Post subject:  CDG Players

Hello everyone,

I have a nice / expensive CDG player and setup, but lately it doesn't like to play some disks and in most cases won't play disks that people have recorded - Niether of these have been problems in the past.

In looking at the player it has a little digital display that shows you what track is playing and it counts of the time in seconds and minutes while the track plays.

For the problem disks that won't play, you can see some of the syptoms on this display.

Normally when you put in a disk ad close the shuttle, the display is falshing until it scans the disk and registers the display and player at the start of track one. The tack indicator which was two flashing lines becomes 01 for track one and the time indicator that was 4 flashing lines resets to 00.00.

During the bad disk niether of these settle like the player cannot locate the disk info and orient it's self to track one.

Anybody have any ideas - Is this laser head adjustments stuff or some other thing? Can this type of player be serviced and by whom? Is tghis just basicall CR-ROM stuff and normal CD repair guys can work on it?

FYI - A demagnitizing disk help a bit and continues to help on some, but I really think there is a larger problem and this is becoming less effective and never was a 100% cure.

Thxs. :?

Sounds like a laser could be misaligned, or the drive motor is going bad. Or it just may need a good cleaning.

Well they aren't very reliable machines for 1. I know a company that used their "top of the line" model, cost him over $600 & it started experiencing the same symptoms as you describe. Couldn't get any customer support from the company - or very little. He eventually sold it for a loss & bought 2 JVC SV22 single tray players.
I used some of their stuff when I first started out in early 90's & quickly learned a costly lesson. I gave the player to my 2 year old to play with although it wasn't as sturdy as Ficsher Price ;c)

Nice & Expensive doesn't always mean "better".

exactly!!

Vocopro sells themselves as being a "top of the line"... but what they don't tell you is they have a horrid reputation amongst people who've done any serious karaoke work.

Here's an option. Take your karaoke discs that are giving you trouble, and take them to a store that sells dvd that can READ cdg and cdr...
(we have an outfit called "Fry's Electronics" up here in the Great NorthWest.

Ask for a demonstration of the unit... and hand them your original and your copies.... and you'll see if they are the disc or not.

They make a great DJ platform... but ugh!!!!

Thxs everyone - I like the Fry's idea................

Well I go ton the VocoPro website and emailed their Tech Link.........Twice now with aboslutely no reponse.........shame on them.

My wife was just going to buy another $500 player from them to replace her's, but after this forum and prompting from me they loose our business.

We are from Portland and took the player into a little sterio shop out in Sellwood and handd the guy a set of disks that would play........He looked at it, cleaned it up and whamo - looks like we are back in business for $60 USD.

Whne the thing goes completley south - We'll look at the JVC's and other options.

The only real requirments is that we still fit in her "concert boxe" so all of the gear remains soemwhat protected and easier to handle....

Their are universal shelves so you CAN rack the unrackable safely.

I'd say shop the market for a different make. Personally, I think JVC or RSQ are a couple of the best value for the dollar available. There are better brands available, but when you compare value vs. dollar, those 2 have my vote.

JVC and RSQ have the same electronics. The differance is that the RSQ has a plastic lense to read the laser, and the JVC has a glass lense.
Since your problem is disks that are difficult to read, I would suggest JVC.
