I've seen a program where you can remove vocals from an original CD and add your own vocals. I see it quite often on my FB page. Is it legal? I don't know anything about it. |

The bottom line? They don't work well at all. There have been many magic boxes and program that claim to eliminate vocals over the years. They all work by some variation of phase cancellation, which essentially notches out center channel audio. You will never eliminate all the vocals and you will always here the ghostly echo of the original because the reverb & effects are not centered. I would only recommend going down that road if it is a MUST-HAVE song and not available from any manufacture. And even then, you wont be very pleased with the result. |

I think it would depend on what you were going to do with the recording .. you are talking about recording your vocals with the music on a cd? For what purpose? As a demo? Then I think you'd have to have special permissions from the copywrite holders. If it's for your home enjoyment and not public in any way... no problem (personal opinion of course) I'm not a lawyer and don't play one on tv |

The program itself is legal. Using the program for your own personal enjoyment and listening pleasure would be legal. Using the program and paying the appropriate licensing fees to the rights holders of the music and lyrics for usage beyond your own personal use only would be legal. Using the program and publicly playing your new finished product at a karaoke show would be in conflict with the law, but your chances of facing consequences from the actual rights holders would be low due to the relative size of your audience. Using the program and uploading your finished product to a website would be in conflict with the law, and your chances of facing consequenses would be increased because of the larger potential audience. Using the program and selling your finshed product to third parties without proper licensing would be in conflict with the law, and could attract enough attention to get you sued out of business. But if you register your trademark beforehand, you may be able to recover those losses by suing the people you sold it to. |

So, if I took a song from, let's say..... hmmmmm, Wynonna, and took out or almost took out the vocal as the program would do, and sang it at a show it would be illegal? Just asking. |

I haven't heard "Here comes da judge" in a long, long, time! Johnny's one year older than I am. And that's old enough! We were both teenagers when Rowan and Martin was on.... |
