You are showing your ignorance now.
You do actually need a sound module to hear it through.
I'd be delighted if you could provide an example of any sound module at any price reproducing a convincing guitar track for the lead to Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven'.
Or even Lenny Kravitz' 'Are you gunna go my way'.
I stand by my original assessment.. MIDI has come a long way, and does reproduce many instruments very well, but still lacks in the electric guitar department.
But if i'm way off, please, feel free to provide some examples of MIDI belting out the solo to Guns 'n Roses' 'Sweet Child O' Mine'.

And what about backing vocals?
I have yet to hear midi files that have them....

I disagree, piracy is a huge problem. I go out to sing often and I hear people who are no informed saying "I love this place, they have all the songs I want to sing" not knowing that they KJ just purchased $300 pirated hard disk and is using it for their show. It means someone who is doing business legitimately is hurting because of this misconception.

Gemini, maybe a bit of economics for you. You want new songs but that takes money to produce. If people are pirating music then the producers cannot make money in order to produce more, unless they are fools and want to lose their shirts.
Piracy was one of the main reasons why Canadian producers shut down. They wanted to do more but without money coming in from sales (due to piracy), they couldn't afford to do more.

Like I said.. MIDI has come a long way since my Mac Classic with a Sound Canvas days, but it's still not as convincing as the drum and piano sounds.
Listening to most of the examples on that page, lots of cool stuff.. but the driven stuff just sounds like an awful mid 80's Digitech processer.. RP-1 kinda sound.
Which.. might be great if you're doing a song from that era.
jerry12x.. that was some cool stuff.. definitely would be fun to play with.. but again.. at least to my ear.. sounded like 80's Digitech processed guitar.
A chunk or a fill here and there, you probably wouldn't be able to tell it's MIDI.. but a whole song and that's your only guitar? It would probably be pretty obvious.

A big chuck of what is in CDG come from MIDI. The karaoke tracks that you sing to are mostly created from MIDI. Any manu that claim that they use 'real' musician and musical instrument in all of their tracks is not telling the truth. And that is the truth.

Which is precisely why we are constantly on the prowl, hunting down the ever-elusive perfect /close-to-the original version...

..even the original recording may have MIDI generated audio, depending on the artist/Band.

I would venture to say that that is the very rare exception, rather than the rule.

I think we have to agree that whatever "sounds like midi" to the untrained ear is probably low quality midi, and is often pretty poor quality. But what doesn't sound like midi can be good.
A big problem also with the download/shared midi that is so common out there in home-made karaoke is also that it is usually highly compressed. I have heard of CDs or DVDs claiming to hold thousands of songs. The only way that can be done effectively is to record them with a very high compression which comprimizes whatever quality was there in the first place. Yes the MIDI track themselves (in midi form) may not take up much disk space, but if it is going to be re-converted into music using the samples avalible on a random PC the quality will be poor. THerefore most midi tracks I have seen are distributed as MP3s, but recorded at a low rate.

This is true. Even when I worked in a studio back in the 90s, using MIDI to play
the keyboards was important. It has now taken over. Remember that MIDI is just
a signal telling an electronic instrument what note to play. The instrument then plays
it right every time, with no errors. High end recording studios cost big money to use, and using MIDI cuts down on re-recording a track because the human player got it wrong.
Country music probably has very little MIDI, as the instruments are 'real', but the majority of manufactured pop in the charts is MIDI based.
The quality of the sound has nothing to do with MIDI. It sounds bad on your PC because you have a $2 sound chip in it.

You bet. And you'd be amazed at how many MIDI samples are in the typical album.
I know some people in the business, and there is plenty of MIDI in lots of things. Particularly when you get into things with orchestral sounds -- the London Philharmonic is not laying down those tracks most of the time.
MIDI is even more common in live performance. Sometimes it's an engineer, but often the keyboard player, running the sequencer for certain songs. From things as simple as a click track to an instrument they don't have with them, they usually have "Cakewalk" or some other package. The band I know travels with two separate laptops and three separate hard drives with the stuff, in case a laptop fails.
