Dang.  I'm desparate to get back out there.  Would an old fart in his 50's look out've place playing in a band with teenage kids ?  I can't find any other old farts around here that want to leave their couch long enough to even tune a guitar anymore.  I'm going to have to be willing to travel a ways to hit the blues areas.

I don't know about what you'd look like with a bunch of teenagers. I am the oldest in the band I'm in, I think the youngest must be around forty though. We do draw a wide age range of people though. I'd say all the way from 21 to um....well...perhaps my age or more. My mother is 77 years old now, and if I don't take her to at least one show a year she gives me all kinds of grief. I don't know if I look my age or not, I still haven't gone grey(well maybe the mustache) and I still have most my hair which is pretty long. I don't think you're ever to old to rock if it's in your blood. I must admit I've been saying "this is the last year" for about the last five years now, but the offers come in and I end up saying "well, maybe just one more year then" and yes, you guessed it, I've already agreed to some 2008 dates.

Nope,  I never would've thought I'd be as into classic rock now at early 50's as I was when I was playing the same rock at 15.  No aspect of my preference in style has changed..  I'm just that stagnant  :worship:

Ultimately if you like to play you will play. There was a period about 15 years ago when I lost all interest in playing, I'd already been playing out for about 20 years at that point. It lasted about 2 years, I had no desire what so ever in picking up a guitar or turning on a keyboard. I remember getting phone calls from other groups and people , you know the ones that say something like, come on over and jam, lets see what happens. No, I just didn't feel like it. I don't know why I felt that way, but I did. Then after a couple of years I woke up one day and thought maybe I'd see about putting a band together. Well, I did and have been playing out again for about the last 15 years. To me having a good band starts with chemistry even above talent. If you find the right people to work with it can still be fun.

Yep,  For me it must "click", music IS a team effort for me.  I'm not a solo musician, I don't wish to be a solo musician (although I did lounge piano) and LONG ago classical.. I didn't enjoy it..  I like interactive music that "clicks". While I can be, and have the ability in certain areas to be "a leader" type,  It's not my comfort area in music.  I'd rather take back seat for an oppt to play with better musicians than myself. I'd rather follow.

Ron Wood has an autobiography due out VERY soon.   This sounds like a MUST read !    Talks about how Keith Richard pulled a gun on him, and other stuff..  A lot of dirt during the classic genre.

If Keith Richard managed to pull a gun, it would have needed explicit directions written on it and of course someone else would have had to load it. LOL

Well, not necessarily.  Keef thought he was handing Ron a pen.

A lot of mixed feelings here in CT regarding concert ticket scalping now being allowable again.  Bruce Springsteen concert kicked off world tour here in Hartford, and this is the first day ticket scalping is once again state permitted as long as it's not within 150 feet of the performance venue. Still, many don't like the new law as it exists.

Note to self....Do not buy tickets in CT. Why would they make scalping legal again? I don't see how anything good can come from that. Did they try and explain their logic? We already have middle men getting a cut just from selling tickets and driving up prices.

My comment about Keith comes from the rumors I used to hear about him having several guitars at hand, most of them tuned in a non traditional manor so he could make some of his one of a kind voicings. Have you ever heard that? I've never been a big Stones fan so I've never really tried to figure out any of the chordings. I do have a friend that is an excellent guitar player, and he told me that most of the chords can't be duplicated with a guitar tuned in a traditional manor.

Well,  It's my understanding that Keef took "Open G" tuning from Ry Cooder for slide technique and heavily used it for awhile.  That aside I'm not sure he doesn't use traditional tunings.  When I've watched his concerts (to try to clone a few riffs) he was in traditional guitar tuning. Not sure what he prefers or does more  of however, but he liked open G tuning, and played with open tunings..

IMHO Keef is the Rolling Stones.  He composed the bulk of the material, and is the bands "sound" aside from Mick Jagger who's the lead singer. But Keef pretty much is the sound of the stones.. Many will disagree.. But put Keef, and Ron Wood together and you have an AMAZING guitar duo IMHO..  I am a big stone fans however I don't idolize them, I play them instead :)

I loved the older ballads, and just was wild about Ruby Tuesday, Wild Horses, and Angie..  Very little brought me as much pleasure for awhile as attempting to clone stones musicianship..  It's just a thrill even still for me..

Not sure what the mentality behind scalping being permissible once again is here in CT..  Yet I'm not sure what the mentality is behind CT in general LMAO

Well you got my curiosity up so I did some googling. It says he used a modified open G tuning on a lot of tunes, like "Start Me Up'. He actually removed the Low E and then tunes the remaining strings from the what used to be High E to G D G B D, now that is just weird to me. I wonder if he was looking for a sound or just couldn't play guitar the right way.

Thought.....If a corn muffin falls off my kitchen counter, is that a justifiable reason to raise gas prices?

That's a G major triad with the root and 5th doubled.

First position G triad  G-B-D... and he gets quite a strong quality be doubling the tonic and 5th in the bass.  I'd never have thought of removing the bass string tho.. obviously what he does works for that material tho LOL

On the slower ballads go back to the 60's (flowers album days), and a few of the early 70's comps he had to be using standard tuning tho.. Assuming there was an easier way of getting results we guitarists would've figured it out.. He had skills in standard tuning as well... There's no shortcuts to stuff like Angie (which although not hard) indicates that he's aware of passing tones, and chordal comp

I think a very large can of worms has been opened. You really got me thinking about the alternative tuning thing. A lot more people than I thought do it from time to time. It's no wonder some tunes are harder to figure out than others. Try googling "Alternative Guitar Tuning" and "Keith Richard Guitar Tuning". There is quite a collection of information out there. Perhaps I shall do some experimenting of my own.

(flowers album days)

Oh, now you've done it, I seen that and I had to dig up some old Iron Butterfly, If you have it grab the Iron Butterfly Ball album and give " In the time of our lives" a listen, obviously more Psychedelic than flower, but what a great tune. Another one I was listening to the other day was the song "Monster" off from the Steppenwolf Monster album. That tune is still appropriate after all these years. Maybe even more so.

Steven, dang it all. I was going to find something and post the link here for you.... from YouTube.... but these crazy restrictions we have at work- I can't access YouTube either.

But I'll go get my laptop, I happen to have it in my truck today, and I'll go online with it and see if I can find the right video.

There's a video (i don't think i've seen it posted here anywhere, forgive me if it has been and i'm bringing up an old story)... but there's a guy sitting playing guitar, then his buddy walks over and starts playing bass on the same guitar as he's playing the lead. It's one of the coolest things I've ever seen. And they're pretty good.

You ever seen that video? I don't know the name of it, my son Harley showed it to me a few weeks ago.

BRB.... going to get the laptop.
(answer the phone if it rings while I'm out, okay?)  :D

Eric Clapton is being interviewed on Larry King's CNN show tonight, Friday 9:00PM ET. Could be pretty good.

There is a band from the Dallas area named Needfire. They do something called Celtic Rock. Some may say that it sounds like two angry cats in a pillow case but I'm liking them.

You can hear some clips at the following link, Needfire Link.

I can hear a few mistakes here and there in their music but I think if they work at it they might have a future.
