Just wondering how many of you warm up your voice before singing. And if so, what is your favorite (and/or most effective) vocal exercises that you use? I myself favor arpeggios as well as long-tone scales to both warm up voice and loosen the throat. Anybody else have anything which they try?

   Well Hello Phoenix, It's always best to do some wrm up. Got 2 busy one night, and almost died when things started to strin. I come home, relax, have a dring to settle down, and start out slow, deep note,, working my way up my range. do this for about an hour, just running the listing. then it's about an hour to hour and 1/2 before I normally do my first song at the clubs. Hope this kinda answers your thoughts. TomTom

I always warm up. I bought a warmup routine from Mark Baxter at his voicelesson.com site. I use it constantly -- does a great job of warming up the voice completely in 15 minutes.

I wish I could find a means of integrating "Favorite" and "Warm-up exercizes" in the same sentence in *anything* or just ANY area I get involved with..  But I HAVE TO do warmups now, and there's nothing I find more tedious..

Growing up in the days of Hanon, Bach, two octave scales etc etc (at least for one hour per-day before starting the classical music (on instruments) which meant 1/2 hour morning, and 1/2 hour evening (had to practice music two hours a day while the normal children were out learning about the birds and the bees) a "right-of-passage" for me was to "flip-off" warmups and graduate into "just sit down and get right into the fun-stuff..." when I dropped classical.

Well,  it worked when I was a youngster for quite a few years (meaning no warmups). Now I sprain finger pivot point joints on string instruments while jumping right into vibrato, and bending, and get ridiculous swelling of joints banging on the piano, or exerting anything that hasn't been sufficiently loostened gradually...  the thought of warmups keeps me from wanting to sit down at an instrument.

I need to learn how to ENJOY something that I'm going to need to do from now on.
