its the ability to think on the fly that prevents me from just using winamp, I do a search for a song name and it is far easier to right click and load that zip into a playlist already playing than to have to highlight two files (cdg and mp3) to do the same...remember I usually have a mic in hand and am singing at the time.

It is possible even to do that in winamp, using the winamp library, but again all your files will have to be unzipped.  I have over 15,000 songs in the wimap library on my gig computer and the search is very easy and fast.
Again, a pain to unzip them, but I think it will do what you want.

When refering to Hoster people are talking about MTU's karaoke show hosting program.  It is a program that Pro KJs (and non-pros) use to run thier shows via a laptop.  There are other hosting programs out there including Sax & Dotty's Show Presenter and Digital Entertainer, RoxBox, Sack O Nuts, ect....

There is a plugin for unzipping the zips inside winamp.  comes with autokdj.

I don't know anything about USB sound cards so, No, I won't.  A hosting program automates many of the functions of a  professional KJ, such as keeping track of singer rotation, kamikazi, some print books, some show video, singer historys, singer Avatars, song search engines, kiosks, junk like that and they play the songs too.

Morgan:  Keep the faith, I'm working on it.

I use MTU Hoster because it's suite of Keyrite, Microstudio, KHP, and Hoster are the most reliable thing I have found. Also because it is the first program I found when I specifically looked for software that could burn a key-changed track to a CDG disk.

I use Hoster for my amateur shows, but it doesn't allow much control for practice. t (One of my pet  peeves, inability to change key on a song on the list, has been fixed in the latest.) If you had auto-rotation and ability to start/fade in the middle, I would consider it as the best thing around with no close second.

For new songs and songs not in the MTU library I use Winamp and some custom Perl scripts I have written that will find songs and play them from the command line (i.e. getsong strait she at cmd prompt). Also my scripts find and play songs I have downloaded from CAVS but haven't imported to Hoster yet, and old versions I hate and have removed from Hoster.

I also have a prototype system which is network-based and will allow singers to come to the KJ site over the web or a wireless laptop in the show room. They can log in and see which songs (with which key changes) they did at each past show, and of course check boxes and drag and drop to set their song list for the night. The KJ has complete control to set the rotation, which is automatically established by one of two algorithms (new singer at end of roto, new singer before current singer).

Both of the above things are of course based on Winamp and MP3+G plugin, but I find that quite unreliable for show use. I know a lot of people put on a good show with it, but even the best KJs I know have occasional Winamp hiccups. MTU Hoster never has them if the machine is stable (in my experience).

Is there still a demo version still available somewhere?

many of the more DJ oriented software karaoke players have a feature called auto-cue which cues the next song to the first sound in the track... this gets rid of the dead air at the beginning of songs and bypasses the song manufacturers logo splash screen at the beginning....

And it can be used to pick up the tempo and hurray the singers up to the stage esp in the last hour...

The best benefit is at the end of the song for auto fade... There is no gap and since we use auto duck on the announce mic the delay is determined by the amount of time the mic is on...

I have to TOTALY disagree with that one.  After I got winamp and Sax&Dotty's installed, I never had any problems with Winamp. And that is with almost 3 years of use for KJing and DJing.

Now if I were one of thoes KJs/DJs that don't have a decitated PC for running shows, and was letting the kids use it for home work, browsing the internet, checking accounts program, ect....  I probably would have problems.  But my gig PC is just for that, and nothing else.
