i'm thinking of starting a mobile karaoke recording studio, plus for all the singers that record i could start a web site and put their songs on there so they could hear and talk to others that have recorded....any thoughts r idea's?
good idea bad idea? i found a web site where someone else is doing it, i'm sure there are plenty of others but can a person make money at it? and what prices would/could someone charge?  ty    Billy

There are several clubs around here the will record.  Sometimes they will charge up to $20 for a disc & the quality isn't even that good.  If you are going to charge make sure the quality sounds good or be willing to do retakes.

yes i think a couple of re-takes isn't too much, after that i may have to charge a small amount...$20 seems high to me, maybe 15 for the first 1 and 10 for the next ones....ty alot

Again.... One recording or re-creation is not illegal and doesnt require a license or fees. It is not distribution. This site explains the leagalities (Read this page from top to bottom and quit making assumptions or promulgating false legal advice) and professionally provides the complete services for making legal recordings.

I just started recording at our club & do it for free.  Audacity is a decent little program for this.  Once i'm done, I transfer it to a flash drive, bring them home & they have the option for me to burn to disc or to upload to my website for them to download which no one around here is doing yet.  So far everyone but 2 has opted to go to the website.  The ones that wanted a disc said their drive in the computer don't work.
I know of a couple that charge as well, have been told anywhere from $15-25 for a capacity disc - where they will record enough songs first then burn, or $5-10 for a disc per night which could only mean a couple songs depending on the rotation.  I figure I already have everything set up anyway & it really takes no more time during the show so or my time during the show other than pushing a R & S key to record & stop-why charge?  Only real time it takes is separating the tracks & uploading.

i'm not an expert but, i think it's playing to a person's vanity, i'm beginning to believe that most people think they can sing and love to hear themselves even if they can't truly sing....and would be willing to pay to hear themselves,  but what do i know? lol....

I record people for free - have a Tascam burner in my rack. The sound quality is simply amazing....and I have never charged anyone. I say once or twice during the evening, if they want to be recorded to please put an "R" in the corner of their request slip. It can get tricky if you have 5-6 singers who want to be recorded, but since I play bumper music, it is barely noticeable, the time it takes to cue up the burner, etc. At the end of the night, it takes 1:07 to finalize each disc.

Have to be careful - you should be careful about recording not-so-good singers. Reality lands at home when they realize they sound 'not so good.' Hard to get them to sing again. Just a caveat about recording.

I'll surprise someone occasionally and they just LOVE to get that CD at the end of the night.

K

I would think it would be even better to record them onto video. Then they can hear and see themselves. Hmmmmm . . .

The music is not yours to distribute in the first place.  Never was.   You have absolutely no legal right to make a recording of anybody.  Especially if you sell them.   That would require you to have a license from ASCAP/BMI.  That is distribution.    You own nothing...you have the right to play the disc in the privacy of your house.   That's it.

You do not have a legal right to play any song in public, unless ASCAP/BMI have issued a license to the place of employment.   I'm not even sure about a song in public domain.

I'm calling kameragirl on this one.   :O   You'll see...  LMAO

my husband will swear what I say is the truth, he says my temperament never changed at home...he continued to smoke in the house and I never once complained...at work was a different story...the woman who has attempted to make my life hell since I started discovered it was payback with interest. All my aggression and torment was channelled toward her and trust me if I had been left alone with a weapon and her she would have been badly injured. But I took her to lunch yesterday :) I even shouted :)

Now my husband is attempting to wean himself off. He is down to about 6 ciggys per day and I cant say that his temper isnt exactly sweet pmsl but he is trying to keep busy and the project he has chosen has been to paint the ceiling...cant complain cept its meant that I have been offline all day as all in the living room has been covered in dust sheets :)

LMAO Ascp/bmi have nothing to do with copyright laws  or licensing and cannot bust, enforce or even investigate or ask anybody whether their cd's are legal or not. They want you to think they can. . They are not a federal agency There is a fee that the venue should pay for public performance. My gripe is their tactics such as RIAA that try to intimidate with lawsuits, have no sense of fairness and want to get greedy. If you read that link they are concerned with public performance only.

Anybody with that power will have a web site that is .gov, not .com or anything else.

They most certainly do.  They sell the license for public performance.  If you do not have the license you ARE IN VIOLATION of the copyright laws.     You are using copyrighted material without permission.    Since you don't own the rights to the music you play.

Kameragirl, where are you...

3) Order your licenses through easySongLicensing.com

After you get your free search results, you decide when you will order your licenses.  You can order from our web site using the "Add to Cart" buttons on this page (below).

After we see your payment, we assemble all the information about your project into a clean, clear mechanical license request.  We send the request to the publisher along with a royalty payment.

Quote:
4) Receive formal confirmation in the mail and proceed with distribution
Once your licenses have cleared we send you formal confirmation in the mail.  As soon as you receive confirmation from us, you are cleared to begin distributing your album.

The total time it takes for you to receive formal confirmation after you get your search results is typically 5-7 business days.

Quote:
ABOUT ASCAP LICENSING

ASCAP licenses the right to perform songs and musical works created and owned by songwriters, composers, lyricists and music publishers who are ASCAP members and members of foreign performing rights organizations who are represented by ASCAP in the United States.

Performance rights have nothing to do with copyright laws or licenses to record and distribute. Music is copyrighted through the Library of Congress. More and more musicians  now copyright but dont want to be represented by ascap/bmi but disribute and sell with the internet.

You say if the bar hasnt paid ASCAP I"M violating a copyright law?  I or my singers are not responsible to ASCAP and have done nothing wrong. Neither has the bar violated a copyright law. The bar simply does not have the proper license for Public Performance.
