Some people think that, much like a radio station, you should only hear a song once in the whole 3-5 hours that the show is going on.  Some people believe that a singer should be entitled to sing whatever s/he wants...  regardless of whether it's been done already and/or if s/he does it better or worse.

What do you think?

As a rule I generally deny repeat requests.  Exceptions may be if it was done very early on & the repeat is later in the evening & the original singer is no longer in the building.

the only time I've ever let a repeat happen... was when a buddy of mine was singing Shania Twain's "Honey I'm Home"... aka like a male chauvinest pig... and some gal came up and wanted to sing it the way it was SUPPOSED to be done!

I work with exactly like Lonman has said.  If it's done early in the night...then possible again if the other singer is gone and/or there is a whole new crowd.  I simply say..that's already been sung xx mins ago.  That usually does the trick and they pick out something else.  The place were I started allows repeats and that is one of the things that ticked me off when I was just a singer, so as a general rule I try to steer away from that......MrD

No repeats. But that isn't the case at some of our venues. One woman put in "Before He Cheats" and was told that the singer immediately prior to her had put in the same song. Her response was, "So?"

I allow repeat songs but not in the same rotation - I generally explain to the singer that so and so JUST sang that song and if they could put another sing in and they can sing THAT song a little later in the night.

exception:  ON more than one occasion after hearing a not so good rendition of a song I would have someone RUN up and say .. That - I CAN DO THAT BETTER let me sing THAT song.  .....  That I NEVER let happen !!!!

After 2 rotations if the singer only has 1 request in. This is another reason I like singers to turn in several requests. I can eliminate repeats if it might be a problem. Then I leave it up to the singers.

As a singer if I know somebody is going to sing a song I have 200 others I can do. Once in a blue moon I might ask somebody if I can sing it too. We have never had a problem with it not for at least 2 or 3 years..

Edit:  One time we went to a new show and somebody clobbered a song and immediately the KJ sang it again. I went up called him an &aahole complained to the MGR and we left. That is one big NONO with me.

Some very popular songs get sang 3 or 4 times in a night. Those are mostly dance songs and people do dance to those songs.

I will never sing a song if I know that it had already been sang earlier on.

Then you get the complaint if they give you multiple songs & someone else sings a song that the first person has in their stack, not even the song they had on top (usually they give me multiples in the order they would like) - Hey I already had that song up.  Well, no you had this up with the intention of singing this song later, just because you put it in a big stack does not ensure you are necessarily going to have that song for the night.  i'm not going to go looking through everyones stack for a repeat song, it's whatever is on top.
I hate the kj that tries to show people up as well.

Our slips are standard on front and have 4 lines on back for 4 more songs. That means 1 slip for each singer and after the first song the slips are turned over..  Most dont care what order we choose or have the option of changing songs on the fly. If they want to add a new song it is oral and done in 2 seconds without a slip.

A few want to come up and chat and just ask for a song which is qued in seconds. If we are not busy we even search the data base for certain artists etc. It actually irritates us a bit when singers are so used to only one song per slip and turn in a bunch of slips. Although our singers have all 3 options.

It took several weeks and work but I finally started using the computer for tracking rotation and not slips laying on the table. . One of the reasons I am considering compuhost is it handles multiple requests and we would have very few slips on the table and if somebody turned in a slip it would be easy to spot.

I know it is a concept that is hard to understand when you have used slips for years LOL It is so much easier....

I usually tell the person when they hand in the slip that someone has already sung it. If they still want to sing it we can do it later in the night.

Most singers will not want to do a song someone else has done, so it takes care of itself. It is rare that they'll want to sing it later, but if they do I don't mind.

Once in a while when I am busy I don't think to read what songs are written down on every slip when they hand them in. If a song is sung someone else turned in for later the singer will catch it and bring me another slip before their turn. I try not to let this happen, but I'm human. People are pretty cool about it.

That's when a KJ worth his or her salt can say back something along the lines of "this isn't a competition, and the rest of us don't want to hear the same song twice, nor do we want to get into who is better. Pick another song. I'm sorry, but it's a popular song. Someone else already put in their request for it. Don't agree with this, then there's the door!"

"So?" What are you, a child? That's what I'd WANT to say!

I swear, I never seen so many adults act so childish... having alcohol be a factor certainly doesn't help matters.

Thanks all!

I'm really glad to hear I'm really not off base completely.  This has recently become an issue because the bartender where I have been working for 3 years took it upon himself to DEMAND that I change my policies so he could get a better tip from a patron at the bar.

Now we have a real problem..You need to have a business meeting with owner and staff...This does not go...In any way shape or form... I would never let anybody prostitute my business. I would be in his face NOW!!!

When "Before He Cheats" came out initially, I literally had women fighting over who would get to sing it - I would reply "twice a night max, ladies" - whoever got there first would sing it the first time; then the second singer would have to hang around til much closer to quitting time if they wanted to sing it that bad. People got SO sick of that song. Thankfully most have forgotten about it.  :)

All the way!  No matter your policy on anything, they are YOUR policies & a bartender can not force you to change them - especially after 3 years.  Talk to the owner/manager.

As a singer, I don't care if the person after me sings the song I just sang....pretty sure after about 3 or 4 singers, most people in the bar wouldn't even notice... LOL ...I don't own it....as a KJ, I usually would not allow it, especially with the first singer still around.....bona patato..... :)

As a singer, I usually will not sing a song if somebody has already sung it that night.  If I have a slip in already with a song that is sung by another singer, I will give the KJ another song choice.

However, occasionally I will sing a song that has been sung already (very rare).  This happened a couple of weeks ago when I was requested to sing a particular song.  I told the requester that it had already been sung earlier in the night, before they arrived, but would ask the KJ.   I did that and also  approached the other singer to get their OK for me to repeat the song they had sung.   It is for this kind of reason that I voted for "Allow repeats".... but the KJ should have the last say.

When you ask the other singer, any normal person is going to say he/she doesn't care....even if it really does bother them
