I have the projector and portable screen put together.

The screen is 40" with the capability to go larger.

Let me know what you think.

Looks great -- will you make me one? 8-)

Seriously, though, sounds like you have a versatile setup for not too much money, considering the screen size. Nice design on the screen support -- I can see how it assembles.

If you have a projector and an old RPTV, you can make one yourself for less than $50.

The frame actually knocks down to straight pieces, and fits into a speaker stand bag.

This was the second generation, the first one's frame not being strong enough. It had a bigger screen, but a whole bunch of problems I didn't foresee. The rear projection TV screen really increases the brightness. I have to turn the brightness all the way down on the projector :-) It's interesting that most rear projection TV's are 1000 lumens or less. The projector is 2000/1600, and through the rear projection screen is is really bright. Probably 3-5 times brighter than on the front projection screen I was using. The image quality is fabulous, actually blew me away when I first tried it out. The pictures don't do it justice. I would have liked the screen to be a little biggger, but this is a nice compromise.

I now need to get the whole system set-up and get my other TV's sync with it.

Am starting a karaoke contest at a large venue on Friday, so I'll get to put it to use right away.

LOOKS GREAT!!!  I'm not sure how it could be done, maybe with a tall stand but the only change I would make (for my show's at least) would be to put the projector behind me and put the screen in front of me.  Just works out better for demention/orientation of space at the shows I work.

Great job though!!! The screen looks so professional too.  You might think about coming up with some type of fabric covering or something to hide the uglyness of the PVC... that's just my oppinion though (that PVC is ugly).  Maybe some velcro and some nice red crushed velvet or something.  Just a thought.

I think you posted it previously but I wasn't able to find it quickly, but how much did you spend on the projector?

Also, good luck with the contest.  You'll have to let us know how the crowd responds to ur new set up!

Thanks for the great comments.

The one thing about projector placement that is a problem is line of sight. If the projector is behind you, it has to be much higher so you won't be in the way. I looked at a bunch of different placements, and this was the only one that work to keep the projector from being out where people might bump into it. I run it with the short side of the table towards the wall, and the long way coming out from the wall. On a stage, it's easy to position it, but some of the smaller clubs I do just don't have the space.

I agree that the PVC pipe doesn't look that great, but it was cheap and works for quick set-up and tear down. I thought about painting it, but it will get scratched up and look ratty pretty quick traveling around.

I bought the projector new on Ebay for $400. I looked for a long time, and decided that a used projector was a waste of money, because the bulb life is so short, and that's most of the value of the projector. This one lists for $899, so I got a pretty good deal on it. Specs were critical too. It had to have a short throw lens and at least 1500 lumens. This one will project a clear image at 2.5 feet. Many don't start until 7 feet, which is too much for what I wanted to do. On the 40" screen the projector only needs to be 4 feet away, which is the length of my table.

This picture shows the projector position better and the viewing angle which is quite good. Also the singer's screen is in the shot.

I took the whole thing apart last night to get ready for my contest on friday. All of the parts except the screen fit in with my speaker stand bag, with my stands. The screen fits into a portfolio bag, and the projector has it's own bag. Not much extra stuff to cart along (although my set up time will be a little longer).

I'm pretty happy with the result. We'll see how the customers react.

My daughter and son in law saw it running last night and said it was awsome. Even my wife likes it, and she doesn't like most of what I do with karaoke

I put some better pictures up. The line across the screen is the camera flash:
