ml, this info would have been appreciated earlier.  A mall is different than a bar that has karaoke.  That being said the host was right to say what she did,  If the entertainment director did not want this lady to sing, then he or she should have the b@lls to tell the lady not to sing AND NOT put the host in the middle.

Isn't "Turn the volume down" ever a consideration in such cases ?  Certainly seems to be less hurtful than "Sorry, management won't allow me to let you sing".

If you could see my friend's show, you would not think that karaoke only thrives in bars. She always has no less than 200 to 300 people just for karaoke, every show. They are not there to drink alcohol, none is served.  The show does not take place in a resturant or bar within the mall. She does her shows right out in the open walkway in the mall. There are always people who love music and love to both entertain and or be be entertained.  My friend runs a very decent, family oriented show in a mall where she keeps a constant rotation (she says) and always seems to be busy without any filler music at all for the duration of her entire show.  I have never seen her show have any lulls or dead spots where she had to find something to take up time or space in her show.  She is paid 250.00 for each show and people constantly come back for more.  The only difficulty she has had, according to what she tells me, is this one particular lady singing.  You are correct in saying that the mall entertainment director should take care of it, but the idea was to help the director to understand that karaoke lives by a different set of rules.  In karaoke, as I understand it, anyone who wants to sing, should have the opportunity to sing, regardless of how bad or good they are.  Everyone should have their few minutes on stage, under the lights. That is why my friend endures the problem and tries to soothe out the situation with the people who come to the show.  She has many people who come just to sit and listen to the entertainment.  They are the ones who have been the tough ones to sell on the idea that karaoke means singing for everyone.  They want good singers and good entertainment.  Again, her job as a kj in this particular situation involves putting people in the seats as an audience for the show.  It would not matter to the mall if my friend was the only one to sing.  They only look at the seats being filled for entertainment purposes. I can see their point.  I can also see what all of you are saying about making sure the paying guests are happy and buying drinks.  It is just a different situation all together! I guess, for once, I should have just sat and read this thread, that way I would not have maybe drawn things off of course.  Sorry to all of you for that. I  really enjoy being a part of all this.  Again, I have to say I highly respect all of you who are kj's running your shows.  You have a tough time and you do really great jobs.  Mine is so much easier. I have a band, I do the singing and they play for me.  The crowd comes to see me and they are happy when I do my shows.  At least I hope they are ! lol They seem to support me well.  I just find your jobs as kj's facinating and the situations you deal with are unique to your line of work.  Good luck to all of you! May your mics never fail, your sound systems always work, your discs always spin straight and  the words always show up on the screen! lol I really appreciate all of you!--Mike

As far as bad singers go, I don't think they should be excluded.  Karaoke isn't American Idol - though some singers think it is.

Keep in mind you also have those mediocre or unsure singers that like the bad ones.  It gives them a little more courage.  Then there are others who can say "At least I'm not that bad"

Bad singers may also entice people to sing who have never done karaoke before.

Oh my gosh, how EVIL!!

:D

I still think, no matter how hard it is on the ears, EVERYone should be welcome to sing, and as often as they want. I've heard some that are horrid... and some that make you want to run out of the room before the *giggles* break loose...

But it really is for everyone, from the god awfullest (is that a word?) singer to the best of the bunch...

No matter who you are, or what you sound like... there are always going to be some people who don't like your singing anyhow. I say live and let live. (sing & let sing?... whatever)

.

I completely AGREE with you and couldn't have said it better MandiLynn!  :hi5:

...and your newly- invented word "awfullest" is now part of my karaoke vocabulary from now on...  :)

Didn't American Idol have William Hung?

"Dude, get over yourself."

"re-invention I couldn't agree more with your observation"

Just for the record, how do you know i'm not physically or mentaly challenged in some way??   And maybe that makes me a little more sympathetic to his plight because of it?   Or maybe i'm just one greatful SOB that appreciates everything i have?

Please stop.  I can't take all of your compassion for other less fortunate human beings.    Forgive me if i seemed a little too human for your liking.    Next time maybe i'll spit on him and release the brakes on his wheelchair and hand out rotten tomatos to the crowd to throw at him.    And when he's done singing, i'll pat him on the back and as loud as possible on the microphone i'll tell him how much he sucked.    I don't understand where my being affected by someone that is obviously handicapped to the max, is a topic for ridicule.    He suffers way more than any one person should have to endure.  I don't understand why that should make you mad at me for it?

This thread was about people that are not as talented as what everyone expects and the reactions of other people in the crowd.   Get over it.  People are all different.  We have different things wrong with each of us.  Nobody is perfect and nobody should be expected to be perfect.   Myself included.

There are no bad singers.    Just some with less talent than others.

Whether it's in a bar or mall or church basement.  Nobody should be publicly humiliated.    Would you want your kids or wife, husband, mother, father or yourself made a laughing stock publicly?   Bring them to my show and i'll arrange it, if you think it's so funny.   I'm highly disappointed with the negative reactions to this thread.   There are some obvious places where i'm glad i don't sing karaoke.

One should not be so quick to ridicule another for any reason.

Actually that would make a lot more sense in what you post, so this will be the new assumption!   LMAO

Another BD statement, you are starting to prove yourself!
So out of curiosity, do your singers sing on a stage or do you pass the mic around in the audience?

Give me a break you big drama queen.  You were simply using the story of this guy as an opportunity to publicly pat yourself on the back for being such an Awesome Human Being.  I guess it's a nice change of pace from most of your posts where you're simply limiting your self adulation to being an Awesome Karaoke Host.

Good question, I have no good answer.  I ignored him when he was posting as BigDog, I can ignore him again until he's inevitably booted off the board again, which I'm guessing will happen by the end of the month.

Good point, which makes me think. What does the person who is tone deaf hear when he listens to other singers. We may all sound off key to him, in that case he is graciously putting up with our bad singing.......just a thought

I believe people can stay at the bar as long as they aren't harming anyone or anything. It's their right to be there even if they don't drink or sing. There is no law that says you need to spend money at the bar to stay there. Period.

Well actually since it is usually privately owned (even the corporate bars) if you are not spending money in their place, it is considered loitering &/or tresspassing if they see fit & can ask you to leave.  It is nobody's right to be able to go in & sit down in a business & not spend anything, whether the bar will act on it or not is entirely up to them & is THEIR right to do so!

You are going to see it happen a whole lot more.   I saw a lot of people drinking ice water near the end of the night.   They drank early and wanted to sober up.   So technically they are loitering now too.    I also saw some that should not have driven home.   Walked out visably staggering and got into cars.   Glad they left before i did.

The owner of any establishement, bar or not should have the right to tell someone to leave for any number of things that would be considered bad for business.

If they spent money in the bar, they are not going to be considered loitering just because they want to try to sober up to go home.  Actually bars would prefer that they didn't drive home so intoxicated that they (the bar) would be held liable.  Most bars if you speny money all night will give coffee/water/soda to help sober up.  But yes they do have the right to refuse service to anyone adn ask them to leave - espeically if they aren't spending money.
