the link works for me, on the  irst song, ur right i could hear u much better, i've never heard that song before, pretty cool tho, seems folk to me but what do i know....

i think this is more ur style for now anyway,  the story of the song carries u thru, the vocals don't have to be that strong....having said that i think u did a very good job on it...plenty of expression, maybe a tad too much in spots but it works....again it's hard to say having never heard the song....u did keep me interested as i listened to the whole 12 min of the song....lolll....normally i wouldn't have.....i think u did pick the right song for ur voice, again for what stage ur at in ur singing for now....later on u can tackle harder songs, yet this could be a hard song to sing i'm not sure....kinda sounds like piano man a tad....r the  edward fitzgerald  song....either way i think u did a very good job on it....why would i hate it u ask? oh u didn't ask? tuff ur getting it anyway....seeing as i thought before hearing this u were a 4, i would give this a 6 1/2.....see rating someone can tell a person a lot....wtg buddy ....off  to listen to the other 1 ...oops bet ur wanting to know how to make it better....i don't know i just sing....lolll....i would try to sing it smoother yet it does sound good the way u sang it....maybe let the words flow better....heck i don't know...

ok the next song, WOLD .....to be honest i don't know what to say, i really have never heard the song.....so no clue as to how it goes....unlike the first song i didn't really like this 1, and yes that affects the way i critique, lolll....i know the song called for different effects but i kept thinking ok just sing....baby steps....i just don't think u did the song well, and if u did then i just like the song....loll...sorry....what can you do to improve you ask.....i would say drop this song....JMO....hey ur up to a 6 1/2 just not on this 1 so don't push it....tc my friend

Billy,  Thank You.   Yes Harry Chapin was the guy who also did that song "Cat's in the Cradle".  Do you recall that song ?   He sang pretty INTENSE ballads. In fact REALLY intense,  In some ways he was like a more dramatic Gordon Lightfoot.. I'd love to try him.. Not that much of his stuff for selection.. and YES.. I did go OVERBOARD in areas... IOW,  If I'm to critique myself.. during that part..

"Well,  I've got something inside me, to drive a princess ..  There's a wild-man etc"

Rather than sounding as tho I'm sharing a part of my soul with the listener,  I sound psycho.. IMHO  LOL

Yep,  LONG song, SOMEHOW the delivery MUST keep the listener interested or the performer has failed miserably.. This is a "story", a ballad about a middle-aged taxi driver reflecting on his life and what he dreamed of but instead of any of that coming to reality,  it's ALL a fantasy, and he's just a stoned out cab-driver feeling like a loser. Whether this "Sue" Harry Chapin speaks of is a high-school fantasy, a girl he ALMOST "had" in his opinion in HS at one time, .. or a person who WAS ACTUALLY a lover YEARS ago... tough to know.. I think it's safe to say from Chapins perspective, he believe SHE succeeded in life, while he failed.

seeing as i thought before hearing this u were a 4, i would give this a 6 1/2.....

Oh stop,  I'm going to get a fat head !  Surely you are too generous !!!  Here's something funny tho... I'm happy with the job I did on this for me !  Really am.. Currently I COULD NOT do this better, I wouldn't know how to do the whole song better YET..  Probably would be around a 4 to 5 still but who knows.. whatever it is.. it's me !  :worship:  IF it's "so-so" I'll take it, and if I bombed, I'll redo it as a parody  :D  I did go psycho with expression during the above part when I relisten however. IMHO.. This can stand for improvement, but I'll need to hear how from others, and get used to it relistener myself too..

THanks BIlly !!!!!  This song is also probably among KJ's worst nightmares !

i just don;t think u did the song well, and if u did then i just like the song

(I assume you mean don't like this particular song ?..  Chapins stuff has to grow on the listener,  at very first,  some of his stuff is pretty bizarre. BUT,  he's intense)

Thank you Billy.  This was a REALLY tough song for me.  I wonder what you would think of Chapin's original version if you heard it for the first time.. It'd be interesting for me to know.  This guy had to grow on me.. He's a "bummer", but not unlike James Tayler,  this guy is one of the best "bummers" of all times IMHO !!!  Quite honestly,  I don't know if either of these would be classified as semi-hard, or somewhat easy selections... I think it's ALL in the presentation of course..

Thanks !!!!   I certainly feel taxi was the better of the two songs.. Do you think I should stick to Gordon Lightfoot... who did "If you can read my mind", wreck of the Edmund FItzgerald", James Taylor etc... more folky ballads for awhile ?  They are easier for me to convey expression.  Jimmy Buffet is REAL difficult for me !!!  I'm going to try "Come Monday" and "Son or a Son of a Sailor" again" but I BUTCHER those badly. Love the songs however !  Thing about Buffet, he does what he does in his register WELL to suit his stuff,  and I can't come near his timbre... You'd know how to work around some of these things... I don't yet.

I welcome scrutiny on all aspects of my learning to sing on any/all songs... Recording technique leaves much to be desired I suppose my singing is the only goal, not recording technique..

The following song is a slight episode of mental illness due to 12 hours singing today..  I figured it's a good nighcap before bed but I had to keep it down somewhat because it's 2 AM and the neighbors are all outside talking to the cops...

I've decided my comfort as a musician has already been established as accompaniment.  I just don't feel comfortable being "out front", so I'm not going to go in that direction, I don't like my singing voice, so I'll try to "pass" as harmony..  I'm going to work with what I know, and that's trying to blend-in behind singers (WHEN possible), and follow what already is, singing "well" isn't something all have the same fair advantage of being able to achieve, especially those like myself who are strictly "cover" instrumentalists, artists, past actors, where the goal is to mimic. I don't take the creative route in the arts, I piece comps together by ear musically only to sound like an "end result", not create something else innovative ... Remote harmony vocals perhaps I can have a shot at tho... and I'm going to try hard to do that decently... Here's another shot.. I just don't have what it takes to be a "front singer" (vocally or psychologically), it's a mindset too... and I'm fine with that.. The energy I'd need to expend in order to do music "solo" or "front" at this stage in life (even lead instrumentals), isn't where I'm happy..likely because it doesn't "work" well for me... Time singing will go into my niche (area of comfort) as an accompanist both singing, as it's been instrumentally the later half of life, and  in time remote backing vocals may be doable.... Anyway, still plugging away...   Can't hear myself as I sound, but still putzing around with this.. Those of you who can stand out as great front singers... Kudo's.. Quite an artistic skill that's VERY VERY tough for some of us to achieve..

So I'd like to know how comps work in terms of me being second or third vocalist..  Not "The singer", thanks.  Problem I have is listening to the results of what I'm trying to do.. I'm too dang critical to enjoy sounding lousy for a long long time to come.. So I'm going to work towards the "blending" area, I have no probs if I can in time pull that off singing-wise

I wanted to say that I feel the same way that Steven does when it comes to my own abilities.  I've never had the mindset it seems to take to pull off lead vocals or lead instrumental parts. I've played bass behind many good lead singers, but harmony vocals is what I do best when it comes to singing.  I can't seem to play a convincing, spontaneous and creative solo on bass, guitar or keyboards.  The mind just freezes when the opportunity arrises and the voice wants to freeze too when it comes to lead vocals. Harmony vocals are fine though.  There really does seem to be some kind of psychological barrier involved.
Well this was technically off topic so excuse my input here.

Steven, I thought this was one of your better lead vocals.  Your voice lended itself well to this particular David Bowie song.  You captured the feel of the song quite well. Great pitch and the right dynamics.

For what you want to do, Joyce is the person that can guide you. Most of her song mix have some form of harmony. Have a look at her sub in SS.

Thank you both..  Don,  so I too don't go OT,  I am going to bring up something I've been discussing the past hour regarding what we are experiencing... I grew up as an accompanist in the classic rock "School of the cover riff" decades... I was trained to clone and learn "riffs" already done... so I'm a wannabe that emulates... I suppose many backing musicians are... We accomodate, and don't create !  I'm not an innovator,  I want to sound exactly like those I like, and not go any dimension beyond...

Sorry,  end of OT chatter.. Don made me think clearly what's happening however... Let's carry this over to the music and musician thread...

Thanks for the tips all..

Holy Xit, I think I found my niche...Gender Bender Elevator music..  This is ONE take, and I'll brush it up !!  It works !  Even I can hear this works...Either that,or I've blown a gasket.. I even got my falsetto between the intro and song body

http://www.singsnap.com/snap/watchandli ... y/acab92ef

(apologise for the volume prob on this song on two speaker stereo systems.. on my 5 speaker living room system it comes thru differently, and is easy to hear, yet on my laptop there's a big volume prob...I'll redo this)
