So once again I was approached and asked to allow someone to copy my library. I explained that it was noisy and we should step outside, after which I explained the error of his ways- and added a NJ welcome.....
Ok, not the first time. But here is my question:
He offered me $650. While this is an insult compared to what I have paid, it' more than double what PC hosts say those Craigslist HDs with four times what I carry go for.
Anyone have any idea why this offer was made?

Perhaps you have a reputation for having a good, desirable library. $650 could be made back by selling 3 hard drives.

Anyone have any idea why this offer was made? Hmmmm, maybe it's the karaoke police offering you bait money? Just a wild guess, Joe. Probably not. I don’t think they will stoop down to engage in such treacherous entrapment-like schemes.

Anyone have any idea why this offer was made? Maybe the person in question hasn't looked at Craigs List (or heard of them.. there are some people out there that haven't). Or, maybe that person doesn't want to do business on Craigs List because he fears the Seller might be a Scammer (who just takes his money and doesn't send the product).

Maybe someone wanting to put together a loaded hard drive with "quality" rips.

Because like most criminals, they want something for virtually nothing. And people think music should be free.

Tim, I think Joe was asking why this person would come to him and offer $650 to copy his entire library, when that same person could purchase one of those (illegal) HDs for half that cost (and it would probably have 4 to 5 times the amount of tracks downloaded to it).

Chances are if an illegal HD seller is busted, the FBI or whoever will most likely be able to trace where the HDs were sent to through paperwork, ledgers (yes OC usually keep books like anyone else to control their illegal enterprises), and of course their computers though emails sent and transactions made.

Got to agree, and this was my first thought - but that would have bern seriously stupid as it sat. I'm starting to agree with RLC's post above. Maybe someone is building an HD to sell from scratch. In other words, ripping from original discs rather than selling copies of copies of copies? Of couse, that would assume some concern for quality and I can't imagine a pirate disty caring....

Perhaps he saw you slinging discs and thought he could help modernize you. Are you sure he wasn't offering to rip your collection to hard drive for you for the modest price of $650 so you could operate from computer?

I always loved getting that offer from people and seeing their facial expression when I flat out turn them down. First off - I'm not going to allow anyone to copy what I spent so much acquiring, and second, why would I want my competition to have what I offer - that is stupidity right there? People come to my shows BECAUSE I have what I offer. If they want the songs - buy them (or steal them yourself - whatever), you ain't getting it from me! And third, often when they told me they'd let me have a copy of their library in return - it was all the CRAP that I purposely avoided buying in the first place - no wonder THEY wanted it so bad!

Joe my first thought was they want your selection to directly compete against you down the road. Or.... (conspiracy theory) To get your selection, mass produce it on hds, sell them on the web, and then when/if caught, blame it all on you to the feds

Back when I first did my audit and certification with Sound Choice, I had a host working for me that had worked for another hosting company before. He happened to mention to the owner of that other company that I had recently finished up getting certified by Sound Choice, CB, and Stellar. A couple days later, the owner of that company called me up and asked if he could "borrow" my discs for a Sound Choice audit. I told him no of course, and explained to him that all the discs were marked during the audit, so borrowing wouldn't work. That was almost 3 years ago. Fast forward to today and my newest gig is one that the other karaoke company was kicked out of. This new venue turned me onto a place across the street that he was also kicked out of recently. A few months ago, one of his hosts approached me about jumping ship to work for me. I gave him my card and I suspect that i might here from him before the end off the year. The universe has a way of balancing things out....
