dunno if this has already been stated or not but here in NZ IE7 is now a critical update. What has been happening and I believe its due to a foul up by microsoft is that ya do all your updates (have just done this for a work laptop that was out of date) and it appears that one of the updates has a bug in it which causes IE6 to close. You basically cannot go anywhere or do any surfing, it closes and thats it, it seems to happen predominantly at high usage times but installing IE7 fixes that bug and all is ok again. Cept I dont like the new interface

If MS discovers that you don't have a genuine legal copy of Windows, I think they do stop any further MS product updates on your comp.

that's very true. My friend Ken had that happen to him. He had a pirated copy of xp, with a stolen license... next thing you know, he's getting popups telling him it's an illegal version ,and he MUST buy a license.

He ended up buying a used computer with ME on it. Hates it, but he's legal!

ME? <<shudder>>

I love Win2K but ended up reloading with a legal version of XP. I haven't switched to IE7 yet because all the guys at work did, then immediately had to reimage/uninstall it for some reason. Most of them went back to it but they have not convinced me yet. It will happen, I'm sure. Bunch of freakin' geeks...oh, wait, I am, too...

I NEVER run automatic updates. I want to know what the fudge they are messing with before I click on OK.

As far as hackers, at work we have had Vista for a while now for "mess with it" purposes. It is not loaded on any of our production machines yet, but the hackers have already had their way with it I am sure. Oh, and it sounds like it is going to be decent. Still an MS product (yuck) but decent.

Well, I wanted him to buy win2k, but the guy that was selling had only ME and XP. We literally were buying an old P3, so I told him that XP would be a bit much for it. He's only got 256 mb of ram anyway... ME while sucky, does work for him.

I've been wanting to get that VISTA just to play around with it. I also want to get the Media Center as well...

THere's a guy locally that sells a great souped up version of Linux... I'm DYING to play with some software and see how it works on that machine!

If ONLY I had the time and inclinations, I'd have more PCs than neighbors! LOL!

I wouldnt know much about anything ya see....But Matt you should try "KNOPPIX"

Its a modified version of Linux that runs from CD....No need to install to hard drive....and it comes with lots of tools/software....and if somehow your computer did get a virus/worm/Trojan from the net.....All you have to do is reboot and its all gone.  The CD cannot be written to and anything in memory is wiped out upon reboot, and since the operating system runs from CD then system files cannot be corrupted by virus/worm/or Trojans.  :D

Its really kinda cool I think....But you know me I wouldnt know much  LMAO

Oh and it only cost about $30 ....unless you know where to get it for free  :D

Jesse, that sounds really interesting...

what about importing other things on a cd? Would you need another drive at that point since one is totally dedicated for the OS??

I can't believe this was a free distribution. I am typing right now from a Knoppix box. The GUI is easier to get used to than Vista. It seems to use a RAM drive but it may still be very secure. It found drivers for all of my devices on the fly.

A disk operating system, very cool indeed.

So far the major drawback is that it is a disk OS, meaning it has to read the CD for a lot of the functions it provides. It has Firefox preloaded.

Matt...The Knoppix OS comes with office programs and other programs such as audacity for recording & editing....etc.    If you delete programs you dont think you will use to make room for programs you will use....Then yes import the things you want & burn your own version of Knoppix to CD.....or with dvd I would think you would have alot more room for other stuff if you have a CD/DVD combo drive.  The guy suggest deleting included progs that you dont want & add the progs you do want....Just to keep it small enough to fit on CD since that way it will work on any old pc with a CD rom drive.

The advantage to this is....while traveling you can leave your laptop at home so it dont get damaged or stolen, and as long as you have access to a computer where your going...Then all you need is your modified verson of Knoppix CD....Just put it in any computer with a CD rom drive and your ready to go to work with the programs you work with & even use the internet if the computer has internet access.

The knoppix CD that I have came with the knoppix book I bought, and has programs such as audacity for recording & editing your music files, a bunch of tools & other programs....but yes you can make your own version.  As far as using knoppix in one drive and using another drive for other things...Im sure that would be possible if thats what your asking....I've only got one CD drive so yes I would need another CD drive if i wanted to use other things that is not included on the knoppix CD....or if I wanted to burn a music CD while using knoppix at the same time.

If you make your own version of knoppix & include things you want then there's no need for an extra CD drive unless your needing to use more stuff than what will fit on the CD or DVD...Then yeah you will need a extra CD drive for that other stuff.   In that case I would use a external hard drive or CD drive...CD drive if your going to be burning music or data CD's....etc.

Since Knoppix runs from CD you can leave your original OS in place and use it for what ever when your Not running the knoppix CD.  So you really don't need that extra CD drive if all your wanting to do is burn music or data...etc... Because you can use your original OS and CD drive for that...unless your out of town and the computer your using does not have a CD burner....If thats the case then yes buy that external CD/DVD burner & take your knoppix CD with you and your ready to go to work....Better than having that laptop stolen or lost/damaged while traveling....and if the CD drive gets stolen or lost then atleast its cheaper to replace than a laptop & you will still have your knoppix CD in your pocket. :)

Hope this helps  :D

Yes I did, it was so worth it too. This OS is fully loaded. It will take me a week to get used to the environment. I booted into Knoppix last night and was still using it til about an hour ago.

Another note about using Knoppix, you can save the stuff you're working with to a USB flash drive. You could also write Knoppix to a DVD so to have all of the other programs you want to use all on one disk.

I am still trying to learn how to sign in as an admin to load newer drivers. Just a minor hurdle but at the moment it stumps me.

Added:
It can be downloaded for free under GNU license. Now I want to find a GNU karaoke hosting software that will work in this environment.
