The New Country Music I'm Buying

Post subject:  The New Country Music I'm Buying
My buddy asked me what new country music I plan on buying this month. I did my research, and this is what I'm buying.

First, what I bought last month or so (listed by number of requests):

1) Lee Brice - I Drive Your Truck
2) Blake Shelton - Sure Be Cool If You Did
3) Little Big Town - Tornado
4) Zac Brown Band - Goodbye In Her Eyes
5) Gary Allan - Every Storm Runs Out Of Rain
6) Cruise - Florida Georgia Line
7) The Band Perry - Better Dig Two


Here's what I am buying this month:

1) Lady Antebellum - Downtown
2) Eric Church - Like Jesus Does
3) Jason Aldean - 1994
4) Miranda Lambert - Mama's Broken Heart
5) Darius Rucker - Wagon Wheel (despite the fact that the only Darius Rucker my people tend to sing is "Hootie")

Waiting on:

The Band Perry - Done

Hope this helps anyone trying to figure out what new music to buy ala cart. Also, suggestions for songs I may have missed are welcome!

Have all those songs for a while (except 1994). Looking up the history, Cruise was done once - none of the others were sung one time yet.

Lon, I also used to buy new songs "hoping" someone would sing them. It is nice to say "I've had that for a while", but I find that the reality of new music is most songs purchased from a compilation CDG will not get used. Now, I only buy about 8 songs per month (unless there is a specific request).

No doubt that PHM or All Star etc will put songs out 2-4 months before they become popular. But, I haven't been happy with monthly releases since about 2010. No single monthly release has ever had all of the songs people want all of the time - but it has become increasingly worse over the last year or so.

So those of us who buy ala cart do get our songs a little later, but we do get 'em in time. In business, that's called "Just-In-Time". Just like in the traditional business world, a "Just-In-Time" (or Pull) karaoke supply system makes better financial sense than a "Push" system.

One of two things is true then, your show is not much of a country show, or if it is, it's probably a lot of older country. Does "Before He Cheats" sound familiar?

I'm in a country area but have to tell you that I'm still getting "Before He Cheats," "Here For the Party" and "Picture." Yes. But of yours listed I've had done "Better Dig Two," "Tornado" and "Wagon Wheel."

Wagon Wheel has been on my request list for years (disc show so didn't use KV and couldn't find the more obscure MM or other versions). It is close enough to the Old Crow arrangement to make both the Old Crow and Hootie people happy. It was done right out of the chute and brought down the house.

Newer country does get done more often than old - and Miranda Lambert gets sung alot, just not that song (yet). But we are definitely more a rock/pop/metal based crowd. Before He Cheats gets done on occasion. I don't necessarily buy the new stuff in 'hopes' that someone sings them, but I do like to keep up to date. I only get the All Star new songs (on custom as to not dup any song from PHM if possible) and PHM. So approx 30-45 'new (as in current radio)' songs per month, otherwise it's all 80's-ealry 2000's rock/pop.

Someone once said something about another show - something like "It's always the same people singing the same songs....". Ever since, I have made an effort to encourage people to sing the new stuff.

Examples:

Every time I buy a song that reminds me of someone's voice and genre preference, I post it on my facebook and tag them in it.

If I find a new song that I think a lot of people will sing, I'll post it and let them know they can sing it next time they come in (like Red Solo Cup when it first came out).

Because we don't use slips, sometimes a singer will come on stage and not know what they want to sing (grrrrrr). Quite often, they'll let me pick their song. Most often, it's something new I think they can sing. If they can't sing it, I turn the Virtual DJ siren or backspin on and fade right over to a song I know they can sing. (and quite often, when this scenario happens, next time I see them, they've learned the song).

On slow nights, and being in this little po-dunk town, we have them somewhat often - I'll announce "Practice Night" and a majority of singers will participate and sing songs they've never done before or those they've "been working on".

Keeps the show fresh and I think (probably wrong here) that a lot of the spectators are more interested if the songs they hear are songs they recognize, LIKE, and never heard someone sing before.
