I know there was an issue with SCDGs and the reputable manufacturers no longer make them. Here is my problem:
I have Chartbuster Essentials 1-6 on SCDG. The early stuff by CB isn't bad, but it isn't great either (but some songs are just BAD!).
Anyway, the problem with taking songs off a SCDG is that they are compressed so much that they don't sound as good as a song that was taken from a SCDG and ripped at 256 or higher.
Does anyone think I would run into problems if I copied someone's CDG version of CBES 1-6? Since I already have the license, I would think that this wouldn't be a problem. I mean, would anyone really even know?

I am not asking to copy anyone's CDGs - let me make that clear. I was actually thinking about picking up the CBES on Ebay, copying and replacing the same files and selling it back on Ebay.

Well if you bought the 1-6 'disc' set, you would then have the originals to back up anything on the computer. Since the SCDG's are ripped so low quality to begin with (128 was fine when hard drives were expensive), you will get a better quality taking the time and ripping at the best rate.

Someone on another forum just reported on doing a voluntary audit of their system with CB and CB made them pull their SDCGs from their library as they said they hadn't authorized them to be made. It was suggested that anyone who has CB SCDGs call the company for the info on how to determine if what they have is an illegal copy.

Interesting since CB had produced some SCDG discs in the past and even sold them, but quit making them shortly after they started. Not sure which discs were actually made and sold though CB.
I have seen CB SCDG's lately and have been told those were not authorized. Chartbuster Karaoke has stated here that any CB SCDG currently available are more than likely not legal to begin with since they haven't authored them for several years now.

The link I was going to give was to a private section of a forum so I just paraphrased it for the OP in a PM. But it must be on this site somewhere today that CB commented on the SCDG thing as I know they said something and I can't find it on the other forum--something to the effect of giving the songs to a company to make the SCDGs but then the deal fell through but the company kept making and selling the SCDGs anyway. That is why you need to call them and have them tell you how to tell if you have the "bad" ones or not.

Okay, I'm only half crazy. What I read about the legality of the SCDGs wasn't directly from CB but from someone else who had been to the same meeting relating what they had heard happened--that CB sent the masters to a company to make the SCDGs but they were never paid for them so consider them to be "stolen" or illegal copies. But again that is hear-say so probably call CB just to get the straight scoop yourself. But the one fellow did have to remove something like 2700 songs from his library due to having purchased the unauthorized ones.

Thank you. Looks like I am going to have to give CB a call. I kind of wonder if that is MY problem or theirs. I mean, if they did not get paid for their contract but went as far as sending them the music, I would think that this is between CB and the SCDG manufacturer and not me.

It would be no different than a hard drive supplier selling you a hard drive with the same Chartbuster sets. If the SCDG sets are not authorized or sold by Chartbuster, then they are illegal copies & would fall back to you and your new lawsuit to the store that sold them to you.
But again if you are planning to buy the same original disc sets off of ebay that are on your current SCDG, then the SCDG sets are no longer an issue.

I was at the same meet up and this is what they told me: They aren't going to hold it against the end user as they bought it in good faith. The rub comes in if you knew they were illegal before you bought them. I don't know what the other person was talking about because they never told me I had to delete my copies. I have one set of the supercdg's.

If the CB SCDG's are illegal why doesn't CB put a stop to the karaoke stores or ebay sellers selling the CB 1-6 SCDG's. I have seen no effort to promote that the SCDG's are illegal or to get them removed from ebay by CB. I would think CB would inform their customers of illegal software being sold on ebay as to not cause any futher upset CB customers from not being informed. CB has done a great job of informing thier customers in the past of illegal content why stop at the SCDG's.

No kidding. You would think that if they had a legal right to do so, all they would have to do is make a quick call to Ebay.

It's not that easy to contact e-bay. It takes several days between correspondences. And, by the time e-bay receives the contact, the seller has already made a sale. All e-bay can do is remove an auction once they are notified of its existence. They don't prevent new auctions of the same product from appearing.

But, he also said that after he reformatted that newly acquired set, he would re-sell it on e-bay. So, that would mean he doesn't have those original discs anymore... just the original SCDGs.

OK time for Chartbuster (who I know is on here) to chime in and let us know what is what.
Someone from Chartbuster please respond.
Thanks
