at leat been around music some. Along the way I've just played and never sang. I can appreciate anyone who plays an instrubment and sings at the same time. I've tried and find it very hard, I'm always concentrating on one and screwing up on the other. :D
But I've decided to give it a concerted effort and try doing Karaoke and play my drums along with it. Having tried Karaoke for the first time not that long ago, I picked some I knew well enough to sing without even looking at words or hearing music, but when I got up and gave it a shot, I was suprised at how different I sounded through the PA than I did in the car to and from work (or anywhere else I could bellow out in private). So I learned real quick that I wasn't going to get far tying to sing in my band unless I could out a way to practice both till I get it right.
This led me to my current setup. Since I play electronic drums, I already had a great PA for my drums (Mackie CFX-12 mixer, SRM-450 speaker and SA-1501 sub). So I decided to get a CDG player and add it to my rack, and purchase some CDG's to give me something to practice on. I ended up with a VocoPro DVX-780K player (I've read most don't think too much of that brand in here, but it seems like a nice, versatile machine for my first attempt. I wanted something I could rack mount first, and secondly something that will be versatile as I don't where this is all gonna lead me yet! To give me a variety to work with, I purschased the Chartbuster POP 500 package giving me the top songs from 1950-1985 in yearly increments. My band plays mostly oldies and classic rock, so this is a good package for my needs. To add more variety, I also picked up a Sweet Georgia Brown 66 disk set to give me a wide varety for the whole family and friends on a budjet. I have a feeling that in the end I'll be diving into the Soundchoice stuff if things work out such that I want better quality stuff, but they're a bit pricey when I'm still trying to figure out what I'm doing.
I don't really plan on heading down the KJ route, but If I get enough of a collection, and/or my situation changes, who knows what the future hold ya know!
Well, I've been long-winded enough, but that gives you a quick rundown of what brings me to this forum. Looks like a lot of good people in here!

Welcome to the world of karaoke. You are in the right place here.
Since you are on digital drum and want to sing and play drum at the same time, have you try doing karaoke using MIDI files? There are tons of them in the Net and the advantage is you can mute the drum and they are mostly free. Many have lyrics incoperate in them. The quality are not so good tho'
