Neighbor gave me a 83 Ford F-100 pick-up. He had installed new battery backwards and managed to release the magic smoke that made truck work. Ok, I got it running.......just required new ignition module as old one was actually melted, and a new fusable link near starter solenoid was blown from backwwards battery. Now I got no gages...they don't wiggle or indicate....maybe magic smoke escaped something under dash that effects gages?.....All fuses are good, BTW. Oh, also discovered why he ran old battery down attempting to start it...the fuel pump was bad....Duh. So, so far, I've 40 bucks invested in nice running truck, but would like suggestions on how to fix gages.....any ideas. |

My cuz is visiting from Reno...He just retired and blew his engine in his old Chevy, so he flew down to visit...I had this truck just sitting there and two days off to tinker with it....So I gave it to him if he n me could get it running.....Looks like he has a decent ride back to Reno! ![]() |

More than likely the wiring circuit on the back of the gauge assembly is fried. You can probably find a new one at a wrecking yard and replace it for very little money. That might cause it to work again. Ford is notorious for having problems with the wiring circuit on the back of the gage assembly.--Mike |

Thanks.....I'll pop out the gage cluster once we get it up in the shop and out of the pasture...It's too danged hot out there and too danged far out for me to be out there doing the delicate stuff....I want it in my shop where I have reach of everything. If the rest of the truck checks out ok we will bother with the finer details, if not I'll stick a fersale sign on it and just give him what it brings. |

Chuck2 @ Thu Oct 05, 2006 12:46 pm wrote: I'm a closet mechanic. Well, we just replaced the fuel pump and now at least have gas up to the carb, but not in the bowl.....so I sent cuz for a carb kit cause the bowl float valve is crusted over and the accel pump is dry rotted......it's a top-loaded motorcraft carb so it's simple to troubleshoot.........Hmmmmm....sucker runs good as long as you trickle gas down the carb, so I guess we will continue to tinker.

You knew you were gonna hear from the Twidgit on this one ![]() Look for a blown diode. If the power was reversed, and high enough, it could do that... |

Keith one time I was home on leave and my younger sister had her boy friend out We were all sitting at the kitchen table out at the farm and he said my car sputters when you push on the gas... So my older sister said wall u need to get a carberator kit and replace the leather on the accelerator pump cuz its probably dry and worn out. He looked at her and said wats a carberator? He didnt pass the test.... ![]() |
