I don't care if the KJ can or cannot sing. I don't like it when a KJ who can sing well sing to much.
Good look is a bonus
I try to avoid places where they play to much DJ music.
I carry my own discs, so the house song selection is not important to me.

to me none of the above are a make or break deal by itself. A great soundman will be able to make crap gear sound "good" exelent gear will make an average or poor soundman seem really good. a bad sound guy with bad gear is going to push me out the door in a heartbeat. for that matter good gear run poorly will send me packin too. a smiley face on your EQ is going to sound like azz in almost every case!!  
   Ive seen a fat guy in dirty sweats full of holes run a karaoke show..I dont think anyone was impressed!
   To me song selection is not critical, if you have the right 100 songs you can have everything that anyone will sing for a night and some spares. the right 100 songs does change night to night tho. I like to see a show that buys at least some of the newest updates.
   I personaly HATE strict rotations. going from an upbeat song to a downbeat song and back again is BAD entertainment. It bores people and they leave. its a proven fact! A FAIR rotation is required, at the end of the night I expect to have sang as many songs as the next guy or gal, but I do not really want to follow the same singer all night.
   If the signs say karaoke , and the host plays mostly dj music when he has singers waiting it can get old quick! on the other hand if nobody is signing up I do not believe in trying to sing every song. who wants to listen to the host sing all night? this is why I keep a good variety of Dj music also.
  having a personality is important, the guy/ gal who just calls a name and stands there gets old too. in all truth this is something I personaly work really hard on as it is not always my strong point.

Ok, I see there is a wide choice so here go's...

1. The Charmer, win them over first
2. The Killer Look.. oh yea
3. The Voice.. at least for some this and # 1 will result in #2
4.The sound sys.
5. Rotation Keeper  always a good thing
6. The sound man (person) this person can help or hurt you
7. The book thickness for us newbys, ya can't sing what ya can't see
8. Karaoke Only but with a LITTLE filler mix
9. A DJ is ok, but I think I've been spoiled

These are not in any order.

Looks??? We all can not be Gods gift to women.
Good selection.  You can never make everyone happy.
Good sound..yes
Knowing how to use it..Yes
Every good KJ should know how to sing very well.
Should not sing more than once in a rotation.
Personality...You should have a good sense of humor and be approachable and friendly.
Karaoke is karaoke. Not DJ night
No favoritism in the rotation.

I had a guy come up and tell me about his first and last trip to see another KJ.

She played with the volume of the microphone the entire time an outsider would sing.  Telling them there was a problem with the microphone.  She would turn it up and down, making it cut out.  Played her favorites more than anyone.
Nothing a good slap in the face wouldn't cure.

She is doing nothing to help the bar owner build his business and make as much money as he could be making.  But if he is that stupid...he deserves her.  I bet he can never figure out why he never sees any new faces again..

11. The killer look: Someone you just need to be in bed with - *** WAY AT THE BOTTOM OF MY LIST FOR SURE....but they'd better smell clean and have good hygiene. That DOES count in my books.

9.  The voice: Sing like a pro.  *** PRETTY NEAR THE BOTTOM ... Of course we have to know HOW to sing, but pro caliber isn't a requirement. Just be able to carry a tune and maybe assist new or established singers when they ask for help.

3.  The charmer: Good personality and make everyone feel welcome.  *** Been to shows where the KJ hasn't made one attempt to make me feel welcome...hence, no personality to speak of. Definitely a requirement. Shouldn't be in PR if you have no talent or skills (or recognize the need to have it).

2.  The soundman: Get the best sound mix regardless of the system.  *** Definitely at the top of my list (tying with the actual system).  Sound reproduction, to me, is what makes the experience pleasant - not only for the singers but for the people who are just sitting and listening.  

12. The thickest songbook: With all the version of songs that you want.  *** These omnipresent 90,000 song pirates don't do anything for me. I end up taking my own music with me just to be sure I have what I want to sing because I sing obscure stuff.  Even the pirates don't have my stuff usually.  

1/2. The sound system: The best there is.  *** See above.

4. The rotation keeper: never misplaced the slips. *** If a host doesn't strive to maintain a fair rotation, they get one chance from me.  And I am very careful to tell anyone with ears that if they go to 'that place' the rotation will suck and don't bother going. On the other hand, mistakes do happen...And I always announce once or twice during the night that if someone has brought me and slip and they feel they've been skipped, to PLEASE COME UP AND LET ME KNOW. Don't go away mad. Mistakes do occur.. Can't be helped...  And if I see money change hands, and that person sings next or soon to next, I walk...that's what I have feet for.

11. The DJ : plays a full DJ music more than karaoke. *** If I go somewhere that advertises karaoke, I expect karaoke. After one full DJ song, I'll be out the door...and not return.  Tells me there is a lack of good singers or singers PERIOD.

2. The strictly karaoke only: Play the minimum filler music to just fill the dead air.  *** I like filler music - no matter how short it might be. (Sometimes it is a welcome reprieve for people who may not necessarily enjoy the kinds of songs being sung by the karaokers.)  Dead air is horrible. Always makes me think there is some sort of technical malfunction if you can hear every little conversation in the place because they're between singers.  And I really don't like someone doing 'dj talk' to fill that dead air. On the other hand, if there is a 'dancey' crowd, or a big group where most of the people don't sing, it's good to have some GREAT dance music at some point during the night. (I used to do "The booty call" and everyone would get up and dance - some sort of 'booty music' - called it 'the 7th inning stretch'  - gives everyone's butts a chance to come back to life!)

Others...I think the relationship a hosting company has with the hosting establishment shines through. I am always very comfortable in a place that promotes karaoke, takes care of the karaoke crowd, etc.  Too many places the KJ is working in a situation where the only reason they bring in karaoke is for the bottom line and they let people know it.

Yep, Know just what you're talking about..Had a KJ here in the area that when, I first started and didn't know me, kept ever so slightly moving the music volume up, but what she didn't know was that the song I was doing I could go even lower, and loader with my tones, as she went up.. after about a minute of this (and her glass staring to shake, Plus on hard look ) she gave me a little sh-t eating grin, and adjust the music to fit.  After that we've had a great repour. Not sure if it was the voice or the look, but it worked out in the end....Tom

That's my order. If I go to a place and the sound stinks or they don't have my version, I leave if they are karaoke only but if they play music I'll stay.

Which of the following quality do you rank as the most important:

No. 1 - The Charmer - Would you return to any show if the KJ was a JERK?
even if they had the best SOUND?

No. 2 - The soundman - The sound system used does not have to cost $10k  but it MUST sound decent in all venues on all days -- a KJ who can handle a board is a MUST

No. 3 - Sound system - again --does not have to be a $10k system but can't be a Walmart type or #2 just won't work

The rest is UP in the air -  I don't care what you look like  as long as you don't smell and have open sores on your face- You should have a decent library and books in good condition - Don't play too much filler but some is ok as we must keep everyone happy .  I dont care what you sing like  or even if you can sing ..but if you can't sing...do me a favor and DON'T ( I mean KJ's of course)
