I strongly disagree that a singer that turns KJ is the wrong reason to go in to the karaoke business.    My passion for singing has made me one of the best KJs in this entire area.

My system investment and song investment, my talent for mixing and treating every singer the same regardless of their talent level and my ability to entertain the entire crowd playing continuos, non stop karaoke music without dance/filler music, has propelled my to the top.

It was absolutely the best thing that ever happened to karaoke.    Great singers can become even greater KJ hosts.    It's the passion for karaoke that drives me toward greater success. :worship:

I'm wondering what the question is?  Everyone seems to agree that if there is a rotation of 8, or larger, the KJ should not sing.   In another thread (I forget the subject) many KJ's were "braggin" about the size of their rotations.  So the question would seem to be a moot point.

There's no where I go that doesn't have a rotation of at least 8 singers (sometimes not much more), and there's nothing that annoys me more than the singing KJ.  Oh, I know it's possible that a KJ can get a request to sing, I am too polite to request that they don't.  Sometimes when they say they have been requested to sing, I have attempted, without ever being successful, to identify who made the request!

I've hosted karaoke at company parties (as a guest/employee) and gave up the mic for the rest of the night once I got the ball rolling. The KJ runs the show.  If his/her ego and or some other need are such that he/she feels compelled to sing, so be it. But as the one who runs the show, you can choose to ignore a request.  I'll support the singing KJ when the entire audience rises to their feet and chants for the KJ to sing!

Wonder no more.....

I sing when it is necessary to control the crowd in a manner that I want the flow to go.    But most importantly I sing to keep the non singers happy.    I have a list of around 13 reasons the KJ should sing and be able to sing very well.    I know KJs that can't sing and should never sing.   The crowd knows it too.      NO crowd will stay all night if everyone sucks.     Someone has to inject some level of talent.   If the singers suck who does that leave?   The KJ.   It doesn't matter if you don't like it when the KJ sings.

WE have reasons to sing that go beyond  just keeping the singers happy.    My obligation is to the bar owner first and foremost.   That obligation to me, means that I will do everything in my power to make the most money I can for the bar owner.   That means keeping everyone there happy.  The non singers out number the singers always.   The singers entertain themselves.   So who entertains the non singers that are spending proportionally more money than the singers.    Remember that bar has to make a profit or nobody will be singing.   The KJ has to be the judge of how things are going with the non singers.   If I see the natives getting restless I make musical changes.      Most of the time I sing upbeat rock songs.   Strictly for the entertainment of the non singers.

Unless your singing is so wonderful that people are throwing money at the owner of the bar.    Don't complain unless the KJ is singing more than you.      Buy your food & drinks and support the bar owner and the entertainment.   The KJ has a legitimate job to do, so don't try to out think the professional KJ.    He's working for the best interest of you and the bar owner.     This also includes running a fair rotation.

GOHLEE GEE BigDog, I didn't know that a KJ singing once, every 1 - 1 1/2 hours, could make such a big difference on an owner's bottom line?   Or perhaps you're singing every other song and paying to do so?

With the size crowds you garner, where do you find the time or space in the rotation to flex your vocal chords without ignoring your signing patrons.  RULE 1 OF KARAOKE: The singers know the rotation and know what's fair.  Singing KJ's, especially on a BZ nite is not fair!!!!!!

I used to sing at the beginning of every round to signal the beginning of the round. Occasionally I would drop out if there were too many singers, but our rounds got so big that the only way you could tell we were back at the top was to come up to the booth and look on the whiteboard or wait until the KJ sings. I am talking a round of 50 people or so; I haven't seen crowds that big in years.

I don't think the KJ needs to be able to "sing" as much as to "sell a song"--the KJ's talent should be entertaining the crowd, not necessarily being  a great singer. I enjoy listening to someone enjoying themselves.

Anyone who feels they need to be able to sing but can't--try finding a "fun" song and making it yours. That is something I recommend for everyone anyhow. Mine is Brand New Key, and Rich does Mississippi Squirrel Revival, which is ALWAYS a crowd-pleaser.

Gigi, let me see if I got this straight.  The ONLY reason you sing at the top of the rotation, especially when it gets really busy, is to signal to the audience that the top of the rotation has arrived?  Have you ever tried makin' an announcement to that effect?

There are plenty of great singing KJ's I know.  I don't go to a show to here them sing!

I have sung to control the mood of the night before. I agree with that. I too think there are reasons a karaoke host needs to sing, but for me most of the time on a busy night there is no reason for me to sing.

My singers out way the nonsingers by far almost every night. I worry about everyone being entertained. If my singers are having fun the nonsingers will too.  You have said before you only attract the serious karaoke crowd. I would think you have many talented singers and don't have to worry about entertaining your nonsingers with talent. I also think your singing crowd is small enough you can probably sing without upsetting anyone.

Ericlater - < what does your name mean?  LMAO
I totally get your point. It can be frustrating to see a karaoke host singing a lot when you are sitting there waiting 2 hours for your turn or even an hour, but I don't think it is fair to say a karaoke host should never sing. Do you regular a place that the KJ abuses his rotation? and has a big crowd?

I was taught way back when to start out the beginning of each round, I quit doing that when I realized I was taking a spot from someone that was a paying customer & waiting their turn.  So I no longer sing in the rotation.  I will open the show - mainly to make sure everything is adjusted correctly & then I am done.  Only exceptions is slow to no singers - slow being under 5, a request - and for those who want to know, come ask I will show you who requested, or a duet request.   On weeknights I average anywhere from 10-20 singers, on weekends I average anywhere from 20-40 singers.  Last Sat I had 45.
Now I signal the beginning of the next round by simply stating - "OK, we are now beginning the next round!"
