with this system each singer has a username and password so they can look up and enter their song at a terminal. The system will only allow one song to be entered per username until you have sung that song. It keeps a perfect rotation posting the list on a big screen near the stage.  As soon as you finish singing you can go back and enter your next song. It also seems to be able to play the songs without the KJ

The end of the KJ's job is in sight. I used to like computers, but they keep putting people out of work.

Anything where the completely take the human aspect out of the equation, will never fly long term.  Does the system also have a canned applause at the end of each song with a sound-a-like roddy voice say (insert name here), come on up!  They could remove the bartenders too and just have a vending machine where you make your drink selection.  The owner could save all of that payroll by just having a square room with a jukebox and a vending machine...rolling in the profits!

Uggggggggh.......The electric jukebox at home, maybe...in a entertainment/friendly environment........No Thanks!

As I said in the thread this quote was taken from, I would not go to a venue like this it's too impersonal. Also the interaction between KJ, crowd and singers is a huge part of what makes a show.

This type of system would lend itself better to Karaoke Lounges etc. Where a KJ is not required. Although there are some bars that I have been into that could use one of these systems and never miss the KJ as the KJ there has no people skills and dominates the rotation by singing multiple songs -vs- his regulars, and shows favoritism in the rotation,  in that case this type of system would be better. The human element is an important factor in the success of a karaoke show unless of course you are from another planet.

Nothing can replace a good kj as far as making someone sound good, adjusting their eq, adjusting the volume, adjusting their effects, etc....Promoting the applause at the end of a song.  I know this is something I would not frequent, why would I want to sing to the jukebox.

Well looks like I can still start something without trying.  The place I am talking about must pretty much agree they need a KJ they still have them.  My comment was made because I find the system so really well thought out.  They start the karaoke at noon on Sat. I was there a couple of times early when they didn't have much of a crowd. Thats when it was the KJ let it run auto a few minutes here and there.  The system belongs to the resturant/bar (yikes!) and one of their kjs told me he thought it was all custom programed for them. They have been running the same system at least 3 years. My usermane and password has stayed in the system that long. I don't travel very far so I am not sure if this is a custom set up or not but it is the only one like it I have seen. I actually like to go to this place. Everything is first class including the food.  They have a real stage, great lighting including spot lights on the singers. On Friday nights the have live bands. On Saturday nights they are packed with singers. Problem is its 120 miles away.

A KJ cannot be replace by automation.  A guy sitting around twiddling knobs or sorting slips can be, but that is not a KJ.  If you are an active part of your show you have nothing to worry about.

I call that a self-service karaoke system. There are a few system of that kind in the market and are commonly seen and used in karaoke establishment with private rooms. Very common in Asia.

I can't see it being able to compete with a good KJ. How the heck do you eq the vocal? Every singer have different voice and different mic holding style, only a KJ can deal with such variation in style. Even the song tracks are not made equal; some are loud and some are not. Some one need to balance the music/vox mix.

Jim,
Where is this place and what is the name?  I used to live in Nashville and go thru there several times a year.  Would like to check the place out!

It cold be automated somewhat wit a vocal limiter, but EQing, probably not.  Also the system is obviously computerized so it would not be hard to level out all the songs so they play at the same volume.

But then again, if the nite starts out slow (a few people), who is gonna adjust the system to play louder when the room gets packs with people?

Who are people gona ask if they can sing next becasue they are leaving soon?

Who is gonna remove a singer if they leave?

Who are the "divas" gonna complain to becasue they have only sang onece in the last hour in a 15+ person rotation?

There is stilll gonna have to be someone that keeps the show moving along.

In my area, it's sometimes hard to find karaoke shows...so that would be cool as a "last resort" from a customer stand point, but I'd much rather have the kj interaction (even if there are some places that feel like I'm dealing with a computer already)  :)

Sounds like a good idea for a slow bar, or the slow times for other bars.

The regular Jukebox has not removed the DJ from existance the same for a karaoke jukebox. Most bars that have big crowds go with paid entertainment when they have a big crowd. The jukebox is for off times.

Just another another attraction for a bar that may not always have the crowd for a full time kj.
