Post subject: | Not Starting Off The New Year Very Good Please Help!!! |
Ok its bean a while since Ive been back on here but I trust all your advice and I now this is the best place for advise so here we go. I run my shows off a pc based system. Its driving me crazy on what I can do to improve volume. It seams like most jobs I do I end up with the master, gain, and channel volume all the way up. My first job of this year and I either have a bad wire, or my sound card is acting up, or I might be clipping my mixer( high end crackles even with volume and highs turned down). Not sure which yet still have to do some testing. I have two jbl powered 15"eon's and 2 peavey 18" subs driven by a peavey 1500 watt amp. I ,personally, have a problem sending a audio signal through a 1/8" connection out of my computer to rca to my mixer. Is there a better way or better sound card to improve volume and possibly sound quality. I feel like I have no overhead for volume. When I turn up the cpu volume it just sounds more distorted. I have customers asking for the volume to be turned up and I cant. I mostly perform at wedding receptions so the buildings are small. I easily have enough power and speakers for the jobs but I lose it either through the cpu or the mixer or sound card. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. |

Need some more info What software sound card, mixer and procs if any describe your total system. Are the jbl's g2? What is the size of the venue? Layout? |

usb soundblaster mp3+ ... $45 at Office Depot. It's what I was using before going to the numark mixer, which has usb connections. |

You are overdue for the correct soundcard...and you are clipping your mixer. Go get the M-Audio Delta 44....It's about 149, but it will solve your problems instantly. It is designed to interface PC to pro level mixers, unlike soundblaster and all the other consumer lever cards. It will allow you to patch 1/4' TRS fully balanced cables straight into your mixer. You gain 6dB right there...It also has a patchbay/router/hardware interface that allows you to change in/out levels -10 to +4dB. Then make sure your software player is set up correctly...Set the volume level on the software player to 2/3rd and no higher, and O out the EQ. Then set your board masters to 0/unity....Then increase your player channel strip to -6dB....Finally increase the channel input gain twisty til it is as loud as you plan to play that night....This give you perfect gain structure from the PC/player thru the board....You will not clip this way and you have max head room....If you need more volume, then you increase the input channel gain, but never increase masters above unity, and never increase PC/player slider above master sliders. For your mic strips, set input twisty to where the strip input led blinks only when you sing very loudly, increase slider to get proper mix with player strip. From there, leave strip sliders alone and control loudness with masters unless you get a soft/loud singer, then use mic sliders also. I got this info directly from Marty at Peavey...He is there guru on live sound and gain structure....And he is most correct on this. PS, make sure your amp input knobs are at max. While I am on the subject, Everyone here who patches a CD+G player into a pro level mixer needs to try something:.....Place your masters at unity, reduce your player input twisty to zero, then increase the player slider to -6dB, then increase the input twisty to get proper loudness....I bet you don't have to increase input twisty very much if, at all....This will show you just how hot your player outputs are...they can overdrive your mixer very quickly.... I can stroll by a board and with just a glance tell if the kj/dj has a clue about gain structure.....His masters need to be at or near unity, and his strip sliders should be well above the bottom, but not as high as the masters with no clip lights flickering anywhere..... |

Kieth i got a question for ya on the output, though. i have my system (player into sound board, out to EQ, out to amp, out to delta66, into computer. also have headphones out from delta66. mics are directly into sound board) the problem is i'm getting the signal from the player twice through the phones. once and then again about 1/2 second delay. it's not an echo, it's a second signal. only happens when i'm recording the original instrumental backing, though. when i'm playing the instrumental backing from the somputer, i don't get the second signal. any ideas as to why? i figger it has to be something to do with the way i'm routed. |

Its called latency. Without knowing what you are recording with I cant give a direct answer but you need to turn off the recorder monitor. Here are some basic steps in setting up a DAW for recording. Download the latest delta drivers and in your software setup choose ASIO for the audio drivers. Go here and do the tweaks pertaining to your situation. Also download this and disable all functions not needed ..A 1/2 second delay sounds like a cache problem In the delta control panel experiment with the cache setting. A DAW should have 500mb to a gig of ram especially if you are multitracking |

thanks karyoker. the drivers are the newest available, but the manual says to use the recorder monitor. i'll play with it a bit the way you've suggested and see what happens. thanks again for the help! |

I suggest all here with tech questions involving computer based playback call Sweetwater Sound........ Those "salesmen" there are not just salesmen. They each are deeply into music and music gear....Sweetwater is unlike any other retailer/etailer....They started out as a high end recording studio (still are), and eventually got into selling equipment....All of their sales staff are very experienced, and each of them have a background of some type in music....Some have their own recording studios at home, some play in bands and write music....All are totally involved in the craft....Call them and ask to speak to a guy who is already into what you have questions about. A typical conversation with Sweetwater sales goes like this, "Hey, let me connect you to XXXX, he is into that, He can best help you....Then, XXXX will get on the line and relate his experience with the various items they offer that will fit your requirements...And yeah, they will also negotiate prices. I just bought my ART Pro Channel from them.....The guy I talked to used it at home...He was very honest with me about what to expect and promised to help me once I had it racked up... He even offered to take it back if I wasn't happy with it. I know the mods here don't want us promoting retailers, but gosh darned it, I can't say enuff good stuff about these guys. |

Thats why I like JBL and Mackie.. Their tech service is second to none Schematics and tech manuals and parts are readily availible. Over 40 years I have been on both ends of calling tech support and giving it... Sony JVC and Sharp took over the industry fron RCA and others because RCA tech support went to hell. We put in a new RCA tv transmitter in Scottsbluff. Half of the interconnect cables were missing it took 3 weeks to get all the parts Later they put a new JVC transmitter in Cheyenne Two weeks before shipping 2 engineers showed up from Japan to prepare for installation.. On initial startup the power out was within 5% of specs... 100kw... So when Lon and Matt and others on here recommend a brand it is from the overall experience of reliability and customer service.... |

Dell (2350) Yea it should if you have a video board in a pci slot, arrange it so the 1010 will go into a lower numbered slot That gives the audio a higher irq priority than the video.... |

Karyoker, In my Dell Dimension 2350 system, a few of the features were an integrated chip ??? (as I recall)..Not sure what's a card, and what's a chip...Haven't had the cover off this system yet...(I'm not ready to fry another system) I have the manual right here, and will read up to see what's what... Dell (2350) Not knowing your particular computer, it would be best to ask that question at M-audio.com |

I have the manual right here, and will read up to see what's what... Thanks ! The problem with most Dells and other factory built machines is they tend to integrate sound and video on the motherboard and then not offer many PCI slots for expansion....You need extra open PCI slots to upgrade to a dual display video card and a beefed up sound card....Go to dell site with your service tag number(or post it here for me) and read up on your exact configuration. Your service tag number will pull up your computer as shipped. Now you know why I chose to build my music computer...I not only saved lots of money, but i also selected a motherboard that could support almost unlimited expansion both for extra cards and ram. |

Dell Specs It has three pci slots.. It does have onboard audio (which you will disable anyway) and onboard intel video.. With a dual head pci video board you will actually wind up with three displays.. |

Yeah, but does he have PCI modem or wireless card inserted?...I doubt he has used any open slots if he never had the cover off, so he is probably good to go. Steven, go to Dell and use your service tag # to pull up your specs, then cut n paste them here so we can see what we are dealing with. We can build you a workable DAW that way perhaps.....It ain't like you got anything better to do.....This is Friday for me and the second ex wife ain't going to visit till tomorrow night, so I got plenty of time too. |
