I keep seeing posts about illegal hard drives that have over 100,000 songs on them... and KJ's boasting of 80,000+ songs....

Just how many of those songs are duplicates of the same manu & Artist & Song?

What do you suppose is a great sized library WITHOUT those duplicates?

Figuring that CB sells their entire library of 12,000 songs.
If SC has.. what? At least that many but even double that, total would be 36,000 (CB+SC) Does one really need copies of the same songs, by any other manu?

No and many songs on those drives include LOTS of foreign language songs as well. One book I actually saw from a guy touting that many had massive duplication listed. How many people need 20 versions of Friends In Low Places and 30 copies of The Rose. Almost every song listed was in there at least twice.
Funny thing about those people, I don't worry about them anymore, people come in and tell me that I actually have the songs they are looking for over these 100K kj libraries.

That's what I thought. I don't come across many requests that I don't have. There are some, like Red Solo Cup....
I hear from people constantly that I have a HUGE library.. I'm not finished with the FileMgr yet, but I bet I'm around 20,000 with very few duplicates.... I don't think I have but a few foreign language songs.

Go through All Star Karaoke & buy a custom disc. They have Red Solo Cup.
http://www.all-star-karaoke.com/ - stupid/fun song, but it does get sung alot.
After nearly 20 years of buying music, i'm only at 13K non dups.

My legal library is 40,000 total tracks. I imagine it would be 1/2 of that or less if I filtered dupes. I have to print new books for my new show so I am going to make an effort to filter it down to save on printing costs and make it easier to manage the library.

My guess from the years of singing and my short experince in building my own library is that very few people that have more than 50,000 tracks are legal. Huge duplication, and often still are missing songs people sing.

If KJ has a 100,000 + song collection but doesn't have Wicked Game by Chris Isaak, they are doing something very wrong (in my opinion!)

I have Wicked game on SC and Dk :)
That's one thing I like about FileMgr and Song List Generator, if I take the disc Id out using Mgr, then export it to generator; Generator will find the dups and drop them from the book. So my books have no duplicates....however, the manu's won't be listed in the book. My experience though, when I did have the manu in there, people would ask me over and over "what does CB mean?" I got tired of explaining. If someone wants to know if I have their preferred brand, they can ask.
My biggest thing now is finding my sc8125! I have two of them and they've disappeared! My boss said he took one and used it for a voice lesson he was giving and can't remember where he put it! GRRRRR
I'm hoping the other original is in the Disc Case we take to the venue. Heartache Tonight is one of my favorites to sing!

I should say..
Open the folder in FileMgr > highlight all > Export/convert THEN open that folder in Generator > Generate Songlist > A window will come up giving you options on how to export the list .. you need to choose a format without the disc ID by choosing the correct settings in that window. I'm just at that stage now.. I've done it before, about a year ago.... and can't remember the exact settings.. trial and error is how I finally got it back then. It doesn't take long for it to show you what your end result will be. I do know you do have to limit the 'Data Columns' number to 2

OH...and it's pretty important to make sure all your artists and titles are named in the same format ie: Eagles, The - Heartache Tonight vs. Eagles - Heartache Tonight ( this will cause Generator to print them both)

Generator doesn't take long... but filemgr, making sure formats are all correct, takes FOREVER! I've been working on it for days... just with the CB HD songs

While it is certain that larger libraries give create greater opportunities, I have often posted - and still believe- that most shows pretty much rely on a "top 300" from which the majority of the songs are sung. Of course this 300 changes eventually, but the quantity still seems to stick.

I'm in there with Lon at carrying about 13,000 individual titles, though I carry a few thousand dupes too, as my singers often have brand preferences. About 1800 discs in binders.I also own another 4-5,000 foreign language and another thousand kids songs that I carry to private events. I have another 5K or so sitting in boxes that I have gotten at sales and swap meets that have yet to be entered, and that happens only per disc at need..

How many Spanish songs you guys got? We may have you beat in that category. Last count we have our "now legal" non-dup English up to 7557 and our Spanish is 1886. Come May with the Gem, I'll boost it up another 4000 or so. So we'll be around 13,000 songs also...I think we lead the pack in ASK custom CD's at 33 so far and more on the way. Not bad, 495 songs for $220.

I don't really know how many.. ricky martin and selena are some I can think of.. but the TRUE Spanish songs, I probably don't have any. I've had a call for one or two in 13 years... Northern Cali just doesn't get the call for them. Hardly anyone here speaks Spanish... La Bamba is a disaster when sung! LOL

Is that because nobody knows the words, and just sings "ba da ba da da la Bamba"?

I've been thinking of adding that one to my sing list, but, then again, I actually know the Spanish words (Para bailar la Bamba, se necesita una poca de gracia, para mi y para ti, y arriba, y arriba, and so on.) But it is a little high for my middle-aged baritone, even though soy capitan. (For Spanish-speakers, sorry for the lack of accents.)

That seems like cheating to me. I'm kind of a purist. (I hate the designated hitter, too.) I find that when I get on the stage, a little rush of adrenaline helps me hit the high notes. I just can't hit them as precisely or for as long as I used to be able to. That's why I like singing Willie Nelson so much. His vocal range matches mine.

Even bands drop tune their instruments for live performances oftentimes. Remember the song was written for someone with a different range, if it was written for you, it would have been written in a key to fit your range, make it fit your range, don't try to push a range you don't have! I instill this into my singers.

Also, if you aren't using your voice properly to reach those notes, you could cause damage.
Our voices lower as we age.. a natural process. I saw Bette Midler not too long ago... she has lowered her key to fit her newage (sic) range. Lots do it. :)
