1)  Genuinely means they want a Critique
2)  Is prepared to accept well inteded opinions of others without getting defensive
3)  The Critiquing party hasn't lost site of the TRUE purpose and meaning of the

hanks, I hadn't looked at it quite that way. I like to know mainly, a few things to work on. This might not be good enough for a lot of others but I will be sure to maention that if I sub. I will also ask for general help, anyone interested can say so. Hoope fully 2 or three responses will arise and I will be satisfied. Actually, one person offering to help me would be enough for me to appreciate.

Maybe it's just not soaking in, what you said previously. Maybe I should say this, in my case, any help is appreciated. One person with one comment still helps me tremendously. JUst be sure to PM me on the opinions as I might eventuallyprefer this method. Right now any help no matter how it is posted is greatly appreciated by me.

My talking range Chuck,  I think this is a range that requires the LEAST amount of extra effort if I were to try to sing,  Believe it or not,  I don't even know what range that is.  I should sit down with a tape recorder, figure THIS much out, and comparing the pitch of my talking range with piano notes, figure out if I'm Baritone, 2nd Tenor, etc.  I suspect baritone
A tape recorder can help if you can get used to sound of your voice on it and become objective. To record something and then stand back and look at it as a stand alone piece of work rather than something that must be defended and is very personal is what I learned and helped me a great deal.

One approach is to listen to your voice until you are sick of hearing it. It is probably over simplified but it was recomended by a teacher once. This is haw the class learned to listen objectively. There may be a better aproach. This is just my offer.

Talking range isn't always the way to decide your singing range. As men we are exposed to men speaking from the lowest register they can muster. We are encouraged to sound manly. Tossing that aside helps too.

Just submitted what will hopefully be my least favorite sub. I wanted to get something up and this may not be a good idea.

No critique needed. :D

You know, about 20 minutes ago I had this great (all I remember it was something vital that nobody thinks about-type-of-thing) thought for a subject to stick on here (it really was, I just know it) but I can't remember what it was now.  I'll come back later when it hits me

I'd resurrect it.  Doing everything short of singing required  :)

I don't have a lot to offer here, in the way of input, but I really have benefited from everything I've read here so I sure hope this thread keeps going... Thanks Mike!

I have been reading back through this thread Chuck, and what you said here really got my attention!!!  I am so technologically challenged!!! And I don't use the same recording set up as most people here, because I got a Boss 1600 digital recording studio as a gift... It is supposed to be very "User Friendly"... Not this old user!!!... I KNOW that my subs suffer because I'm not using this thing to it's capability... I am barely able to turn it on... I am a reasonably intelligent woman, but not in this area, probably because it requires too much logical thinking...Not my "forte"... But on the other side of the coin,  I honestly like people hearing me sounding like me and still showing appreciation for my voice as it actually is... I'm still aspiring to conquer this MACHINE... Trying to understand the manual and figure what these hundreds of settings mean, and do.......but I'm OK with it as it is too

You know Texas, sometimes I think people make the recording aspect  of it more complicated than it seems to need to be, at least to my thinking. Very few of us here are real experts in this the field of sound recording, although I've been reading up on it and have a book on order too which might help--would be happy to share anything I learn amongst us singers here.

I myself mix my junk for headphones as I believe that's what most people on here listen through anyway (I remember Charmin mentioning that as well somewhere) and while learning quite things along the way since submitting here, I've felt fairly satisifed with how they sound (with a few exceptions) even before learning about compression, amplification, etc.  I've had some positive comments about my latest recordings so hopefully I'm doing something to bring out more quality in them.  Like anything you learn as you go along!

The first few week or so I got involved in recording I was simply singing into the little plastic mic that comes with the computer and having the music backing from from the desktop speakers directly in the mic with the voice, and quite honestly, to me anyway it sounded clearer than some submissions I've heard where people have been using all this fancy-schmancy software and stuff, at least on a primary level.

I used to be very close friends as a teen with a production manager at a radio station; he got me very interested in sound.  I remember his one axiom regarding amplifiers, and in many ways I think it still holds true to people overcomplicating sound reproduction.  I was interested in buying a stereo system and asked him what kind of amplifier I should buy---I was interested in this "hot" looking number with about 35 levers and buttons on it.  He told me to forget that, all I needed was one with a setting for treble, bass and balance and that was it!  Best advice I ever received!

MJK

I'm like Texas,  I know for me specifically if there's one thing I really dislike, it's the slow maneuverability of the two or three button parametric set type buttons that "do all" on some of these digital contraptions and studios.  I hate it on my synth workstations, and dislike it on my sequencers.. I like old fashion "nobs".  Each nob has it's function and if you want to turn something up, you don't have to push two buttons for three seconds each to change mode, and than push button to after releasing button one light up X-3  Y-16 on a grid to speed the tempo up... I HATE that !!    I want older analog technology, I don't like the slowness of the two or three buttons do it all type stuff..

Yes, bring back the dials and slide bars! I've only just begun studying this whole business of recording sound---yet another example of something I took for granted my entire life and assumed was just a matter of plugging a microphone and turning on the tape recorder (that's what we used in my day).  But like anything worth knowing you keep plugging along and picking up information where you can and before you realize it you become rather competent in your own right in these things.

Still, in certain areas, one finds "keeping it simple" is the best line of pursuit---better yet, you just find a "formula" or series of formulae that you pretty much can depend on working for you with any given set of cirumstances or problems facing you.

I have an older Fostex 4 track portable tape player recording unit, and a Tascam 424 MK series.  I like the way I can pan and EQ, trim with all nobs. Is there an affordable hybrid technology CD recorder out there ?  With the ease of nobs to record on CD-R ?

Morgan,  You were absolutely correct..   It's not about learning to sing my favorite songs..  It's about picking songs I can sing, that might be in my range...

Even this,  I'm having a tough time grasping... Dang, have I gotten stubborn in my old age...  I want to sit down, and sing it NOW, and do it perfectly....  So much for the JT stuff  :(   Oh well !

Anyone have any backing tracks to Gregorian chants ?   Something monophonic in the key of G ?

No, but I do have a backing for "Rag Mop" as performed by the Ames Brothers (A-flat however!)--about as close to Gregorian as you will find....

Only difference between my trying to sing, and my baseball ability, is that I haven't knocked out any teeth yet trying to sing.
