Michael,  Isn't it somewhat obvious how I was brought up..

Present youself as articulately as you can, if somebody with more ability in a respectible area corrects you, say "thank you", and learn from it ?  It's for your own good ?

Take the whole apostrophe thing as an example. I don't just type to say nothing (although many will debate this too) LOL .

ALOT is a performance, alot is a "stage".  We don't present ourselves to others in a totally slovenly manner if that can be avoided !  This doesn't come EASILY to me, it's a necessity in life.

I listened, appreciated the "critique", and I've been trying VERY hard to correct that area.  It's what I feel I'm supposed to do.  It doesn't mean everything is fun and easy.  It's a part of learning and bettering ourselves in life. It's TOUGH

It's ALL a performance when others are at the receiving end !

On big downside for me about karaoke is that these days many people can sing quite well. They actaully practice and learn something that they wouldn't have otherwise. Why is this bad? I spent years practicing hours everyday, trying to find the time and place to not be heard and still manage to get up to three hours a day practice. That in itself was very tough.

These days, you don't have to study music to sing well, I'm a litle jealous. If you just go out a few nights a week for fun, after a few years you might have a marketable voice.

When I first started karaoke, I was very well liked for my voice. I got free drinks just to stay and sing longer. These days guys like me are a dime a dozen. It hurts, I just have to find something else that I'm good at.

Hi Milo

Speaking of practicing, Odie asked me to try this Nat King Cole song....been practicing it for a week now and it still sounds awful--I don't give up easily though.  This might be a subject for the singing forum:  "Songs that you just can't do no matter what!"

planet_bill,    Very good points !

I realize the other side to my own delemma.  Verbally it goes something like this..

"It's your life, so what if some laugh, so what if some think you are an a$$ ? You have a right to enjoy something without being good at it too.. "So what" if they laugh"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now while I recognise this as a valid point, it's NOT easy to apply.  Let's be honest, how many knowingly like to put themselves in a situation where they make a fool of themselves publically ?   How many of you that are old, obese, and realize your flaws would wear the Spandex bikini on the beach ?  Male or Female ?  There are simply some things WE SHOULD do if it makes us feel better about ourselves, but not perform, or display for a huge crowd IMHO..

Start the thread, I'm in.

Oldies and standards are not what I am used to singing but I sound good on some of them. I have plenty to say in that thread.

Do the right thing Jeanne.  Post first,  read later.  That is perfectly acceptable behavior in any thread with my name in the heading  LMAO

LOL   Sorry Chuck.

This is actually your thread.  I'm just a guest.

Let me ask you folks something from a slightly different perspective. MOST of you that have posted in here thus-far HAPPEN to be the excellent singers, musicians etc.

NOW,  although most are at least somewhat modest.. You also have a pretty good idea that you are at least :Good: singers ?  Correct ?

Assuming you knew you were not, WOULD YOU STILL submit your singing to KS ?
While a few of you are saying, "it's just for fun", don't you also honestly take into consideration that fact that you are decent singers ?  I think this also makes a difference ~

i can't grasp ur thinking steven, i'm trying, and ur right, i think it's mostly up bringing.....i can't agree that u have to be a 10 to ever do anything...
if i took up hmmmm, deep sea diving and i was with a bunch that had been doing it for yrs, should i miss all the beauty and fun of doing it?  if i waited 'til i was a pro at it like the rest,  i may never get to do it....i missed out.
same with dancing, i'm not good at it but i sure love doing it, and it's sure no fun doing it at home....if a person loves to dance, sing, whatever, why should being around others that r better hold them back from having fun.....
there r guys and ladies that get up to sing and blow me away, but i don't care, its not a contest, just doing what i love to do, just like they r....all in fun...and sometimes who i think is great others will say i was better...go figure...

at what point should a person get up to sing? should an 8 singer get up? a 7?   where do we/you draw the line?  to me if a 6 is giving his best that's really all he can do....should he be up with the pro singers singing at karaoke? hell yea why not....that's what it's all about....people know who the good singers r and who isn't ....to them anyway....and that's what counts...

you miss out on too many things in life if u wait 'til ur perfect r at ur best at it....and we both know there is always someone better at what we do....depends on where ur at...u might be the best in one club and suck at the next club...depends on the level of talent...
at my best i still fall short of alotta singers, so should i get up to sing? oh yea....

growing up i always knew i could sing better than the average person...that put pressure on me to think if i get up i have to be better, i have to always BE ON...
then i would hear people better then i was singing and the pressure was off...now i didn't have to be so perfect,  people handle pressure differently, i was always pretty good at it...always found a way around it...most times anyway....if u see pro's just goofin' off  say in basketball. they're having fun, the pressure is off, no need to be great... they're not in the lime light...that's karaoke for me...i'm not getting paid, no pressure to be perfect, just having fun...

last week i went to karaoke and they had it set up to where you didn't pick ur song... they picked ur song for you, blind draw....i was thinking omgggggg i'm dead....well i got up, they had picked a song by some woman i had never heard of, a song i had never heard, so i did my best with it, had a blast, made up my own tune to it...loll...yea i missed a lotta words that wouldn't fit,  but it sure was fun...and most people lied and said they loved it....loll...but i had a blast, had i not gotton up and some didn't,  i would have missed out on all the fun...and again that's what it's all about to me now....just fun....

hugggs and kisses...lolll

Yep Billy,  I have to do alot of rethinking.  I agree with ALOT of what you say. I think the bottomline is really "How much fun am I having" living life from the sidelines".

My guess however is open circuit diving, deep sea divers aren't going to want the liability of those of us that are just learning assuming they go as a team, however that's not necessarily true either.. Of course even novices go with the trained divers.
I suppose a true 6 or 7 can also golf with a pro's or semi-pro golfers if socially they get along fine.. It's not always just about the game... It's the social interaction in many cases too... Assuming I was a "6",  I'd likely cave in, and bite the bullet...submit something. Believe me... I'm not even a 6  LOL

I understand what you are saying... I suppose I feel I'm free to do many things, but not to "perform".. Of course this is likely a fallacy.

to me, listening to singers not so good is where alotta the fun is for me...they really have a blast doing it....
yes i think i'm a good singer. would i get up if i wasn't?  no clue....but seeing others doing what they love to do, really puts a smile on my face...good r bad..

when i record its 1 r 2 takes 95% of the time....it's not perfect nor does it need to be...it's all in fun...as it should be....

Yep, when I recorded Mack The Knife, it was one take. No mixing or anything. It was the best I could do at the moment. One thing holding me back now besides lack of time, is making the space to hook up more equipment to my computer. It has to be just right now for me to record.

Mack the knife is still up if you want to hear a half-a$$ attempt by me. I wasn't even standing.

I fogot that it is still under the name "aspires to mediocrity". I tried to find it by searching Chuck2, no go.

here's a big problem i have steven....i have trouble subbing songs because they're not perfect....i have this idea that someone, somewhere is out there with headphones plastered to their head picking out every mistake i make....i'm obsessive about recording over and over and overrrrrr trying to get it perfect and of course it has the opposite effect....i'll make mistakes somewhere else and/or lose whatever emotion i had in the song to begin with....i need to get over that and just sing the best i can, have fun with it and sub the d.amn thing....i don't know why i'm that way, it's the same with other things i do too....this need for perfection, knowing full well it's not going to happen....i miss out on a lot being this way i think....
