Hello Canada KJ's,

I've been trying to figure out what kind of a fees are required to be paid to SOCAN when a Karaoke machine is used in a store or public area.

The karaoke tariff doesn't seem to apply (#20 I think), nor do any other. I've been in touch with someone at SOCAN who hasn't been much help. Anybody here have any idea what tariff applies?

Sean

It would appear to be 20. Why would you think it was something else.

Because that tariff is for weekly events in "bars and similar establishments".

A one-time event in say an electronics store obviously doesn't fall under this tariff.

Here's a list with all the tariffs: http://www.socan.ca/licensees/music-use
and a tariff that I was told could apply: http://www.socan.ca/pdf/gazette/Tariff_8_GAZ.pdf

Once again, they don't give pricing for events in private stores and other places that aren't bars or halls.

Are there any Canadians that have actually looked this up with a lawyer?

If it is a one time event then look at 8. The max you would be looking at is $174.79 if there is dancing or $87.40 without dancing and that's for 500+ people.
