I'm not sure why you would say it surprises you that there is an increase of KJs in a down economy. It actually makes sense as karaoke is a cheaper form of entertainment for bars, even if a host were to make $250. Bands would cost a bar a minimum of $400 a night as would comedians, magicians, and the like. As for the suits, they take time as you can't take on the whole country at once, so you take it a piece at a time and get the message out there as you can. At least it's better than doing nothing. |

I have seen many Bars have a Band, and all they do is charge a Cover Charge to enter, and pay the band with that money. Some of those Bars may only give them a percentage of that Cover Charge, and some may pay them something like $100 plus the collected Cover Charge (or percentage of that). That works out cheaper for the bar than hiring a KJ at even $150 for a 4 hour show. |

Bands that play at casinos don't get cover charge, they get flat rates. Most of the bands that I know make anywhere from $1200-2000 a weekend. These are the gigs most bands try to get anymore around here. The clubs can pay lower, but most still usually pay $400-1000 per weekend. |
