Even if you shoot someone, it is not illegal to own a gun. You don't get arrested for owning the gun. You get arrested for how you (mis)use the gun. There are numerous news reports of "accidental" shootings where no arrests are made. The shooting is investigated and deemed an accident, and the gun owner is still allowed to own the gun.
