Hi Guys... I'm really happy i found this site. Judging by some of the posts, and replies, it looks like I'm in the right place :D

I recently bough half of my old karaoke/dj company, and am looking to make a dent in the karaoke sene around here. After extensive searching through licensing, I've decided to move digital and keep everything hard drive driven.

But I want to do something different.

I want for my customers to have most of the control over what goes into my books, by aquiring songs on the fly as requests for them come in. I've found a couple of sites that I can do this with, but only one of them (Tricerasoft) does everything that I want it to do, and more. Yet with the absolutely large selection they have, there are still some key songs missing.

Other sources I've come across like buykaraokedownloads.com. They use pirmarily Top Tunes, Top Hits Monthly, and Legends. I inquired about their licensing, and was assured I can use them in professional shows, but their site is kind of a pain to use, and the lack of ID3 tagging in their songs kind of makes me question their legallities. You would think that would be a no-brainer.

Last source I've come across is karaoke-version.com. I again have been assured over licensing. I love their sound quality, but their selection is small and very expensive.

So which brings me to my questions. Tricerasoft aside, has anyone used these other two sources for music, and have any feedback? Also, does anyone know of anymore sources out there that deal with mp3+g that are legal for commercial use?

Anything you can tell me would be awesome :)

Happy singing!

-Chris

I've used SBI karaoke and Karafun, and have been pleased with both sites. Both have songs that many other manufactures don't have. I like their choice of medleys. (Which most other companies don't have).

Try the new KJPro hard drive from Chartbuster. You can order enough credits to fill a show and have an all request show from there. just take a csv file from Compuhost and create a wish list catalog that instantly you can get the songs on the fly.

As to whether any karaoke downloads are truly licensed for public performance - it is my understanding that they are not.

I prefer Tricerasoft primarily because of the quality of their tracks and most importantly, ease of checkout. But, as with all karaoke, you will never find every song in one spot, so you will probably need to use more than one site to find what you are looking for.

I generally use these products in my show only until the song eventually comes out on my Chartbuster monthly release.

I had no idea I could use Karafun.... I thought that was strictly online stuff. Thank you :) I'll check that out.

@Danny I already have a selection that's big enough to fill a show... or at least it was 6 years ago.. lol... but me being me, I just want the biggest and best and want more of it... just without the songs that noone will ever sing. Plus, I think I have my heart set on PCDJ for a player, but thanks for the heads up :)

My understanding of it is that some sites have there tracks licensed for commercial use as long as the company or venue that uses them are licensed for it as well. Something like Karaoke Channel (StingRay) sells high quality songs, but are not licenced properly for commercial use, and are meant for personal use only... where as Tricerasoft is meant to be used in shows. So far, it's been kind of a trial and error thing for me... I just ask before using them.

Really... when you boil it all down, the laws around digital karaoke are totally archaic, and need updating bad lol.

No downloads are legal in the US because no licensing agency is available for the US like it is for the UK.
The beauty of the KJ HD pro is you only need to unlock the songs you need and the entire chartbuster library is available to you for legal use in a professional show. So you need not worry about the person coming up asking for the song you do not have and no need to be hooked up to the internet to unlock the songs. You can access them right at your show when you get asked for them. The drive's song catalog is upgradable when you get home to get the latest and greatest songs.
You do however need Compuhost to unlock these songs. after that you can use them in any player that will play MP3+G.

Hmmm... Thanks for that Danny, that really makes me question what I've been told.

I'm up in Canada, and through the sites that I've been working with, I've been told that as long as I or the venue (depending on the scenario) is registered and paid up with SOCAN, these songs that I use are ready to go in public performances

I am under the impression that Karaoke Versions do no include the lyric swipes. Am I incorrect? I'm not digital so I have no way of knowing for sure- it's just what I was told...

I would guess that SOCAN can cover you. I said within the USA. Wasn't including Canada with that.

Joe,

They sell many of their tracks both ways. You can get all of their material as mp3 backing tracks and many of their songs are also standard mp3+g karaoke tracks. If you go to their website you can preview their selections.

Thanks, Danny, but not what I asked. I know they have background music. The question was whether lyric swipes appear as well?

EDIT: OOPS, posted too quickly. They come both ways- got it.

Yep, but not all of their selection come with lyric swipes, they start off as instrumentals only, then have to be voted on whether lyric swipes will be added.
