ya, I had that happen to, where people asked me if they could sing a song that swore in it and if it was okay that they swore......I was like, go for it, it's on the screen...  LOL  LOL

I sing several songs that have the F-word in them and the only one I worry about is "Sober" by Tool. No one has ever complained, but I know some people don't like that certain line in the song. Mostly in songs it's a benign word used for emphasis, context is everything. I would and have changed the lyrics when children were present.

I am having a little trouble understanding that not allowing profanity "in a song" would help with problems in the bar. While talking on the mike I can understand. I'm not saying it doesn't help, I just need to mull that over a bit more. Of course you have to honor the bar owners request or find another venue.

By the way, after someone does country we try to play some rock or metal to lighten the mood back up, we don't want anyone committing suicide at the show.  :cowboy:  :banger:

Anyone else have Tenacious D's 'F**K HER GENTLY'? First 10 times it was funny when the guy sang it...told him we need to put it away for a few months.

Personally I think it's ridiculous but if Ten D isn't ridiculous, then who is????

Hey anyone (beside me) remember the movie "Grease", Listen to the words in the song "greased Lighting", wow this was in the movies and on tv, how could that happen?? I've been working on this one, and WILL do it at the club one night, But I think each singer etc: has to use a little common sense. and know when to do what songs.. As as KJ, you can only control so much, and for sure, the door they walked, swings both ways, BYE-BYE, see you next time....Tom

It's depends on the venue that you are playing, which you should be aware of if you are a descent KJ.  If it's a bar, after say 11pm.....that's just too bad.  Not the most ethical place around.  Swearing is pretty low key item at a place like this.  Karen, you brought up TD F*ck her gently, funny song.  I just had this conversation, by someone who likes karaoke and is very much into religion.  Him, his family were away to a vaction with their church group in Mexico and staying at a 5star, very classy, high end resort.  They all went down to the ballroom for karaoke night and early in the night, someone sang that song and the whole group was mortified and VERY offended.  In this situation, I agreed with them....a place like that is NO place for a song like that.....MrD

Considering I have never played at the "Headbangers First Baptist Bar & Grill" I don't see this problen a lot. When you go to an establishment that caters to the over 21 crowd, each of the patron should be allowed to judge what they wish to hear. Then Block out accordingly.......

I think the Kind of People that Complain about Explicit Lyrics are the Politically correct Jerks that took smoking out of the bars. Whats next Ban Liquor & Beer sales from the bars?????? More after Sunday School Kiddies......

When you go to a bar you expect people to be drinking, smoking and probably cursing. If any of these things offend you...hey...don't go. I am a non smoker but I don't get offended if the person sitting next to me is smoking, because I made the choice to be there knowing full well that there would be people smoking around me. If you get offended by people who don't have the same values, religious beliefs etc etc as yourself then go somewhere where they do, and that can apply to more than just karaoke IMO.

You make it sound like nobody plays anywhere but dives.

I play and have played places that are more upscale.  Places where people have some class and F bombing every other word is way out of the norm.

Let me get this right, just because a bar serves alcohol, the mentality and class of everyone should be dropped automatically?  Why would that be?

It sounds more like the mentality and class of the KJ on the job is automaically lower.  And you want to drag everyone down to your lower level.  

I expect more from myself and the people in the places i play.  Raise your standards.  It pays more.

All this is SOOOO related to the type of place...Here there are the crummiest local taverns where everybody knows everybody, F bomb is common, they think it's hilarious. At other places (where I prefer to host) there is common etiquette and courtesy at work. In those places I would absolutely NOT allow that kind of language. On the other hand, the 21-26 year old crowd gets a few rounds of shots in their bellies and let fly and if the place is full of that class of people, why would you expect anything else?

Where I come from: a big NO. It is illegal. No songs with the F word are allowed to be aired in public. In fact there are no songs with dirty lyrics ever sold around here.

I never allow people to drop the F-Bomb on the mic UNLESS it is a song lyric.  Unnecessary swearing is ugly and makes people sound brainless.  Personally, I can think of other words to use in the place of the colorful ones.  Now, the occational SH-- when you hit your finger with a hammer is OK.  

It's not helping our society to have the hip hop and rap music insulting and degrading everyone.

Those vulgar songs don't get radio play.  With the new digital jukeboxes hooked to the internet you can't control it.  In the old days the songs on the jukebox were what the bar owner wanted to be played.  But i know of several bars that do not have jukeboxes anymore for that reason.  They pipe in the music they want heard.  They determine the crowd musical selections.  They are controlling the type of crowd.  If you are trying to maintain a family atmosphere, a few younguns can come in and in 5 songs chase everyone out.  Because they think the next thing happening will be some kind of trouble.   They are usually right.

Uh, actually you can control the content of these internet jukeboxes, they have filters, it's just if the owners choose to use them. The filters aren't perfect but they can weed out of a large majority of a genre, be it metal, rap or whatever.

I think " Ode to my car " is a good example of a song that has a lot of F-bombs but is not the least bit vulgar. This whole thread is a good example of a purely subjective topic that there is no one answer to, just opinions. Some people including myself need to remember that.

I think this may be one of the only times I agree with SW, our club has banned any kind of profanity over the mics so much so we came to an agreement to pull those types of songs out of the books.  Reason being was we used to get the college aged crowd that would drink maybe a couple pitchers of beer between them, then usually end up starting some kind of scuffle - sometimes downright bar fights.  What were they singing?  The fbomb songs, they wouldn't even sing them, they would mumble through the song until the f word & proudly scream it out.  Well the bar got fed up with this, I argued the point, but if I wanted to keep the good pay, I had to comply, what I didn't expect was the fac tthat we lost the rowdy young crowd (yeah this part I expected), but what I didn't expect was gaining a GOOD singing crowd that spent much more!  I quit arguing after that & now promote it.  If anyone asks why I don't have a certian profain song I say it's bar rules & give them the name of a dive down the street that does.

We also have a digital jukebox & yes it can be filtered for the most part, the bar just has to request it to be done.
