I don't think I'd want to use anything to view the Sun that wasn't designed specifically for that purpose. I like being able to see!
The sextant's purpose is to measure the angle between the Sun and the horizon and is designed to be able to view both simultaneously through the telescope. It has really good filters!
I have spent many enjoyable hours viewing the stars and moon through binoculars... it's really quite amazing what they will pick up that can't be seen by the naked eye.

Murray,
I'd love the chance to try out a pair of the higher powered binocular telescopes...The night sky is supposed to have an almost 3-D presence (which is something I've never experienced)
They are quite expensive however.

I never really thought of the 3D aspect of using binoculars... you got me wanting to go have a look and compare the difference with one eye closed opposed to both open! At least we have a much clearer view of the milky way here than in New York!

If it is not too cloudly here we should have a good view. Wait... That doesn't make any sense?????? does this happen at the same time for everyone? Do you think that this happend in New Zealand too?? Or where Jian is??

All Lunar Eclipses can be seen by over half the planet, but not the whole planet.
