I think my post got lost in all the chatter.  Morgan (how's Mordrid by the way) do you need to see the lyrics screen, if so how many screens are you using one or two.   Writing a compressor is out of the quick-and-dirty (developers phrase meaning it can't be done quickly) question but I could allow you to pre-set the output volume.  I could also make it start and stop from a foot switch if you or hubby can solder.

Spacebar is fine.  Do you need a lyrics screen?  Do you need two lyrics screens?  It could also just wait so many seconds between songs.

Weedy my wish list is pretty simple really I would be happy with a prog similar to sax n dottys but that stepped down to the next song after the current one was finished, and either started automatically or used the space bar as a trigger so as it was a simple process. I am a singer using cdg as backing on laptop. to take my eyes off front of house in my opinion is rude, I should be interacting with the crowd

So thats it really, I just wanna load and play...I like the idea of a zip player oh and a compressor/normalise function would be cool so as I dont have to keep tweaking volume :)
Thank you for asking me btw.
I just use winamp (ver 2.8), and it has all my karaoke needs. With Pacemaker, and playing on auto, goes from one song to the next. If I'm so impatient I can't wait for the five seconds before the song starts, I just manually click it with the mouse.

Sax n Dottys used to make a .zip player that resembles a "host"er type of program... I think they abandoned it for their show presenter. I never liked it, and prefered to keep my karaoke files UNZIPPED... sometimes the compression method interfers with the .cdg files, so to me, it worked out fine to unzip it.

However, I know that Hoster (MTU) has no troubles, nor does the S&D Show Presenter with .zip files, so what do I know! LOL!

If you're interested, I may have that .zip player... I'll look at my archive files when I get a chance. Email me if you're interested.

Here is a link to the ZIP PLAYER....

you will need winamp with the mp3+G plugin istalled to use it.

I have the player Matt, I was simply expressing a wish for the player or something similar to be created that would play continuously  (like roxbox does but no need of two players) or alternatively if not playing continuously at least step down to the next track and be started by the space bar

Thanks very much Twansenne but have used this for (just trying to think) at least 4 years I think

I know it is a pain in the butt, but you could do this easily with what you have.  You would have to UNZIP your songs, and then que the songs into WINAMP thus creating a play list.  THen it will play one song after another.  OR you could set up a HOT KEY and the PLAY LIST PREFERENCES so it will manulay advance to the next song only after the hotkey is pressed.

As for removing the "dead air" at the beginning and end of a song, the only thing I can think is to edit the mp3 and cdg files to remove the "dead air".  I know of no simple fix for that.

Maybe I'm a little confused but isn't it still illegal to transfer media? It still is here!

yeah it is kind of a pain lol. although I have my songs in "rough" playlists, I like to be able to pluck a new song or songs when necessary if my reading of a crowd demands it.
An example of this was playing at a dine and dance before Xmas to over 360 people. we were looking at a really mixed bag of people from white collar to blue collar. We did the first 3 hours before the 2nd band came on. How often would one dine to a mix of jazz & pink floyd? But because I was reading the crowd and mixing it up as I went it worked fantastically, to the point that the hotel got comments that it was a shame to have changed the band.
its the ability to think on the fly that prevents me from just using winamp, I do a search for a song name and it is far easier to right click and load that zip into a playlist already playing than to have to highlight two files (cdg and mp3) to do the same...remember I usually have a mic in hand and am singing at the time.
