I hosted a show at a new venue this past Friday. I'll be doing a once a month show there (filling in for another KJ) anyway..This place is largest bar I had the opportunity to host at. There was a stage and half the bar had at least 20 feet celings and the other half normal 10ft.

This is were the problem starts. The sound by the stage was LOUD ,but by the time you got to the far end of the bar it seemed the celings just sucked the life out of the sound. I had 2 -15" speakers (Yamaha SV115) set up on the stage and was pushing 280watts per speaker at 8ohms.

What is the the best to get more sound to the far end of the bar --MORE POWER - MORE SPEAKERS - ADD A SUB ?

I'm afraid more power will just make it too loud by the stage area. I'm leaning towards 2 more speakers set up halfway ? Any suggestions ?

There are many thing and solutions. For Big Shows I run 700 watts per side QSC PLX3402 on TurboSound TXD 151's with 2 mackie SWA1501's Mid Room 2 Mackie SRM450's I run the mid room speakers wireless. Suggestions: Upgrade your main speakers and move your lower wattage speakers for mid room speakers. At least 500 watts per side. Subs do make a huge difference. With a crossover you can cut the low frequencies to your main speakers making them more efficent, and carry better.

I would add a couple more speakers (this will increase overall volume in back a couple decibels) & your current amp SHOULD be able to hold the extra load. The Yamahas are 8 ohms, so doubling your speakers will drop to 4 ohm (per channel). I would also add a sub or 2 just to round out the sound overall and relieving some of the low end stress on the full range amp.

Unless you have a long term contract or you are receiving a considerable fee I would try and go with what you have or rent equipment. This seems to require a decent investment for a gig that is only once a week plus the additional setup time and equipment you would have to haul. I currently run a show at a large bar that is very long. I use 2 JBL eon G2's and now I'm adding a sub. I try and keep it at a reasonable level.

Here are some things I learned installing many many jukeboxes and designing the sound systems in all kinds of venues. The ultimate goal is to distribute the sound so as one walks from one end to the other the volume is constant throughout and adjacent speakers work with each other and actually give a stereo effect In a narrow long room the stereo can be used, one on each side. Make sure that all the speakers in each leg is in phase by observing the polarity marks or a quick test can be done by facing the speakers towards each other about 2 feet apart. If they are out of phase the bass will cancel out, in phase bass vibtrations are more evident...The distance between speakers along the walls isnt real critical but can be determined by trial and error.. Often times a speaker in each corner can be used esp in a squarer room.. The speakers are usually hung just below the ceiling and aimed down unless the ceilings are abnormally high (cathederal). The "fill" speakers dont have to have the same wattage as the mains or even the quality can be a little less. I like to use eon g2's for the mains and fill with the older eons. Remember that bass is heard by ur bones, vibrations in the floor. That is why the bass bins need to be on the floor. Bass is dampened by the following, distance, thick carpets, soft furniture, bass traps. lotsa bodies (as the crowd thickens, trim the bass accordingly), and many other things. You actually want more bass on the dance floor and if it is a good hard wood floor it conducts the vibrations fairly well. So a bass or 2 on the dance floor should suffice.. Usually in a large venue they want a section that is not as loud as the dance floor, we used to install L-pads to do this but just adjusting speaker angles will solve this.

Adding (2) more speakers is not a problem as I have a good set of Peavey Sp5g's in fact I probably should have used these first. The problem I see with this venue in adding speakers mid room is there are 5 or 6 dart boards going down one side and a few sitting booths down the other and then you are in the main bar area which has little or no room. I might be able to put 2 speakers on the floor a little wide of the stage on each side to "dispense" the sound a little bit more. Eventually I will get a sub to use but right now $$$ not going to happen. Currently running a Peavy PV1200 as my main amp and I know I could use a little more oomph - I have been looking into the Behringer EP2500 amp which pushes a little bit more power. This "gig" is only once a month and despite the drawbacks I was complimented by the owner for a great sound and job. (only I know the difference). This month I'll try the 4 speaker set up and see how it sounds. --- Is it best to keep the same speakers on the same side ??? 2 yamahas one side 2 peaveys other?? or 1 and 1 ?
