Post subject:  Spam Posts

I've only been frequenting the site regularly for a couple of days.... and I notice this site gets TONS of one post wonders spamming it.

I may be new here, but I've been a member of my car forum for 4 years now with a LOT more posting traffic than here (sad considering its a rare car forum, and karaoke is uber international) and we don't have ANY problem with spamming.  I can ask how they avoid it over there, but one thing I do know that they have started recently is a intro form that must be filled out in order for them to even be able to post.

At least!  We all have other things going as well & can't be on 24/7.  We do try to get them off as fast as we notice!

Here's the thread where I posted asking for suggestions:

Just like I thought, mandatory intro post takes care of most of it.

Phil have you upgraded to 2.30? I have been thinking about it but dread it in ways. I'm wondering if it has more anti spam tools.

On my little forum about all the joiners I get is spammers. LMAO My email addy ban list is in 3 figures. I get almost as any spammers as you do. 3-4/day... In fact due to the crap newbies have to go through to join the spammers have killed my forum before it even got started. It is a more serious problem than people realize.

I use Bluehost for a server and can set addys so the only messages accepted are ones I approve. Then set up all accounts on Outlook express.

I just made a quick modification to the forums...

No one can post to any forum other than the NEWBIE forum for their first post.

Hopefully this new feature will help cut down on the amount of SPAM that is generated on the site.

What's going on with the forum archive section? Is it stuck? It looks like nothing new has been added except for a porn spam and a car insurance spam from a week ago, Sunday Mar. 2nd.

It already seems to be making a difference. I usually report at least 8-10 spams a day, and nary a one so far today.

Don is correct,  Although the Archived Vault generally consists of inactive threads that fall into locked status after several months, there are two March 2 '08 spam posts that managed to find themselves a place within the Archive area (both listed as locked too), It seems that specifically afternoon and evening March 2nd last week spammers somehow had access to the Archive Vault area (as well).

Well,  they too have been reported.

Those spam that landed in the archive were meant to be sent to the vault and not to the archive. Sometime the mod make the wrong selection and that is where it landed. The archive and the vault are next to each other in the pulled down window.

It's understandilbe of course that such mistakes happen Jian; It seemed quite sophisticated (on the spammers part) assuming they had the capability to spam locked archives.  I was wondering just how sophisticated these spammers had become LOL
