If you read that headline and immediately thought "WTF?" then join the club. You might remember the story from last month where four people died when a festival tent at Pukkelpop in Belgium collapsed during a severe thunderstorm. Naturally, the festival organizers had insurance to cover these sorts of catastrophic things. So if you're the adjuster assigned to the case, to what would you assign blame? The tent manufacturer? Those who erected the tent? Perhaps those in charge of supervising the tent? No. You blame illegal file-sharing. Here's the insurance companies' reasoning: Illegal file-sharing has led to fewer CD sales. Fewer CD sales have forced artists, managers and labels to emphasize the live music experience--including festivals, of course--to make up for the lost revenue. Emphasizing live gigs attracts people. And should a thunderstorm strike, those people risk being killed or injured. Bottom line? If people didn't trade music illegally online, then none of this would have happened. +++++++++++++++++++++ I repeat--- WTF? |

Hahaha! That's one of the best stretches I've heard in a long time. Thanks for the laugh! |

This logic was not carried out to its' natural conclusion. This scale of file sharing would not be possible without the internet. The internet would not be possible without computers. In 1919 J. Royden Peirce and Herman Hollerith funded by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, the largest insurance firm in the world, and Prudential Assurance Company, the largest British life insurance firm, developed the first successful alphabetical tabulating and printing machines for their company the Tabulating Machine Company. In 1924 the Tabulating Machine Company merged with three others to become International Business Machines (IBM). It would seem the responsibilty for this whole mess lies at the hands of insurance companies. |

Not for nothing, but I had to re-read your entire quote not once, but TWICE to try and figure out why you were posting an entire quote, and not posting anything yourself.... that is, until I FINALLY saw the one line which jdmeister did NOT post within your quote. I posted a topic thread complaining about this very thing... why do you (in general) find it necessary to post an ENTIRE QUOTE (which sometimes consist of a whole string of entire quotes), just to respond to 1 or 2 lines within it? viewtopic.php?f=1&t=22081&hilit=quotes Why can't you take the part of the quote that you really need to use, to drive your point across? I'm really getting very tired of reading (what has sometimes become) entire pages which consist of just 1 or 2 posts, and having to re-read the same content two and three and four times over again, because they are just re-quotes of the exact same posts. |

If I come across a post that is difficult to read because it's somehow too long or misquoted, I just skip it. It's not like you're going to miss anything monumental around here. Most of it has all been said before, anyway. I agree that it's not necessary to quote an entire post, but what are you going to do? You can ask nicely, and you have, and it hasn't changed anything, and you can scold people, and that also hasn't changed anything. You can't control people's behavior. Besides -- is it really that important? Really? |

Apologies to Cue and all. While I have the knowledge to use the forum tools correctly, I made an error after a very long and late show. Sometimes this happens. I DO understand how annoying it can be, though. Once again, my apologies. |
