If I own the original CDG and put up my singing performance of it in Youtube, should I ask for permission or get usage rights (license) from the karaoke manufacturer (for example SoundChoice) because I have now published it in a public place (the Internet)? How much will this license cost me per song? Will it complicate things if I partner up with youtube to get these videos monetized (allow youtube to show ads on them)?

Will I have to first undergo an audit (SoundChoice) to prove I have the original disc as part of this usage license?

If I want to sell my performance in iTunes using the karaoke track, what sort of usage rights setup is needed with the karaoke manufacturer because now I am selling the song?

It's my intention to approach the karaoke manufacturer and tell them I will be using their stuff in youtube and iTunes.

Feedback please. Thanks.

It may not be the manus you need to worry about, but the artists themselves.
Remember Prince had a cease and desist order sent to someone who put up a video of their 2 year old dancing to the song Let's Go Crazy faintly in the background.
Have heard of other - not so extreme - incidents like this where the artist got involved in the Youtube posters.

Actually the Harry Fox agency assured me that just this year, youtube has made an agreement with the music publishers for mechanical rights and synch rights. The youtube performer need not deal with the original artists, it's the k-manufacturers to be concerned about.

Well, if this site needs a login to see it, then it's not exactly public.

I met with an entertainment lawyer last week that says all the karaoke vids in youtube are not legit if no permission or usage rights were obtained from the k-manufacturers even tho youtube let's it go.

At any public venue, you must have permission to play it legally. Just because you can do it and the website allows it doesn't make it legal.

Yes, this is what I need;

"You must pay a master track fee to Sound Choice for the use of each Sound Choice song"

Anyone know how to apply for this? How much does it cost?

From what I understand KaraokeScene does take care of the licensing for SS.

Thanks Lonman. KaraokeScene knows SS needs to be licensed.

I guess I'll try to contact SC to apply and pay those master track fees. I wonder how much they'll cost...
