I was talking with one of the KJ's that works at our local watering hole.  I asked him what the owner was paying these days.  This is a house system...He said that on a week night if the bar does more than 1000.00 in sales he doubles the pay and if the bar does more than 2000.00 on a weekend he doubles the pay...

I found this to be very interesting...Have any of you ever heard of such a thing??  I can definately see how it would motivate a KJ on a house system to still try and get people to his show....

I thought Bob was too much of a tightwad to do that! (I am assuming I know which watering hole you are referring to.)

I think that is a very good incentive, but it would be nice if the bar owner backed that up with doing additional marketing to get in more people; otherwise the main incentive for the KJ is to get the same people to drink more.

Pool and dart players drink, too, or so I am told.  :O

One of my competiors has been trying to get the gig where I do Thrs & Fri nites every week.  So this past 4th of july he made a deal with the bar owner to do Sat nite, for $50 + bonus based on the take of the till from 9pm to close.  He made $75 that nite, and I still have my regular thrs/fri gig.

I think it is a good idea as a bonus, espically if a kj/dj is working on the house system.  But basing your entire pay on the take of the till, could hurt.

I have also had venue owners contact me and want me to do karoke for cover charge.  NO WAY.

For me, if I am there, ya know what I do, and ya have to pay me for it, wether there are 2 or 200 people there.

Wow that's interesting. That sounds more like a bonus. I just wouldn't want to take a cut in pay if the bar did lousy.

I learned a long time ago never to take a just a percentage without a base amount of pay first. I made $6 doing a band gig one time that way.  LMAO

Yeah, expensive lessons stay the longest.....

I was contacted by a bar in a high trafic area of downtown. They wanted karaoke, but were known for live bands. He gave me a Sunday night, and gave me 30% of the take for the night. The first few nights, it was great. Then football season hit. Then he started changing the way he counted the drawer for the night- like having 2 bartenders for the first couple hours, but only counting one drawer towards me. Needless to say I wasn't there long. But I certainly learned a lesson of working on percentages....

it sounds good in theory, but i'd rather have the say on how much i make.  meaning, i have, on a slow night, told the owner "just take care of my tab and we'll call it even."  of course i usually run a pretty heafty tab because i buy alot of drinks for other folks, as well as mine and my wife's.  now i WON'T offer a deal like this if i have already warned the owner to expect a slow night due to competing forces such as a home football game or other such thing.  it's funny, but i can usually set my calendar by what's going on around our little 'burg.  home game=no one in the bar until at least 10:30.  UT home night game=no business at all!  UT night game away win=big crowd as soon as the game is well in hand.  UT night game away loss= no crowd.  UT day game win or loss= good crowd.  spring time change= lighter crowds for about 3 weeks, the they start coming in earlier until school is out.  fall time change=light crowd the weekend of the change then later crowds for the next couple of weeks.  anyone else notice these changes?    actually that gives me an idea for another topic......stay tuned to this forum!

I work on a base salary of $200. I get a bonus of $25 for 1500 sales and another $25 for 2000 or more and that's it. No cut for slow nights.

Not a bad deal at all.. This place pays $70 per night. If they do 1500.. on a weekday they double the pay and then if it goes over 2000.00 on a weekend they double it then too.  Keep in mind it is a house system, all the guy has to do is walk in....

That's not bad seeing there's no transport, lifting, setting up or tearing down. Gotta get me a roadie 1 day starting to feel like everythings getting heavier especially in winter Yuck.

We do a Tuesday night for 20% of the bar and sometimes it's the highest paying gig we have.  Took a bit to build it up but well worth it.

Whichever KJ that is he really needs to consider getting and ad here. It's only $25 per annum. Maybe you could recommend it to him.

I know people who travel that look here to see if there is karaoke in the city they are going to.
