Post subject:  Another Win....

Today I secured a Sun-Thurs gig at a great club near me. They saw an ad I placed on Craigslist looking for venues and just so happens they were specifically looking for a certified host. They were intrigued by my "Triple Certification".

I wish i could say they found me on the Sound Choice certified site, but this works for me as well. They did contact Sound Choice a couiple weeks back because they had heard about the lawsuits and wanted more information. I asked if they were directed to the certified hosts page on the SC web site, and they said they were not. Sound Choice really does need to do a better job of promoting certified hosts.

Now for the really fun part. I will be competing head-to-head with another established karaoke club that is literally 500 yards away and does karaoke 7 nights a week. The club where I am at actually tried to hire away their hosts but when that host could not prove they were legal, they started looking for other options.

Fortunately, this club has a very well established clientele that asked them to bring karaoke back after a multi-year absence.

The final piece of good news - I only have to provide my laptop, music, and a flat-panel for singer lyrics. I will be using their sound system.

This "hobby" of mine, just got very real :)

Keeping my fingers crossed. I may be getting a gig on Tues and/or Wed at a bar also looking to replace their illegal karaoke company. Also, it was word of mouth. My experience over the last 12 years has been who you know, not what you know or promotions, sadly.

When things like this start to happen around here I will step forward with certification. For now, nobody cares. It's not even worth bringing up who has legal music and who does not. I have the CB certification with the deal of buying the HD. I didn't sign any agreement and don't have to surrender information about my business activities. When SC has a similar deal and/or has shown a presence here I will act, especially if I see vanishing karaoke companies.

Not only that, but in another thread, she was talking about herself in the third person. That was a pretty short vacation.

no actually I did not realize my husband was logged in as he normally doesnt post here. And much like others my spouse does tend to defend me. Yes I guess it was a short vacation(my temper cooled quicker than I expected and the threads that were troublesome were removed). The Mods here have already addressed the fact that my husband and I do have separate accounts in the same household.(but good try). I have no need to refer to myself in third person or have two accounts.Sorry No cat to let out of the bag.

When it rains, it pours....

I just picked up another gig a moment ago.

This one had nothing to do with certification, lawsuits or anything else related to that. I was contacted by a bar I had spoken to a few months back. At that time they had another host doing a show for them. That host apparently moved a few weeks later and they did not replace them.

Fast forward to a few days ago - Someone reserved their place for a wedding reception and the couple wants karaoke and DJ. The bar saved my business card and gave me a ring about the reception which we booked. They called me back a few minutes ago to ask about doing a monthly show with a possibility of going every other week. We hammered out the details and we are a go.

Chris,

Why wouldn't Harrington and his investigators be moving right away on a known illegal KJ operating right across the street from their guy? Seems like they'd want to help you out with that?

My guess is they don't know about them. I am only repeating what the owner of the venue I will be at said. Until I have a chance to check them out, I am reserving judgement. The owner of the club I will be at seems to be pretty savvy. He hosted himself many years ago and had karaoke at this current club some years ago before changing focus.

Chris, first I wish you congratulations on picking up a new venue!

One caveat: Be sure you check the house system using karaoke tracks way in advance of your start date.

Some clubs have crappy equipment, of course- but that's an easy spot. On the other hand, some clubs have top of the line DANCE systems that sound great with DJ music, but sound either awful or overpowering for karaoke. You could do a walk through while their music is playing and think it's a great system, and then find that karaoke sounds horrible.

Check it out with your tracks, then go kick butt!

I loved one club I played at that I used their house equipment, full 48 channel A & H board, full rack of dbx, Symetrix and other top of line gear, 2 dual 18" subs per side, on top of those were 2 JBL dual 12" 3 way tops. Approx 20,000 watts total for the mains. It sounded sweet!
Too bad the owner got rid of all live music and put in pool tables instead!

I will be in Friday to do a sound check. If things don't sound right, I will bring in my own gear for the Sunday show date start.

They have several sets of speakers and some big subs, but even they weren't sure what worked since it is the weekend DJ's that connect into the sound.

I may use this as an opportunity to invest in some real good sound. I don't have a separate sub and I have wanted to get one for a while now but couldn't really justify it for the locations I was in.

Post subject:  Re: Another Win....

I tie into the house system for my Monday night gig. They feed me into one of the channels of the DJ board and then into the amps. There have been times when it seemed that what I was trying to do and how their board was set (dance music not vocals), were working against each other.

A few months ago, the house DJ got the owner to spring for a DBX PA+. One of the first things we did after he got things programed for his needs, was set up a separate setting just for karaoke. We both came in early and spent a couple of hrs roughing things in and then he spent some time during the show with a crowd in the bar fine tuning. The difference in sound was night and day. My regular hard core singers noticed the difference right off the bat and even the 'here just to have fun singers' commented on how the sound was even better than normal.

Our next project is to get the owner to spring for an audio router so I can bypass the DJ board altogether and go straight into the DBX at the push of a button.

if it's a regular mixer and not a "DJ Mixer" you can also run your main outs into the aux returns on the house board and that will bypass all EQ, etc. straight into the board and straight out to the DBX.
