This is my opinion -

Posting the songbook has very little to do with exposure and promoting a show. I suspect very few people go to any manufacturer site looking for song lists for a karaoke show. There is a chance it may get stumbled on during a web search but it would take a detailed query to find it.

Posting the songbook is a validation test. If a certified host posts their list at Sound Choice with 20-30k songs then prints a book with 2-3 times as much, then it is likely they are trying to beat the system. I think that is a good safety valve for compliance.

That said, there is no valid reason for not posting the song list that I can think of. Whether you have the right or not is inconsequential. posting the songbook is basically a neutral action. It doesn't promote the show and it doesn't detract from it either. It merely helps demonstrate compliance and transparency and *might* increase discoverability very slightly.

Just for grins and giggles I checked to see who's song books were on line at SC.

The site stated that if the License Number was underlined you could check out the song book for that KJ...

Number of entries.......ZERO

I think it should be an option to post if you want to.

I really don't think that SC will ever update the list so it would soon be outdated anyway.

Actually, that page has had a major update in just the last week. The middle section listing the GEM owners was about 1/5th of what it is today.

I emailed Kurt about the songbook listings just now. I also noticed that I am the only one with no certificate number listed. :(

I was talking about updating the songbook listing.
I don't think that SC will ever update a KJ's songbook.

They will keep updating their certified KJ's list until it get's to be a big hassle for them.

I also noticed that there are NO certified KJ's in TX!
I wonder why that is?

Until recently the songbooks were available for most KJs. They are in the process of revamping that page, so they may have temporarily taken the songbooks down. They will eventually move to a system where the KJ updates his songbook directly, but (as you can see from the site, which they acknowledge is not great right now) they're not there yet.

There aren't any certified KJs in Texas because we have not yet been active with lawsuits in Texas, so no one has stepped forward to be audited.

REALLY? Do you REALLY think there are a whole bunch of people in my area looking at Sound Choice's site reading songbooks?? Maybe in big cities, but not where I am.

Then why would it matter if it's listed or not?

I'd rather they read my songbook online than come in and steal one from my show! Doesn't happen much anymore, but sure used to irritate me!

The company I took the books from actually encouraged it as they advertised heavily on the books.
I don't take books anymore as most have gone to binders for their books.

Um, no real advertisement in my books.. and have always been in binders. That's what ticked me off.. my books cost about $20 a piece.. time, paper, sheet covers, & binder.. maybe more than $20 a piece. Shoot, a decent binder is $8!

I'd bet the time putting the sheets in covers at your normal hosting rate would put you over $20 a book.

Yes, it most certainly would!! I haven't figured the price in a long time... my books are way big now and the binders etc are more..so even without the hours it takes.. I'm over $20. (Was being conservative! ;) )

Good grief - do this: http://www.songbookslive.com. You get a unique
id to use after it and folks can easily search it on their cell phone - no more
printing books people - stop it.

I will be doing that soon! Updating my book now, partly for that purpose! Will be glad to be rid of stacks of books.. will keep one of artist and one of song for those that need it. Looking into a kiosk also. But one thing at a time!! Working on getting new CB songs in harddrive and songbook, then will start on SC audit. THEN I'll do the songbooklive thing!!

Rick, what if some customers don't have a smartphone? Then there up asking if you have this or that. I like having songbooks and so do our singers. It's and interresting concept, and could cut down on the amount of books needed for sure...And just how much is that costing you?

Jon

Since Rick isn't online... :)
SongbooksLive is $11 per year. Not bad huh? And I agree, have to keep at least one of each book for those without smartphone (like me!!) Funny, in the past 6 - 12 months.. people grab a book then don't look through it, they just come up and ask me anyway!

You might want to check out songbookdb.com its still currently in development but there's been a ton of updates in the fast couple of months. Shaun is eager to hear requests from KJ's and has implemented quite a few suggestions from them.

He started a thread on here a while back with contact info for anyone wanting to be a beta tester.

Ask Mickey, he was the guru behind it.
