Post subject:  Licensing for karaoke show

Hello All,

I am planning on hosting a karaoke show at the local arts center and I was wanting to get some information. Since it is not a bar obviously I will be responsible for the licensing for the event so I have already contacted ascap and bmi. Are there any other companies that I would have to go through for additional licensing? Thanks

Usually the venue itself--the local arts center, in this case--is responsible for ASCAP, BMI and SESAC fees, and as a general rule they will not do business with you at all. Even though they are not a bar, if the arts center routinely hosts musical events, they probably already have a blanket license from the performing rights organizations, although it might need to be updated to include karaoke.

For the protection of the venue and of any sponsoring organization, as well as your own protection, it is recommended that you make certain that the karaoke tracks you use are either (1) played from lawful original media (i.e., from original manufacturers' discs or other manufacturer-created media), or (2) covered by an appropriate covenant not to sue/certification agreement, for non-original media from manus who have a media-shifting policy that requires it, or (3) confined to tracks from manufacturers who do not enforce any restrictions on media-shifting or who sell downloads.

Good luck! My clients like to see karaoke spreading to non-traditional venues. Congratulations on booking that show.

is this going to be a 1 time thing or will it be weekly, daily, monthly?

I am one that tends to go against the grain, a bit. If it is a one-off, I wouldn't worry about it. If it is going to be a regular show, them worry about it.
