Post subject: | Just Want to Brag - System |
I've been working exclusively at one bar for over a year. Now since I get to keep my heavy stuff there, I've turned down many side gigs. But the bar is closed for renovations for about 3 weeks, and all my equipment is home with me. Well, I got asked to do a outdoor benefit this weekend. Last minute thing, one days notice. I decided to give it a try. I mentally relate this experience to have a sportscar that you drive around town, and finally get a chance to let it see what it can do on the interstate. The benefit is being held at a LARGE area of land, with many activities set up all over the place. I set up my system, and just check the sound for the area with the tables in it. Later as things are rolling along, my husband comes up and tells me he can here it all the way over to the other end, and it's sounding crystal clear. I couldn't help but feel ' he** yeah!" I was seriously nervous doing an outside gig, because I was scared I just couldn't get the sound quality worth a crap. Other than freezing my rear off, and being on a trailer bed, that a band was having to set up on while my show is going on, and dealing with kids, and people who have no clue how to handle your mics, even with repeated instructions...all in all wasn't to bad. At least my system and ability to get great sound mix was killer!! Thanks for listening, just had to brag. My system: Player: JVC MV33Bk Mixer: Mackie DFX 12 Amp: QSC RMX 1450 Speakers: 2 Yamaha S115V and a Kustom KPC10M floor monitor Mics: 2 Audio-Technica MB1K & Shure wireless headset (other mics were available, but not needed, including a shure, but for non experienced singers, the Audio-Thechnica serve me well) |

Good job. Thanks for sharing. Most of the time all we hear about are the nightmares of shows, glad everything went well. James |

I hate outdoor gigs, around here it can be sunny one minute, and the next minute it's pouring.......rain falls sideways often around here. Bugs swarming around your light, getting inside your equiptment, and dying in there......dust and sand blowing on your stuff also. Music carries very well outside, and you don't have bottled up conversation to overcome.... net result for me, less power needed.....less chance of feedback too.......not worth ruining your stuff to me, though....... ![]() |

Yeah, I forgot that the first hour & a half the wind was blowing something fierce-chasing request slips wasn't fun. No matter what I put on them, everything went flying. I was also amazed that I didn't even have my system volume half way, nor my amp all the way. So it could still get louder. I perfer warm weather, but not having bugs or rain is definately a plus. But I did discover why you should charge more for a private gig than a bar gig! maninblack - Thanks  |

Very nice !! You can brag all you'd like sweetie. If you ever have to do an outside gig again try Staples, they have these cool magnetic boards that work awesome for me. They are thin strips I'm guessing the demensions to be 3" x 12". They come with magnets that look like tacks. I can get 30 to 40 request slips on 2 strips. :dancin: |

![]() I would never risk electrics outside unless there is cover. We have done more than one gig in farmers shearing sheds and implement sheds which is fine but the dust is killer so we kept our 7 yr old peavy mixer amp and passive speakers specially for that sort of thing no need to dismantle powered speakers and vacuum them out then Might as well have a chest inflation myself...gig on sat night toward the end of the night I had a request for Metallica Nothing Else Matters...at the end I hear someone say "she can sing anything" nice to hear but not true...cant sing abba or shania to save myself |

Babs - Thanks  Morgan - Nothing like belting something out that wows 'em! ![]() Bigdog- Yeah, the risks of an outside gig are way too great. And weather could change at a moments notice. I definately kept my eye on the weather reports, upt till it was time to leave. And I think several of us would be interested in your equipment list. ![]() |

![]() What, moreso than you already do while misinforming people on how to run sound while all in the same while not able to prove or at the very least back up your claims with any kind of proveable facts? Not really much to brag about, you've listed your system in various posts, doing a quick forum search on your equipment, it's a really basic set-up. You stated you use a Mackie or Peavey 16 channel board (better than most karaoke boards) Some effects, probably Alesis Microverb (eh) Some compressor you didn't disclose, probably Alesis 3630. (eh) Some dual 32 band eq you didn't disclose, probably Alesis MEQ230. (eh) 1 Crown XL900 power amp, underpowering 2 Yamaha S118 subs, with no crossover & 2 Yamaha S115 tops. (great amp, great speakers, being as they are being run wrong, put them in an eh league, probably sound better to you over your competetion because you have stated COUNTLESS times that YOUR direct competitions' sound is THE WORST so even a cheesy Nady system would sound better than them, so you aren't really making a point for yourself, of course your stuff would sound better than a piece of crap ![]() A Shure $600 wireless mic system (same diaphragm as the standard $100 SM58 - so no improvement on ACTUAL sound quality, just the transmitter/receiver). Great, the rest of the system does nothing really to make that $600 mic sound it's best. 2 other cordless, can't find the actual brand you listed. 2 players...no big deal, most here have systems similar for their back ups. ![]() |

Yep, just thousands of dollars worth of crap. Still way more than most. ![]() And at least it's a whole system. :O Not a 2 speaker half system.  |

Gahmc, Nice system and it is good once and awhile to set up in a different venue and "open it up" a little. Outside gigs are awesome to do on occasion --weather permitting as mentioned - I purchased recently one of these pop up canopys 10ft x 10ft and its a MUST HAVE if you do outside gigs --Not just because of the RAIN but the SUN is more to worry about !!! |

NO, I SAID, that it would probably sound better to YOU than the crap systems that you are always referring to in your area. You have decent equipment, but absolutely NO KNOWLEDGE on how to run it. But YES I can believe that even set up wrong, it sounds better than the WalMart syystems you refer to as your competition. Well really it ISN'T a WHOLE system as it's missing a crossover & amp for the sub to make it truly complete. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() Money talks, B.S. plays with half a system. ![]() ![]() Your income doesn't speak anything! You can't prove where you are or are afraid to. LOL, everyone else got it, you are afraid of someone with a REAL system that knows how to run it coming to your town. Got to be the only reason. YOu keep saying you buy the best, but none of what you have is the best, your mics (at the least the receiver part) & mixer may be better than most. You claim to make $175 per night recently, no wonder, you can do it with a system that isn't hooked up right, just think what someone could do that wanted to add the crossover, amp & actually eq for each room. BigDog would be tucking his tail between his legs as the humility sets in... ![]() OH BTW, if someone can make as much as you with only "half a system", then who's stupid for dumping all that cash into a good system. |

...or getting new mudders, and finally getting to take your truck off road to see how hard it is to get stuck. I can relate to that:) Cool that you got to try your system in a new/different setup, awesome that it worked well for ya. As James said, usually we hear the horror stories. (except, of course, from BigDog) LOL I would be scared to use mine outdoors I think. (my new system) I did get asked to do a barn party once a couple years ago for Halloween... it was tons of fun, but my gosh, I didn't think I'd EVER get all the dust out of my speakers. It was horrible. (lesson learned) . |

Yamaha? Don't they make motorcycles, bikes, trumpets, trombones, and a gazillion other products. Yep cheap Japanese stuff. Give me a great Canadian Yorkville system any day of the week. Compressors? Processors? Who needs them? A good board and effects package is all you need with excellent speakers and subs. Oh, and just one more little thing, someone who knows sound and how to run a board. A good sound person can get a good sound out of almost anything. A crappy sound person can make a $10,000 system sound like a Wal-Mart special. BD why don't you get a big person system and lessons on how to use it. |

It's only karaoke, it's good enough...... ![]() This is the attitude that seems to rule this site. ![]() Yorkville....overkill. ![]() ![]() You should have bought crap like me and you would have had the money to get a baffling set of colored flashing lights. ![]() I don't need lights. We do raw karaoke here. It's all manly. No foo foo colored lights for us. Just nonstop, continuous, totally karaoke music. No dance/filler added. It's all natural. NO B.S. needed to make it grow. |

Jamkaraoke- Thanks, and good tip about the canopy- I could use it for other things too :D BlueStained - Thanks for the understanding. And yeah, I asked the guy who was hosting the benefit a zillion questions about where he wanted me to set up. And the fact that it was on a trailer bed, made me feel better about having it outside-off the ground, so no ground moisture, dust, careless dancers or singers :D . I let the monitor on a stand and the singers stay on the ground :D . timberlea - Yeah Yamaha, and they ROCK!! ![]() And, I'm not certain if the comment about a compressor was directed at me or bigdog, but I do have one, but as I'm still learning it, I ended up taking the mics off of the channels that I have it hooked to, because I wasn't getting the mic volume I wanted. No shame in my game, I like to learn the equipment I have before adding new pieces, and the compressor is a new piece, and I am learning, but I won't ruin a whole night while gaining knowledge. :D |
