I wasn't aware that there's quite a bit of interactive Karaoke stuff going on on the internet until recently. Yet why would we old farts wish to go to a bar and clear out the place with our Harry Chapin and James Taylor selections when there are sites online where we old farts can get together and sing that stuff and all others need to do is walk away from their computer for 5 minutes ?
Point being, Is interactive online A/V and VERY affordable (even free) Karaoke libraries affecting the KJ's income even more than ever before

I'd personally rather go to a place than sit at home.

I feel you on this one, I used to sing at the Holiday Inn's Lone Star lounge and it was mostly 35 and up type crowd. Well due to bad management no one wants to do a show there anymore. Not only was it fun to be able to do a selection of 70's and early 80's, but a lot of those songs are much easier on the vocal chords. I'll sneak one in once in awhile, did Grass Roots midnight confessions a couple of weeks ago, but mostly try to do the late 80's and newer.
I guess since my younger brother runs the show I feel a responsibility to try and sing more modern songs to keep the crowd into it. I prefer to sing while out also, but man I miss singing those AM gold classics. Don't get me wrong, I love doing some of these newer songs, but a song like "Sober" or "Evenflow" sometimes leaves my voice a little worn out. Maybe I should just learn to sing correctly!

I don't see how the at home karaoke with a camera can compare.
For me the "fun" of karaoke is seeing the response in the people watching immediately.

But you to sing to an international audience when on line. At the local bar you sing mostly to drunks half of them you would not want to be seen around with. ![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif)

I'd much rather go out to a club/bar. Personally, I feed off the energy of a live audience. While there is the added benefit of an international audience singing at home into a webcam...well, same thing happens if I tape the karaoke bar night and put it on youtube.

I definitely prefer to go out and sing - I work in an office in my home all week, on a computer. I have a garage full of equipment and anytime I ask, Joe is happy to go and hook up a system if I really feel the need to sing and don't have a place to go (more of a problem in this area than anything). I crave one-on-one interaction with real live people after listening all day to a doctor mumbling in my ear through headphones (I do medical transcription as my 'real job').

I have to agree Karen. I like the interaction and social aspect of going out and singing to real live people that you can talk to. For me personally, singing to a live crowd is very gratifying. I also like having a couple of drinks with people I know who enjoy my singing and even with strangers. Think about it, the people you now call friends were once strangers.

There is a bond among karaoke singers that you can not get at home, by yourself.
I made a half court basketball shot in high school. It was fantasic.
Nobody saw it but me.
It sure would have been sweeter if the bleachers would have been full.
Nobody even knows it happened and i can't even verify it.
I am the only person in the entire world that saw that shot. It was fantastic.
You practice karaoke at home by yourself, to go out and impress everyone.
EGO makes you do it. ![handshake :handshake:](./images/smilies/emot-handshake.gif)

Hmmm, where to start..........Sidewinder I have seen a lot of your posts and ego when singing maybe a problem for you, but it isn't a problem for all of us. As I have written before, I started singing at maybe 4 or 5 years old with a portable steel needled record player. I have always loved to sing, not saying I am a great singer, but I do love to sing. I was around karaoke for maybe 4 or 5 years before I got the courage to sing, I have stage fright to the ninth degree. Although I am for the most part over my stage fright, it still manifests itself every now and then and I still get a bit nauseous once in a while.
I guess my point is, before I knew karaoke existed I could probably sing 3 or 4 hundred songs from memory or along with the radio simply because I just love music and singing. Yes I know everyone likes music, buts it's different for me and probably for more than a few people on this forum. At work when a song comes on the radio and no one knows who it is, guess who they ask..... yeah me. If karaoke became illegal in public tomorrow and you could only sing at home would I stop, heck no!
Does that mean that I don't enjoy the response or the compliments I sometimes get after a song, no, of course not, but I sing at work when I'm walking around by myself, or here at home, or whenever, it just makes me feel good. Don't make blanket statements for all of us that simply aren't true. I know you are smarter than that.
Do I have an ego, sure I do, but not when it comes to singing, been around too many incredible singers to have that problem when it comes to singing. You want to see ego, ask me about my basketball and volleyball skills back when I was playing competitively about 7 years ago. 6 foot 3 and a 39" vertical leap to boot. USVBA and then USAV, I played against some of the top players in the world ( in volleyball ). See there goes my ego! By the way, a half court shot isn't that hard, you just need to shoot more of them! You shoot 20 or 30 after practice like we did I guarantee you'll make more than just one! Then you can switch to behind your back, then to a hook shot, then to bouncing it off the floor, then to drop kicking one in! Serious!

I sang last night at my primary Karaoke place. It was chilly so we were inside in a smallish room up close and personal. I started singing around 9 or so and the response was over the top, off the hook and overwhelming. I wasn't the only one singing, but I was the one that the crowd wanted to hear. Not bragging, not boasting, just the truth. As the night wore on and some of the people filtered out I had more of a free reign and sang around half of the time. I have never received more compliments than I received last night. I know some of them were drunk, but I saw the people really getting into the music and having a terrific time.
Two other singers were there that night who perform professionally in the area. I find that other performers rarely compliment me or acknowledge my singing. I always complement someone else if they are good whether they are an amateur or a professional. In any case, singing in public is great. When I first started public Karaoke about a year and a half to two years ago I was shy and timid. I didn't have confidence. Now I'm full of confidence and I enjoy performing. It has given me more confidence outside of Karaoke too. People who enjoy singing but are shy should absolutely sing at home rather than not sing at all.
I try all the time to get people to come out and sing Karaoke. The ones that I have been able to convince to come have enjoyed themselves.
Karaoke is fun even for the terrible singers. For some reason a lot of the terrible singers have the most fun and most of them they don't even care that they are terrible(they keep coming up to sing), some of them know they are terrible, some are oblivious and just want to sing(yell). Seems like a lot of the terrible ones are drunk too, but not always.

People a few thousand miles away listen to me singing online. Not the same experience, but still it is something. :D

<<< EGO makes you do it. >>>>
Means everyone likes to feel good about any kind of accomplishment. So people sing karaoke to have the experience (fantasy) of being famous, on stage, name in lights, crowd going nuts... to feed your ego.
You may think of it as just having fun, but fundamentally it's your ego wanting to be fed.
Who doesn't like a pat on the back?
Who doesn't like to feel like they did something good?
It all comes down to ego. Everybody has one. I think i have 2 or 3. ![High 5 :hi5:](./images/smilies/emot-highfive.gif)

MUCH of this is contingent on demographics and age
[The fact I was with a band that opened for EW&F at SPAC in the 70's in front of well over 35K, (and have played with a big name or two -meaning such large-sized crowds were common while on the road) is "moot" to me in this particular case Ollie ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif) ]
Local Bars:
Within 20 mile proximity: on any given day perhaps two have Karaoke.
Average age: of bar patrons perhaps 23.
Music average patrons enjoy: VERY little I like (and vice-versa)
(In fact my ballad preference might "clear out the bar" these days, meaning both
of them might leave on any given weeknight). At the very least eye's would roll.
I do not drink.
When I go out, I am alone. The few bars that cater to older customers do not have
Karaoke. Weekdays they have no entertainment.
Again, much of this is geographic as well as age related, whether the person is single or married, Lives in a college area, or in a location that has bars comfortable and welcoming given various circumstances, shares music interests with others that share the same bar space, perhaps whether a person goes out with groups of friends, proximity/distance/ease of travel to bars that do have Karaoke, Whether police tail an individual just for being a sole vehicle on a road late nights during sunday-wednesday "because they can", etc..
In my area, given my preferences and age, distance that a person would need to travel to a bar that's welocoming to "all types" being a non-drinker, HOME is really the only comfortable option. When I was 30 things would've been different. Assuming I lived near a decent sized city things would also be different

A karaoke club. Preferably a small one where they don't know me, because I get a charge when people come out of the other room to see who is singing, or when they turn and watch me the entire time. I love the attention -- I am a natural-born ham.
I didn't like the SS type of thing because of the fluff. People would say "fantastic job" and the singer can't carry a tune. That kind of attention I don't need -- I know I am neither William Shatner nor Frank Sinatra. I want some more honest stuff.
I just put up some stuff on "SingSnap" which seems like a nice little setup. Same phenomenon there -- if people say you are awesome it means exactly nothing.

I'm on Singsnap too Mcky. It's where I've been trying to learn how to sing, (although on a good day I sound like a cross between Alfalfa of the little rascals, and Elmer Fudd), yet as a learning site, for me it's ideal. I love the library, and features, gives plenty of options as well in terms of privacy vs public display of work.. Assuming you haven't already, check out the community interactive A/V singing rooms, they operate 24/7. Best of all IMHO, the site can be a great "night-cap", where I just watch and listen.. I prefer the "point and shoot" convenience of the site too, since it's just a vehicle that can hopefully enable me to attain an eventual honest "5" rank. Remember, I have no KJ experience, I have no library, no karaoke player.. What more can I ask for now, (besides a voice) ?
If I had a bar around me where a few our age frequented, even sang the selection of our time and appreciated a little of the music of our age bracket, THAT would be great. These place are LOUD LOUD new screaming radio stuff... You don't hear Sinatra, JT, Chapin, Buffet, in fact I'm afraid assuming I sang that, *I'd* end up 86'd like the gentlemen in the who "didn't belong" due to his musical preferences. These place would be such an environment to "boo" ballads of the 60's and 70's. Sad, but true..
Last of the area bars that offered Karaoke and an environment conducive to "all" mingling despite age and preference shutdown in 2003.
