How come at amusement parks  you can purchase a VIP pass

At karaoke its called a BRIBE when you accept money to jump someone up a little??

For $20 you can VIP yourself all the way to the front !!!!!!

had a singer last weekend come up and give me the sob story he had to leave WAH WAH WAH - can he sing next?    I took a look at the rotation and moved him up next.   15 mins later he's BAAACK telling me "everyone" wants him to sing one more song.....    I laughed in his face and told him ..he was done for the night !!!
LATER >>>>>>>>

Don't know, I know at Disneyland they have 2 lines one for the general & the second for the VIP pass holder which can be purchased at the main ticket booth,  Six Flags up here had something similar as well.

Which I don't do either.

I always used the line (sing one bring one) method.  It brought people in earlier I thought, because the earlier you get there the more you sang.  The owners like it when the bar fills up early.

It shouldn't matter how you do it.  The early birds should still get to sing more, by virtue of being early, before the rotation line gets big.   Also adding that come early, stay late has the best shot at singing the most songs.   That's the only way to sing the maximum number of songs per night.

I agree with this, it don't matter how a rotation is run, you get there early, you sing more!

I really glad to hear that I'm not doing this wrong. Most of my singers are as new to this as I am, but sometimes I'll get a veteran who will complain because I insert new singers into the rotation. But I always let everyone on the board sing at least once first. And I try to be sensitive about insertions, leaving groups of singers intact and inserting only in the creases and cracks. And I never bring anyone "right up"... it's on four or five at the least. And once that slot is taken, that's it. They're locked in.

Some of the other KJs in  my area must not do it that way or I wouldn't be hearing about it. But now I've got an excuse..."well every KJ on this discussion board does it that way..." :D

The veterans are complaining because they want you to play favorites.  As long as you're consistent with your rotation and not letting some people sing 2 songs or more before another person gets up for their next song, you'll be fine.  Start playing favorites and you'll lose customers.  One place I've been to plays favorites all the time...if you're a regular, you're going to be up to sing at least twice as much as everyone else.  Those people think it's great.  The rest of us don't want to walk back in there.  My favortie KJ lines keeps each person's slips bunched together, then lines the bunches up so they're never out of order.  He watches for people putting their name in different ways, or in different groups.  And he "rations" the new-comers throughout the rotation, so they're not all clumped together.  I definitely think that's the best way to run a rotation.

That's what I try to do. The board is right in front of me, with slips lined up in rows and columns for everyone to see. All have one spot on the board, and they can stack their songs  in the order they want, or are free to change their selection at any time by just putting the new one on top.

Since this place doesn't take off until after 11, early birds can sing all they want. I hope they do! It's sometimes tough to get them up.

Insertions are the only, and limited, control I have over the rotation. And it's not by singer, but by selection. If I see Umbrella that's going to get inserted sooner than a stray cowboy wandering in and putting up Friends in Low Places, which still does happen sometimes. But once they see the vibe of the room they usually head over to the country bars.

I may not be an expert at kj'ing, but I know what keeps me personally going back to and steering clear of certain shows...and it seems like most people like the same basic things in a karaoke show.  From what you've said Bill, and what I've seen at the shows I've been at...it definitely sounds like you're doing it right!  Keep up the good work!  Most karaoke junkies are going to have their own favorite KJ style...even if it's not yours.  But, keep doing thing the way you're doing them, and their "favorite style" won't matter...they'll still have a great time at your show...as will everyone else that's simply there to have fun.  And that's really what it's about!   :D

Thank you for your thoughts Candi. I'm new and trying to learn, but I try to do the best I can.

Many of the regulars are as new to this as I am so we're all learning together. And I've made mistakes. I did favor a core group who started with me and pioneered this particular style of karaoke when the place really caught fire a  couple of months into this, but learned my lesson. This group is great... we all understand that the health of the room (which is what we all want) depends upon being fair.
