Even AI is a joke in the picking of the winners, I don't know if they changed it or not, but they used to say call in as many times as you want to vote for your favorite Idol.

Sorry, some of you guys may have worked out
I have a problem with the media.
Contests are just a small part of that.
They manipulate anything they choose.

The place my wife and I go to had one of these singing competitions.  We mised a week  here and there but all the ones we thought were the best, and my wife is a very good singer-they all lost, so no, don't for them.

If contests are so terrible, WHY do people keep flocking to them & entering them?

Often so they can complain. Everyone likes to be a critic.
I know you fully understand.

Problem with that is people are only human & have likes & dislikes - even so called impartial judges - not only in karaoke, but in many type of judged situations.  So someone sings a song that the judges don't like for some reason, it will affect the outcome as they may automatically judge it lower.  Different judges will hear different things & even though it's not supposed to be based on personal likes/dislikes - you HAVE to take it into consideration.

I still stand by what I said

Quote:
I have never ever seen a 100% fair contest.
What I have seen are contests judged by people not proficient enough to judge them.

Ah yes, & I still stand by that, but not only for karaoke but ANY judged situation.  Dog shows, beauty contests, anything that can be judged by a handful - the Iron Chef on Food Network.  The whole deal is TRY to get judges that at least have some kind of background in the field they are judging.  I wouldn't put judges who only eat fast food in the seat of the Iron Chef positions, nor would I have a judge that knows nothing about animals judging a dog show.  Same with our karaoke judges, they need to at least have SOME kind of musical background & no association with our club or contestants - does it necessarily make them more qualified, who knows, but they are no more qualified than ANY judge - it's all human response & opinion - even on the bench of a court of law, some judges rule on one thing while another judge on the same case may see it different & rule the opposite way - happens every day.
The question was CAN a contest be fair - yes it can be run fair.  I'm sure there may be some rigged contests (not just karaoke) out there which give ALL contests a bad rap.  But even in the fairest contest, the people who didn't win aren't going to think it's fair if they think in their own head that they should have won - especially if they were CLOSE to the money/prize.
Again, if people think a contest is going to be rigged, then they should not enter to begin with - which is why I still get baffled as to why contests are still so popular.  The other part of human nature, people like to compete!

This subject irritates me to no end.  I have been in and worked contest for over 20 years now and have yet to hear someone not complain about the results but most of the time "it wasnt fair" was incorrectly used. Bottom line is that most of the time the issue is with the egotistical singer that is in the contest that cant except anything but winning. I believe a contest is fair when each contestant FULLY UNDERSTANDS what each judge is looking for and that their decisions are subjective based on their perception of what is good. Can contest be harmful to the Karaoke business? Yes, because the egotistical singer I mentioned takes it personal and wants to blame someone for their failure to finish first. No way someone might have been actually better that night it had to be someone elses fault "It wasnt fair"! I tell everyone that enters DO NOT GET IN IF YOU CANT ACCEPT THE JUDGES RESULTS! Everyone that enters a contest believe they are the best, and they should, and hear what you tell them before they enter but are really not listening. Determining what is a fair contest is like judging one "ITS THE PERCEPTION OF THAT INDIVIDUAL". Lonman is exactly right "contest are very popular" and the reason is because people are competitive by nature and if it is put on right (meaning lights, video, sound) the non singers find it very entertaining. An educated singer is your best customer find out what the contest is all about before you enter and that it meets your specifications. If you know that for any reason you cant except the judges decision it is the singers personal responsibility not to enter and if you do, be an adult and handle the decision gracefully. We act like a Karaoke contest is unlike no other. Contest being judged by human beings has been going on for hundreds of years example: American Idol, Beauty pagents, figure skating ..............     the list could go on forever. Point is if you are going to enter be ready to except the results.

OK, now for my  :2cents: .  I don't believe that any event that does not have established criteria for judging/winning can be fair.

I was an announcer for our state's American Quarter Horse Association for over 2 years (lack of compensation was the only reason I stopped) and had a chance to witness and discuss judging with all of the judges for the shows.  They had an established set of criteria that the participants knew in advance and were able to train to.  They also used no local judges.  Judges were paid a fair fee as well as travel expenses.  Was there ever any disagreement with the judge's decisions?  Yes. However, it was recognized that judges, being human, concentrate on the area(s) in which they are most familiar.  All participants knew the judge's background and where they might concentrate in advance.  We only had 6 shows/events (2 per region) per year and the judges were known up to a year in advance.  Judges are also graded on their judging with the national association responsible for establishing a program for training and evaluating judges.

To put this into context I don't believe most karaoke contests can be 'fair' as there is no established criteria posted in advance, no oversight of judging performance, no accountability of judges and no training of judges.  My experience with karaoke contests is that the judges at many events have already heard many of the 'contestants' and tend to be forgiving of any errors made during the contest if they have heard the contestant do better on a different night.  A courtesy they don't offer to the 'unknowns'.  Also, contestants have no idea of what a judge may be looking for; i.e., stage presence, vocal quality, being in tune, closeness to original recording (regardless of the backing track available from the KJ), originality, etc.

As a singer, I will never attend a venue where a contest is being conducted, regardless of whether it is a regular location for me or not.  Contests preclude non-contestants from singing at any time during the contest and mean less time for 'recreational' singers due to the fact that, when the contest is over, the KJ normally starts the rotation from scratch as if it was a totally new night and includes contestants as 'new' singers.  This usually means you get to sing one song, if any, for the whole night as a non-contestant.

Flame on!
