Do the majority of the virus' attack individual programs or mainly the Operating System files.
I've had excellent luck with the following program sidewinder.

Like if you would download a program from the net and don't have a hard disc copy of it.
Actually, if you have downloaded a program from the net, burn it to CD.. Duh..
The way Windows installs programs, prevents any backups except programs like ghost, and ghost backs up the entire disk, OS and all.
Then you can restore the backup, and all is well..
But wait, there's more..
If you backup a virus, you still have it..

Will the back up mode also back up your "Favorites" list? Is there a Favorites folder?

I don't want to ghost a virus. I'll settle for just the files. Will it backup my Favorites Folder? Not Ghost but just doing the regular back up.

Often any virus will be in your data folders too..
If you have a virus, format and install may be the only way..

Ghost...no self respecting Nerd would be without this tool. I have several licensed versions, but I find Ghost 2003 to be the one I prefer....simple and easy...
The proper way to use it is to start off with a new HDD..
Partition your HDD so you have 2 equal size partitions or 3 equal ones.ect.
install all of your software.
Only go to the sites that upgrade the patches to your software...
Save a Ghost a partition image to one of your other partitions= and make a back up and keep it on an external.....
You are now INvincible to hackers, viruses, ect.....
Just DOD wipe a boot sector virus and your good to go on a compromised HDD.
I have Ghosts of all 6 of my puters....
Takes about 10 min to completely restore a whole system....
The thing about a back up proggy is that it will not read a virus that is written in another language and the restore proggy will not delete them.
A Ghost Image is just like taking a photo of your HDD...it copies every 1 and 0 to it's exact location...so unless you have a boot sector virus, you will not ever have to worry.
I run in a User account, behind a hardware router, with Mcafee, and have a Ghost...
Worst case senerio takes 30 min to fix, since I keep a new HDD on hand....

Hi Morgan, happy new year to you too. I have been lurking around once in a while but haven't found a post that I wanted to participate in. I hope everyone is having a good new year.

Instead of Ghost I use Acronis True Image. It is a similar tool. A few years back I did a head to head installed comparison originally going with Ghost, but there was some feature I didn't like. Perhaps it was the requirement for Dot Net being installed and I didn't want to use it. Ghost is a good tool though.

Do the majority of the virus' attack individual programs or mainly the Operating System files. try installing avast and let it do its thing, if you have something lurkingit will find it its free and one of the best anti virus progs I have ever used
True, a good anti virus program but the only problems is that it slows the computer just like Norton does. I think AVG is a better option, it doesn't slow anything and it's also FREE!
