I heard this story from a friend of a friend who heard it maybe from someone else..... (((((TRYING TO FIGURE OUT IF TRUE OR IF SOMEONE ELSE HAS EVER HEARD))))))))
Guy walks into a bar in NJ, flashes some sort of ID stating he is from Sound Choice and begins to advise the KJ that they believe the HARD DRIVE they are using is illegal or at least PARTIALLY full of illegal tracks. Demands the KJ hands over the drive for investigation right there on the spot. KJ hands over drive .........
Again..... I'm not sure of all the details and this could be either a scam or a made up story ... Any one ever heard of such a thing ???

Well...I really don't care who they are or where they are from. I'm not handing over any of my business equipment to some random dude that walks in......ever

Should never hand over the drive unless they have a warrant for it. Sound Choice is not going to do that in the first place. First they are going to send an investigator that is not going to announce himself to you. Then they will serve you with a letter of intent to sue and then if you don't respond they sue you. That is how they are operating. Nothing is public until they actually sue you unless YOU make it public.

Agreed, the only one who'd ever be allowed to take any piece of my equipment would be a law enforcement officer with a valid signed warrant covering the seizure of my equipment. All SC can do is file a lawsuit, they have no other authority (for that matter neither do ASCAP, BMI or any of the others without being accompanied by law enforcement with a court order).
This story sounds like fiction to me.

Sounds like complete Urban Legend to me, right up there with the old lady drying her poodle in the microwave, Bill Gates sending you $100 for forwarding emails and killer's hiding in the back seat of your car.
I will bet if you tried to locate this person, you couldn't.

If true, sounds like a criminal is using the state of karaoke as a means to steal harddrives. Neither the police or professional private investigators would act in this manner. Unless they have a warrant, I'd call the police. If people are trying this, they are attempting theft and using Sound Choice (or other manufacturers as the scam may change from place to place) to accomplish it.
BTW only law enforcement can get a search warrant. Anyone else requires a subpoena and any items on that have to be brought to court or verified by the court in another manner such as using court bailiffs, etc. For example, rather than bringing in thousands of discs to the court, the court could have their personnel go out and verify it. But again you would have appeared before the action was taken.

I'm from NJ, and never heard of it. Sounds like a scam to me, because from what I've heard SC folks don't identify themselves- just watch.
When was this supposed to have happened? The reason I ask is that SC only wandered into NJ starting August first of this year- in other words, last month.

Man, if someone without a badge demanded me to hand over my hard drive, I'd wip him around, break him down like a shotgun, and load my hard drive right up his a$$.......course I'm old, and tend to exagerate a bit... ....but I'd like to think I would......

Yeah.. sounds like either total BS or some ballsy crook.
Years ago there was a guy flashing a game warden badge at fishermen along a river.. if the fisherman didn't have a valid fishing license, the official would confiscate their poles and tacklebox.
Only problem was, the dude was flashing a fake badge. It was just some dude loading up on free fishing poles and gear.
I'm no lawyer.. but I know of no circumstance when a private citizen can seize another persons physical property.. or even their own property without the consent of the person in possession of said property.

Exactly where in Jersey did they wander too? Just curious, I'm from Jersey too.

Nope. Or at least, per Kurt. We got into a somewhat antagonistic dialogue, and he let it slip that they were hitting upstate NY and NJ as of August first.
Admittedly, I've seen no effect, but that's what he said....

Don't know, except that I know Northern NJ was in included ( my area is Bergen County).

I wish it was that easy for them to do, then just maybe I could run a show where my venue owner would calm down and quit worring about the business they are potentially losing to the bar down the street that has a known Pirate running their show the same night as mine. Hell, if all it takes is the badge then maybe i need to try that myself . Who wants to drive the getaway car as I run out of the bar wna half the bar chasing me?
I am pretty sure what you were told was urban legend. If it really happened that way, it serves the KJ (victim) right for not doing his/her homework. If they (KJ) are not informed as to their local laws as any true business owner should then they shouldn't be in business anyway.

Yeah, if someone came in and said "give me your harddrive", I'd say "yeah, I've got your harddrive (right here) for ya"!! That ought to get the point across.

Another Urban Legend .... You don't lose business because a KJ is using a loaded hardrive. The only people who should be concerned with pirates is the MFG who got caught being pirates themselves and now BEND the US laws so they can make money again. Venues and KJ lose business for many other reasons than library size these days ... in the past YES maybe the large selection was a selling point but I don't believe anymore .
