I'm having a brutal time. Since I need some boost to my voice I went thru my PA on this, and I'm mic'ing the PA straight into my system with only PA reverb, no other FX... Problem is, I think I have "Blending" disease. I seem unable to come out in front of any mix since I spent my whole life being BEHIND the front singer, and just accompanying the front person.. This is another attempt at Oh Holy Night and if you can in your head EQ me in somehow, let me know roughly what I need to do before I really try to blow my voice in front of the mix and make a total goofball of myself... Between my vocal timbre which is soft, lack of singing power, and just not KNOWING how to cut thru backing (since I've always been behind the front musician) I'm having on tough time with this.... Dang...
this is thru the PA, and I'm trying to work out my dynamics but what I'm noticing is that working dynamics doesn't in this case mean "blending" with instruments... It means the voice must upstage the backing.. Why is this so tough ??

Kappy- I still can't get any of your songs to play- everything comes up and I can see the "listen" icon on your profile- but nothing happens when I click it. I'm honestly trying to help- but can't hear it to offer any advice. Post as "L" on ss then those of us who are commenting to you in this thread will be the only ones who will be able to do so. No one else will be able to say anything, How bout that?

Getting depth to my voice, and resonance is no easy task considering I have a very breathy hollow voice. What I'm doing is attempting to mimic traditional liturgical choir vocalists (and since I don't know how to sing and project it's crazy to attempt but I suppose I'm in the mood to try the impossible)

http://www.ksolo.com/actions/showUserPr ... 98#nothing
do you need to assign the songs numbers? why is that #nothing coming up at the end?
I'm telling you- just sub the darn thing as a listen only on the SS-do you think they are wild beasts that are going to tear you limb from limb or something?( wink) I promise you I'll protect you! Don't be such a puss : : No more excuses...SUB SUB SUB!!!

Steven what little I can hear sounds in tune but that is all I can say at present because that is the most hideous backing. that stupid clanking melody line where your voice should be and the strings overpower you.
No doubt you know this.
ok that last note was a bit shakey and sometimes it shook onto the note and sometimes it shook off it.

I'll have nothing to do with the showcase. I can't figure out why it doesn't work for you, Unless your firewall is blocking something from that site

then why not just record the damn thing at home instead of online and send it to paula or those you trust and let them critique it privately
cos you are not doing yourself any favours at all using that crappy site

they say audacity is simpler, I am used to cep (audition) becos its what I have used in the various radio stations I have worked for
you dont need to use the bells and whistles in fact I have a basic how to tutorial if you want it. Something I put together for others in your position that just deals with setup and how to do a basic recording.

Jian,
I think headphones will help with this type situation. What happening is I'm getting the computer speakers going thru the PA as well, and since I have the treble setting up and reverb, the higher pitches are bleeding back.. If I cut the computer speakers out, go into the PA and just amplify the vocals back to the computer it'll be easier to tweak the vocal vs backing separation

Yes it was.. I tried to go from real voice to falsetto while exhaling that note, and I really botched it LOL. I made quite a few mistakes. I also had NO vibrato control during that song, There was just too much I was trying hard to do simultaneously and I felt overwhelmed
Thank you
Paula,
Even on the page that came up. If you click on the yellow speaker icon in the box that "Holy Night" is in, the song will play.

It wasn't a lack of support- it was indecision about HOW to support it you heard. I have more power with chest- but then the rest of the phrase sounds "off" in chest and wierd if I suddenly chest a power note like that then switch to head. Any suggestions how to treat it? Ok...went back and listened to this section a few times. Fall is only half a step lower than the previous note. It should definitely be a mix and placed pretty much the same way. Try to keep the same feeling on fall physically as you have on morn. There shouldn't be much difference in how those two notes are sung. Quote: I am SO NOT comfortable with those transitions and I was tightening up those last notes because they are getting up there for me...so whith them it's a matter of just getting them out period( sigh) and not any flexibility about "how" ...I was just glad I did'nt crack- I felt like I was going to the entire phrase. One thing about high notes - so much of being able to hit them - or not hit them - is mental. My first voice teacher was curious about just HOW high I could sing, so, without telling me what he was doing one day, he just ran scales...and kept running them. He finally stopped after I was within 4 keys of the end of the piano keyboard. On occasion, for sh*ts and giggles, I'll have my accomapnist just keep going until I choke or we run out of keys which ever comes first. If I look at the keyboard and see WHERE it is, I psych myself out, tighten up and can't do it. If I keep my back to the piano, have no clue where I am and just DO it, the notes are there. The trick really is not to think about it and just DO it. Quote: Maybe what Murl and Kappy were saying IS the problem....the arrangement is just so different from what anyone would expect...and no one could deny it's an "over the top' chart. So maybe the culprit was in the unorthodox track.
Yeah...after reading what Murl and Kappy said, it made a little more sense to me. It's a song most people are used to hearing a certain way, so when a completely different version is presented, I think it affects how they hear it. I had never heard the arrangement, but I am familiar with Sandi Patti, so when I found out it was her arrangement, the vocal gymnastics didn't seem out of place or all that unusual to me.

Billy, I left a comment in SS. Not an actual Critique. The past few songs of yours have been tough for me to actually Critique given your ability level in the song genres.
