What do you do when you have a singer who sings into the mic, but can not be heard because no sound is coming out of their mouth. Their lips are moving, but you wouldn't be able to hear them if you were standing next to them.

I have a new regular who puts songs in all night, but it is a waste of time because he can not be heard. It isn't my system !

He also is an undesirable. I don't think he bathes and always appears to be drunk and on something. He doesn't do anything to merrit kicking him out of the bar, but people don't like him around. I did ban him from singing one night because he told some guy to suck his co__ over the mic. He imediately appoligized to me several times. To his defense a guy in the audience was making fun of him.

Is there anything I can do? I cringe everytime he puts a slip in.

Ok, Ok....I can take a hint....I'll quit trying to sing for you(I try to sing, but the words just don't come)......but I'm not taking a shower.....I have hydrophobia.......problem solved....... :(

Babs...what happened to you getting a compressor for your mic channels? If the guy is singing at all, the compressor should help in correcting the gain structure so you can hear him at the same volume as the mix (in theory).

I remember you were asking about compressors in the tech forum a few months ago. Did you not go through with it? Do you have it dialed in correctly? Does this guy literally just lip sync?

No I haven't gotten the compressor yet. I am spending money on updating songs and song books right now. Plus I have another expensive toy I want first. When I get the compressor I'm sure you guys will be the first to know because I'll need help setting it. I'm hoping my boyfriend has taken the hint that I want it for christmas  :D .

BTW- I don't think even the compressor could help this guy !!!

If he sings and no one can hear him --That might be a Godsend

If he is bothering other patrons mention to the manager and let THEM make the decision to band him or not. - Other wise JUST SKIP HIM IN THE ROTATION a few times so he is only singing once a night   LOL

I wish I could skip him in rotation. I have 2 problems with that. One being he asks me continuously when he is up next and I am always telling him he has to wait his turn. Secondly I have never skipped someone in rotation before I am anal about rotation and being fair. I would feel guilty. Although I have put him at the bottom of the list when I get his slip. Usually I put new people in after 5-6 songs have been sung, then rotate new than old singer.

You know - a bad singer, a screamer, a bad smelling singer may be irritating, but I always allow them to sing. I have weak singers that people can barely hear, but I let them sing. Our bar is a melting pot of different classes of people. I don't believe in treating people differently because they are down on their luck. This is a creature that stands by itself. He truly has no sound coming out of his mouth. Maybe I shouldn't of mentioned he smells and is an undesirable. The main problem is he takes up space in rotation all night without singing.

Seriously, you're venting, because you know there is nothing you can do. Sometimes I sing along to get someone started, then I drop out, and maybe pick them up here or there briefly. People see you are trying to help, and it is not your fault. I've heard some people sing, and wish they had this guys problem...lol.....as far as the hygiene, I've worked with a few people over the years, that could shower vigorously, cake on the deodorant, and 15 minutes later....still smell like some kind of animal...lol....some women dig that sh*t...........continue with what you know is right.....you'll get used to the smell in time.... :)

Hi Johnny

You've been in on a slow night. When I don't have that many singers it isn't a problem. No one is complaining he is taking up space. But when I have 30+
singers, people get irritated when he sings.

I think I'm going to talk to him about the problem that no one can here him first.
Maybe I can get him to make a sound. If that doesn't work I'll explain he needs to be louder or I'll have to limit him to one song a night unless he wants someone to sing with him.

You can't sing on a crowded night, because you don't sing loud enough...lol....that will stand up in court....I assumed you would have already talked to him, before you figured it was a problem......you converse with people so well, you definetly have a talent in handling people.....besides, on a slow night it would be worse, he'd be up 5 or 6 times instead of 2.. LMAO .........forgot to mention on the Halloween post......you looked fantastic in your costume...... :D

Compressor won't help make someone louder.  I think they were thinking maybe it was set too high???

How about saying something a lil embarissing towards the stinky one before he sings.  Just a bit to get your point across that he needs to singer louder.

Something like.....
"And now we have Mr. Smith singing "song X".  I hope her tries to sing louder this time, casue I really would love to hear him sing this one."

Perhaps a couple jabs at him and he will get the hint, but don't make it too obvious.

I would walk up to him and say "Mannnn, I smell something really foul in here! ... Do you? Gotta be from somewhere around here!"

then walk off.

LMAO Stinky came back last night. I think he stole someones bicycle to get to
the bar  LMAO. I spoke to the bar manager and she wanted to get rid of him too. I
was instructed to kick him out if he swore on the mic again. I talked to him about singing louder and not talking over the mic when he wasn't singing. Of course the 1st thing he did was grab the mic and start yelling at the top of his lungs he wasn't aloud to talk on the mic in between songs, GEEEZ. He did sing loud enough so we could hear him, yeah :hi5:  one problem fixed. He kept trying to hug me and obviously me pushing him away wasn't enough, so I told told him he has to stop with the hugging crap. He left after singing 2 songs, so it wasn't to bad.

I guess I was afraid to approach him about singing louder because he is such a loose cannon. I should have just treated him like anyone else and not worried. Now i just have to put up with his stinky annoying ways.

If he grabbed the mic and started trying something, just put your foot down and say that he is banned for one month! If he tries to come in during karaoke hours, he will be summarily sent out the door!

And while you're at it, merely tell him that he has a hygene problem that needs to be addressed. Both you and the bartender have noticed it, and there have been complaints.

:worship: Knightshow - you have bigger balls than me  LMAO

I'm hoping the situation will take care of itself. Most of the guys in the bar want him gone too. It won't be long before he ticks someone off and a battle will ensue. Hopefully the guy will take a hint that he isn't wanted 1st. He sat at the table right in front of the karaoke stage last night with the regulars. It took 5 minutes for everyone to move away from him and he ended sitting by himself. There were people all over the bar except for at that table. Pretty obvious.

Babs, sometimes us hosts can be too nice in trying to keep people happy.  If he is that annoying, dirty, etc to you, then he has to be upsetting to others in your crowd.

Have your owner bar him.  You don't need him driving away business and you don't need to take chances with a "loose cannon."

I'm going to speak to the owner Friday night when he comes in. Unfortunately he usually waits for these time bombs to go off before he does anything. I don't bother him for much, so I'm hoping he will take it seriously.

I hope the bar owner listens to you on this. If he waits till the guy is riled-up, he will have an even bigger mess on his hands.

If he try's to hug you, and you have to do more than say stop, I think that's assault, and the owner should ban him for that alone. You better watch yourself with that guy, don't be fooled by his pitiful nature.....don't think that he couldn't do you harm........be careful, and tread cautiously, Babs.......ps, changing the subject to a less serious matter....If you get a chance Babs, check out my last Halloween sub, and let me know what you think....be honest..... :) ...I owe you one.....jj

Again, it is NOT your job to kick him out for anything, the MOST you can do is ban him from singing on your equipment - it is not your bar, you do not run it.  Sounds they are trying to get you to do a job they are afraid to do themselves.

when it's a personal hygene problem, nobody wants to really be the "bad" guy.

You may be doing him a favor!

I started to add this, but got distracted here at work.

I have a friend of mine, Dan, back in Portland.

He was the same guy you're describing on appearance.

His problem was, he was a "lowly" worker, had very little money, rode a bike, or walked several miles out to the karaoke venue. When he walked into the place, his hair was wet with sweat that wasn't a pleasing aroma, his clothes stank, and frankly, nobody wanted to be around him. I actually felt sorry for him and took him outside for a talk. I asked him about his situation and despite being embarrassed, he told me what was going on.

Three things we discovered right away.

1.) He showered RIGHT before he took off... he just re-sweated due to the exercise.
2.) he was MORTIFIED to realize how bad his sweat was offending people.
3.) he was also quite greatful that someone nicely told him about it.

And I WAS being nice about the whole thing. I compared it to myself... I'm a big, fat guy too! I know ALL too well how personal hygene is perceived by the public, and how bad some big people can smell when their deodorant stops working. It was blowing my mind away that someone would even THINK about going into this venue reeking like that.

Dan and I became fast friends after this. What he did later was to bring a change of clothes, soap, and deodorant in a backpack, and when he walked in, would go straight to the bathroom and do a quick recleanse! Did wonders!! Suddenly other people would hang with him, and he found friends he didn't know. He always thanked me for that...

He applied it to other times he would go out, like interviews and such. he ended up getting a bit better job, which eventually allowed him to save some money to get a car, insurance, etc.

All because someone took the time to tell him about how he was offending those around him, and I could tell he wasn't MEANING to.

Now I'm not saying YOU have to do this Babs... it comes across better when a man talks to a man, and woman to woman. At least in my honest opinion.
