I've been tracking the songs on monthly releases from the major players against what people actually request to sing from the newest songs...
I'm finding that a large percentage of what appears on these monthly releases is neither on the radio nor is requested to be sung at my show. I realize that in a lot of cases it's been a guess by the manufacturer as to what songs to produce and release from upcoming music, but but one or two out of 9 or 12 is a bad ratio.
I'm starting to think its better to see what songs are actually hits in their genre and/or which ones people actually are looking for to be able sing before purchasing them... This would clearly mean individual purchases and less "dead tracks" ...
Any thoughts?

Qualification: I am a relatively new KJ. Only 3 years into the biz.
The only time I did monthly releases was after I did my CAP agreement with Pop Hits Monthly. As a part of that deal I worked out a deal on a 1 year subscription to their monthly releases. I did not renew it when it expired because I never had a request to play a single track from any of the 3 genres. It had nothing to do with quality though. They are good tracks (the ones I listened to) but they are not relevant.
I only buy discs in bulk these days, and have started collecting the Sound Choice 8000 series discs for my own personal library. Otherwise I buy tracks via iCroons.com on demand when they are requested for a show. I do not attempt to predict as I don't believe there is need to do so any longer as a KJ.

i buy individuals as they are requested myself. it does cost more per track, but less per usable track. if a new release from Digitrax is 10 songs for $15.00, thats .67 per track. but if only 3 of those get done it is now $5.00 per usable track. if a new release from Allstar is 9 songs for $18.00, thats $2.00 per track but if even 5 songs get done it is now $3.60 per usable track. a download is ~$1.50 per track, but you only buy what is going to get used because you don't buy until it is actually requested.

I have been doing this for a while now, myself. I see no reason to buy anymore large sets of discs than I already have bought. Purchasing songs as I need them, WHEN I need them is easy, fast, and generates a singer created collection. It's also good for my own personal collection for when I go out and sing at my buddy's show. The quality I am finding from SF, SBI, and Zoom is on par, and sometimes BETTER than Sound Choice. I am a rock singer, and they also put out the tracks I like to sing. I also use DTE and All Star downloads, but I have to say, their quality isn't quite as good.

I'll add to that and say that if you pre purchase cards for all star, you can get the price down to almost $0.50 a track by buying a 60 song card... Which means you can end up with 60 usable for around 32 dollars....

I have already found a few of their songs that were just recycled SGB songs.

I'm sorry, but the majority of new music produced for karaoke is either to difficult to sing by most regular folks, or is just plain crap that NOBODY wants to sing. (Not even the 20 somethings will sing this garbage!)
With the possible exception of new Country Music, I'm for the most part buying individual downloads. Cons: It costs more money doing it this way. Pros: I'll have what my customers want and WILL sing. Plus, I save time and disc space not having to rip songs that NO ONE wants to sing.
