Another possible suggestion... I'm not sure about the specifics, but you could converst your corded Mics into a cordless. A friend of mine took 2 Audio 2000/ADM175 Corded Mics (cost about $75-90 each) and converted them to Cordless. It cost him about $200 to convert them.

there used to be a wireless transmitter / reciever that had an xlr plug on the transmitter that snapped it on the bottom of whatever mic you wanted to make wireless. I looked around for one at one point but couldn't find anything anymore. I gave up and bought a wireless sm58

To my friend mckyj57, AUDIX does make wireless versions of some of their OM series they're just kinda cost prohibitive to the karaoke enthusist at close to a grand a piece. but why sennheiser quit making their FREEPORT handheld wireless I would like to know because in my opinion they were the best (budget) wireless made except for the antenna sticking out of the bottom. :read:

gotta say I am happy with mine, but its not sturdy...would hate to let anyone else use it

I have a Gemini UHF Dual Wireless mics and I love them. My friend has Shure wireless and people claim that my system sounds better then his. So, sometimes it's not worth paying more. I have had my Gemini for about 7 years and they were worth every penny.

I've learned my lesson buying cheap stuff. You get what you pay for. You can't go wrong with Shure or EV.

true, but not everyone has an extra $400 lying around to hand over to an intoxicated or inexperienced singer who may not treat the equipment with the care it deserves

I made a deal with my bar manager that they pay for my mics if a bar patron destroys them. I'm using wired sm58's because I hate it when a singer takes off and runs around the room.

really?  i doubt i could EVER get a bar manager to pay for my equipment regardless who broke it!  as for the taking off aroun the room, as long as they aren't irritating other patrons or deing careless with the equipment, we LOVE this!  at our shows the singers really like having the crowd "into" the music.

And never give a wireless mic to Kid Rock, A DJ friend of mine hosted his after party and he took off with his wireless sm58. He was last seen boarding his tour bus and the mic was never recovered.

not THAT'S funny!

I'm not talking like a cheapo garbage Ebay mic.  I would like a respectable brand... but something not necesarily "audiophile" quality.  We are talking biker bar karaoke here.  There are a few good singers, but nobody who is going to complain that the mics aren't good enough for them.  I also think that you can work with a lot of mics that other people may say are harsh or have overly shrill mids with tweaking of the mixer.   :oh yeah:

Thanks for the replies.

OK, not my first choice for a mic, but in a rowdy biker bar?  A  Pyle UHF mic.  Fairly clear, decent sound, long range, made of steel, and tough as nails. A lot of different models, but you can get an 8 channel mic for around 70.oo.  I do not advise using a dual unit. You can lose both mics at once like that. At this lw price, you can afford 2 singles.

I use an AKG wireless (don't have the model number handy, or memorized) and have not had any problems at all, paid about $100 on sale at a local music store.  A KJ partner of mine has an audio Technica and he gets feed back REALLY easily where as I don't get hardly any feed back at all.  He has used both UHF and VHF and we've decided that the UHF is best by far.  VHF often gets interferince.  So I suggest getting a UHF.  Have used Sure mics in the past with other jobs and loved the quality of sound that I got from them too.  As previously suggested, I would shop around and wait for a great deal.

Sorry, but I haven't been in touch with this guy in over a year. I know that he got some type of XLR piece and a receiver, and just rewired his corded mic. He told me that it cost hime about $200 to do this. That's all I remember.

I have been using the AKG UHF SR 40'S wireless mic's for the last few years and they have worked realy well. I think for the buck spent you can't go wrong. The new model uses one AA battery and last about 20 to 30 hrs. The mic gives a good warm sound much like the SM-58. Just my 2Ct. worth

Gemini Professional 64 Channel UHF PLL Dual Wireless System 249
http://www.goodtimekaraoke.net/display.asp?OrderNo=MCGM2064M

This easy to use wireless package comes complete with UF-1064 reciever, 64 band UHF synthesizer controlled frequencies, phase locked loop circuitry, super high sensitivity with extremely low noise transmission & reception, power & RF LEDs, squelch control, and this unit features up to 250 feet of effective range. Look no further when deciding what wireless system to use. Gemini’s UF 1064 is so versatile you can use it in any classroom to concert hall with the comfort and assurance established by 30 years of quality service.

Absolutely disagree. Another overpriced "karaoke mic". The kind that will pop with every sibilant.  I seriously doubt you can get a decent electret condenser for that price.

Go with something from a real microphone company like Shure, Sennheiser, AKG, or Audio-Technica. (No Audix wireless options I know of.) I own the WMS40 (still available) and the Sennheiser Freeport (no longer available in handheld). I paid $330 for both and they are far superior to the Gemini. Personally, I would recommend the Shure PGX with SM58 head -- that is the purchase I would make given another chance to spend my money. I would have only one mic, but it would be one I want to use every time out.

Gotta completely disagree with ya, Mick.  I actually use the Gemini as my personal mic. because it HIDES sibilants so well....  The customers get Shures.  Also, I would NEVER recommend a Senn for karaoke. It's crisp, clear - a beautiful mic - for a TOP NOTCH singer.  It is completely unforgiving, and if a singer is less then terrific, you will hear every single imperfection- the worst thing in the world for karaoke.
