I was just thinking that we were finally getting some hits. I like "Little Talks" but no one has done it yet. But they were all over Darius Rucker's version of "Wagon Wheel" and the first guy who did it brought down the house. I'm also wondering how many are going to want to attempt Rhianna's "Stay" and Alicia Keyes "Girl On Fire."

Rihanna doesn't seem to get a lot of play here.

I've purchased new songs, but rarely do they get sung. Most of my singers are doing classic rock, country from the 90's and early 2000's and a lot of 80's dance music.
I buy the new stuff to keep current, but I think from now on I'll just bring a notepad to the shows, and ask people to write down any songs they'd like to sing that I don't have.

Same here, except mine spans from the 70s to early 2000's. Newer songs done are usually newer country. I too keep buying new for the 'to be current' sake & sometimes it does pay off, but 'new' music (as in current radio hits) isn't a make or break for me. Now buying 'new' songs for the above mentioned 70's-early 2000's are usually well received & get done often. Quote: I buy the new stuff to keep current, but I think from now on I'll just bring a notepad to the shows, and ask people to write down any songs they'd like to sing that I don't have. Been doing (and recommending this) for years. Track what your singers ask for (even certain artists), I buy primarily on request for anything OTHER than new stuff. On occasion if it's a well played artist, I might pick up some more songs on a hunch of the same artist - again, sometimes it does pay off, sometimes not.

'Been doing this for over a year now. No more yearly cd subscriptions, no more buying monthly cds. I have a clipboard hanging for everyone to see & below that is a sign: “Do you have a favorite song you want to sing but it’s not listed in the book? Write down all your requests on the clipboard & I will get it if it’s available/released for karaoke. Or email me your requests at: ---------@verizon.net”.

I keep a request list, too and will have to admit that most of the requests are of the 90s era or headbangers--but the exception is the kid shows--I think Fun's "Some Nights" got done about 5 times the last time. And they liked the Owl City/Carly Rae Jepson "Good Time." With the All Stars being so cheap, I take more chances buying the new songs but I never did the subscription thing because I like to pick and choose.

I'm sorry, but I simply cannot justify buying Stellar/All Star/ Quick Hits generic blah karaoke because they come out fastest, and replacing them with decent stuff later. Sybersound (Party Tyme) isn't super fantastical, but it's WAY better than the stuff above- and pretty quick on output as well. I'll also wait and get the UK product like Zoom, or Capital, or others.. Way back in the beginning, when I didn't know what folks liked, I was willing to exchange lower quality for more selection, then replace the popular stuff with better tracks. Now I feel better waiting for better quality.

It doesn't really matte rwhich version I get for the newer stuff - it doesn't get done enough to warrant trying to find or wait for a better version to begin with - All Star is perfectly fine for those who 'do' want it now (had 2 complaints to date in the last 3 years of buying from them - and I actually think one of those complaints were from a Sunfly version which I replaced with Karaoke Version and they were happy) - which is rare for these 'current radio hits' to be sung to begin with. If it's a song that might have some longevity & people actually complain or mention they've sang to a better version, i'll get something else - for 'new' stuff it's happened twice now in 3 years. Not going to wait for or replace a version if it doesn't get sung in the first place - better quality is not going to keep a newer song alive longer if it isn't going to be a song that lasts in the first place. I'll spend the lower amount & get it to make those that want it now happy for a couple weeks. If it shows people are interested in it & don't like or say something about the version I have, i'll replace it with another version. I'll spend my money on quality versions people actually ask for, want to sing or have complaints about versions I already have! Now granted, it's rare that I get complaints at all, and do still try to buy quality versions, but newer (current radio) doesn't normally warrant the best versions - at least in my experience. It doesn't get sung enough.

I like Zoom and used to buy current hits from the UK to get the best version but supposedly that is going to dry up so I am trying to keep my buying to those songs licensed for the USA.. Party Tyme is also good (not SC but is recorded at the SC studios, I'm told) and I thought they were right on in their last selections of hits discs but I had already had those songs for months.
Joe, I think you are putting words in my mouth. The only reason I would buy twice is if the version is bad and it is getting done a lot. I have replaced some SGBs for that reason but haven't had to replace any All Stars yet. And as I have mentioned, some of the brands you get on All Star include Pocket Songs, Chartbuster and Disney. I'm not sure why you find those to be blah because on other posts you have said you liked them.

No, they (Party Tyme) are owned by Sybersound Records - their studio is on the west coast in Malibu, CA.

The funny thing to me is, I wouldn't know any of the new songs until they were played at karaoke. I guess I'm getting to that age where I find myself more comfortable with the music of my youth (or before, as I do tend to sing a lot of oldies songs).
I can't wait until I get to the age of the one older lady who comes to karaoke, who sings a ton of Alicia Keys and Adele and the like. She has to be in her late 50s or early 60s, and I've never seen her sing anything prior to, say, a 2006 release date.

That old lady could be me, NoShame, although I don't have the abilities for Adele/Alicia. But I've been listening to the oldies for decades and while I like them, I still try to find something new and fresh to get excited about. So oddly enough, I'm 60 and I may do more of the new songs than the younguns--although I still do the old ones, too.
As for Party Tyme--I'm probably wrong--can't remember who told me that...
As for All Star, I'll use Gangnam Style as an example. It is probably not a song we will be hearing much of in the future. But right now it is hot and it has come in very handy for kama-kazis (one guy I did it too actually went home and learned it and does it now) and people satirizing the dance--so it has added some humor and excitement and revved up people and added energy to the show so it was worth getting. But given that it will probably come and go, should I pay $2/song for it or just be happy with the 44 cent All Star Version?

I ONLY have 1 guy that sings (and he can actually pronounce the words properly and 'sing' it) Gangnam, ONLY if he gets requests for it, he's getting sick of it himself but doesn't like to disappoint a requestor otherwise nowdays when he gets requests, he'll put it at the bottom of the pile and tells me if I get to it, fine, otherwise no worries. I would never had heard anyone sing it if it weren't for him - maybe 2 others did try (not going to say 'sing') it once.

Correct, and printed right on the disc labels. Lon I'm with you in general as far as what songs get sung at the shows. At this point I only buy to fill popular demand, and not just to have the tracks. I was just referring to requested tracks. Leopard, I didn't mean to seem to put words in your mouth. What I actually meant was that since I felt they were lower quality, I would wait, rather than replace. I was not trying to describe your actions at all.

the Digitrax stuff is great, bought a few myself and it is as good as the CB stuff was. Country was never SC's forte'.
oh, and about the list of what to buy, i use Songbookdb and if they look for a song that is not there it gives a place to add their name and e-mail and it gets automatically sent to my business mail. when i get it i can e0-mail them back. the goodwill from the request list can make a huge difference with "if he doesnt have it he will get it" helping bring them back.
